Just thought I'd get some ideas on what toiletries bubs will need (and me too). And brand recommendations would go down well too!

For example:

Baby oil
Baby shampoo
Nappy cream
Nipple cream

What else?

where do you get nipple cream from?

I bought Lansinoh at chemist today - its a really good nipple cream and it doesn't need to be removed before feeds.

I find huggies baby lotion and body wash good, i like it better than Johnsons stuff, but thats just me.

Sudocrem butt cream is good and so is curash powder for little butts. The powder is good if you are using cloth naps.

These are what we have been using since Leah was born and have had no probs with them.

Good luck

Nipple cream - I swear by Purelan (similar to Lansinoh), it's brilliant, I went thru tubes of the stuff with the gremlins.

Baby toiletries - I wouldn't buy too much, you get lots of free samples and that will give you some idea of what works best for your bub. Maya could use and of the Johnsons products no worries, the gremlins on the other hand got shocking cradle cap from Huggies sensitive and any of the Johnsons stuff, the only stuff they could tolerate to start with was some horrendously expensive Bod for Bub stuff which we found purely by accident.

We've never used baby oil at all, still have the bottle I was given when I had the gremlins (well I did, they tipped half of it into their bath tonight lol!) and I never used baby shampoo, I just used the baby bath liquid to wash their hair.

Nappy cream - my fave is the Karicare ointment with the red lid, Starship put me onto it and it works wonders, and for nappy rash I use Bepanthen ointment, but you get heaps of free samples of that in Bounty bags etc.

I only used nappy cream on Rowan's skin. Everything else was way too harsh including the hypo allergenic stuff.

For the hospital for me I just took my standard toiletries - shampoo, conditioner, cleanser, moisturiser etc. I never thought about Nipple Cream, asked Mum to get me some and she got Weleda which I found really good.

For a time we used soap on Jack but have stopped using any products on him now. When he used to let me massage him I used the Palmers Baby Butter (not that easy to get, had to get the chemist to order it) as it is the only massage cream that doesn't have almond oil. We use a manuka based nappy cream all the time.

I found I didn't need nipple cream in the first few days, it was after about a week that I started getting sore.

Third Purelan. DH bought me a small tube from Birthcare on the morning we left and I definitely needed it then (that was on the Sat, Harry was born the previous Mon). It was great. And I used it lots and there's still loads left.

We also got a free sample thing of Mustela at Birthcare, so you may find that the hospital has stuff like that? I dunno about Wellington. They say you don't actually need to use anything at all on bubs skin, I have to admit though I did love that gorgeous smell after he'd had a bath. Now we just use aqueous cream to wash cos he's such a sensitive wee petal.

I just took the basics for myself and purelan.

For bubs though you need not buy very much at all. The bounty pack you get given has some samples of nappy creams and I haven't even used these up yet! They don't need shampoo and everything like that yet.

With that bounty pack thing - do you have to ask for it? or do they just give it to you.

they should just give it to you but most of them seem to be missing the black and white book at CWH if they dont have that you can get one free at the library when you join him up.

KA - the black and white book isn't part of the bounty pack, its seperate. Thats why people don't see it or leave it behind under the basinet thing. My MIL works at CWH and always makes sure she hands it to people otherwise they don't find it!

You might want to take some arnica as well to help with healing. You can get a liquid that you take a few drops of orally, don't think you would want to rub cream in

I got two bounty packs, one at chch womens and one at burwood

I hated nipple cream, but loved breast shells on tender nipples. They were miles better for me.

I haven't used baby shampoo yet, and my baby is 16 months old. I'm assuming you're thinking of baby oil for cradle cap. If so, there are better products out there. Baby oil is generally mineral based and can dry the skin. I have a friend who is a midwife and she says she can spot the baby oil babies straight away. I'd go to the health food store and get one that is not a mineral oil base, though I believe olive oil works just as well. Generally babies aren't born with cradle cap. It develops as they get a bit older.

I also agree with Purelan for nipple cream.
Bepanthan for nappy rash (or prevention of).
Weleda as a general product range - has a variety of every oil, cream and potion you could want.
