It isn't rude to ask to bring a plate. I have taken one to every baby shower I have been to.
You normally take a wee gift too and put them in a basket when you get there.
Maybe you could all put money together to get her a voucher for some beauty treatments. Some people from my work did that for me and it was so lovely. Once I had finished work I got a lovely pedicure and a facial.
Another idea since she is going to be doing it alone is making her some homemade vouchers for things that will help once the baby is born eg an hour of housework, a baby sitting session, meals dropped around etc.
There are lots of baby shower games if you do a google search. One is that you give everyone string and they have to cut it to the length they think the Mums tummy is. Closest person gets a prize.
There are some cool ideas in the Oh Baby magazine for baby showers.
Your friend will really appreciate what you are doing for her.

At my babyshower we did a game where you had to taste baby food (in jars without labels) and guess the flavours. It was great fun. Prize was given to the person with the most correct.
Another good game we played was everyone had to try and draw my baby using a felt and a paper plate. You had to put the plate on the top of your head, so was pretty tricky! I then had to choose the best one.

It's not rude to ask everyone to bring a plate, it's a relatively standard things for parties/dinners etc anyway.
At my baby shower they did guess the sex, weight and DOB. We also did the guess how big my belly but without the string and the fastest to fold a old style cloth nappy and put it on doll.
Love the idea about the homemade vouchers Katie1, I would have loved that!

I just recently went to one and they played this game I had never heard of before. Everyone had to put a clue on the wrapper of their present for her to guess what was inside. if she got it wrong she had to drink out of the potty. The potty was filled with fizzy pineaple juice and little flake bars (you can imagine what it looked like) It was sort of fun.
Other ones were guess the DOB, weight and sex (if not already known). Also to put down what you think they would name the baby.
Its definately not rude to ask people to bring a plate....in fact you could be more specific so you don't get 15 bowls of sausage rols. Ask some to bring drinks.

You could use a website like http://www.evite.com/ to send out the invitations, you can set it up with a wishlist of things to bring and people can choose their item and tick it off so that no one else brings it or if you are doing written invites just say "could you please bring..." and select an item for each person (especially good if you know things like Sue makes the best sausage rolls and Sarah can't cook so she can bring drinks).
Good luck and have fun.

At my baby shower all the guests wrote down on these cute little cards baby predictions like d.o.b weight length, hair or no hair etc then I kept them in my journel it was really cute looking back on them. I also had a nappy cake and as far as I know there are instructions on how to make them if u google it or u can buy them on trademe. Then there are the baby food games and stuff
It isnt rude to say bring a plate it works out well because you end up with lots of different yummy food!!
