So I was advised to start giving Jack water in a sippy cup every day. He takes water fine from a teat, but he doesn't know how to work the sippy cup (avent tops 3+ month ones).
Are there tips/tricks to get him to learn? Or do I just keep offering it (but then he doesn't get water and he needs 50ml a day being on formula). I've often just resorted to changing to a teat. Before offering him water, I just diluted his bottles (I know, I know) just to get the water in. Like I said, he's fine with the taste, just the sippy top confuses him? Tips? |

I just kept offering Spencer until he got the idea. One thing you could try is to remove the non spill bit of the cup so that it flows out and then they might help him with it. Although be prepared for him to get very wet, Spencer just thought it was great to thrash the cup around and cover himself in water.
I would carry on doing what you are doing though so if he won't take the sippy cup offer him the teat so that he still gets some. -------------

Is that the rubber disc thingy? (Man I sound dumb!) That sounds like a good idea. Jack gets wet anyway cos he always has it upside down when the teats on so its free reign. A little bit of water never hurt anyone

Yep the little rubber thingy, it does pour out quite fast without it. Also have you got the handle thingys? might give him more control and encourage him as well. -------------

Mac is really only starting to get the idea that he has to suck on the sippy lid not just chew on it!
It has taken him a good 2-3 weeks to get the idea. Emz, I also wouldn't worry too much as constipation isn't a huge issue when they have been on formula so long and if it does become an issue before he gets the idea Watties does a apple with prune juice solids in a jar so just give him that! It works a treat! -------------

Tom only just got the hang of it but that was after I found the best sippy cup in the world. They are hard to find but I got them from the warehouse. They are a tommee tippee/nuby one. The sipper part is soft silicony like a teat so that if he chews on it water flows. that was all it took to get Tom to drink!
I found them at the warehouse and also a slightly simpler version at woolworths. Look out for the Nuby label as there are other tomee tippee ones. I think they are blue/green and pink/purple and they have nobbly handles! |

Why does he have to use a sippy cup? Why were you advised to use this rather than a bottle? Can't you wait a little longer? Jack was solely BF, and has only just got the hang of a sippy cup in the last few months. Before that we used a cup which was messy and we always had to hold it. ------------- Lindsey

I have tried 3 different sippy cups, and he doesnt seem to "drink" out of any of them really...he just plays with them!! I am currently trying the avent one, as our bottle handles would fit onto it. He seems to quite like it, its a bit more solid than the others, so he cant thrash it around as much. I guess its just trial and error and practice!

To be honest at 20 months Elle still doesn't use a tippy cup. She uses one of the ones with a straw as she couldn't seem to get the hang of tipping. I'm sure she could do it now but the straw cups work just fine for us. ------------- Mummy to Gabrielle and Ashley |

| I dont think you HAVE TO but it isnt a bad idea to get them used to drinking from something else. Then it can be "milk in bottle" everything else in sippy cup. |

| Yep that was the thing my nurse said nzpiper - milk in a bottle, everything else in a cup. Plus I read some plunket info and other info from my provider (Te Puawaitanga) that said from 4months, offer them water in a sippy cup, esp if on solids at meal times. Doesn't mean they're going to take it, but just so they get familiar with it I guess. |

I started both mine on sippy cups in the bath (same with normal cups) that way they don't make too much of a mess before they get the hang of it.
I'm cheap and use those clear $2 ones from the supermarket with the different coloured lids. Does the same job. |
