I thought this was an interesting topic that got started in the TWW thread so thought I'd pop it out for everyone to join in.

What have you stopped eating, drinking or doing since TTC? What have you been told are the big no-no's and do you think it's helping or hindering you?

Tea was the first item on the list.
- Caffeine is supposed to be out
- Female Balance is out (has Sage in it)
- Raspberry Leaf is out (good for PMS and once preggas as it's a uterus toner but not recommended while ttc)

I've stopped eating unpasturised food like cheese - just in case
I'm trying to cut down on the junk food (chocolate not included) and eat more fruit and veg (the story of my life).

We are probably all taking Folic Acid, what about calcium?

Are placing limitations like absolutely no alcohol putting more stresses on you then drinking a glass a week would do?

Hehe I was just reading the tea stories in the TWW section. Good idea Tracey to do a new thread.

For me, I have:

- Started taking Elevit (approx a month ago now)
- Limited my coffee intake to a max of 2 cups per day
- Started back at the Gym. Only one day a week at the mo doing a Step class.
- Booked Dh and I in to get Hypnosis for quitting smoking
- Started drinking more milk/flavoured milk
- Eating more salads/green leaf salads and fruit

Im not a big drinker so the alcohol isnt a real issue for me. But I have had the odd glass since ttc. Personally I dont think it is an issue having a glass of wine every now and then.

I am taking elevit.

Dont really drink, might a have big one every now and then but not in the 2ww.

Cut back caffiene... no coffee, 2 cups of tea per day and 1 glass of coke zero with dinner.

Lots of water and lots of fruit and veg.

Planning on upping the exercise this time round.

I'm also taking Folic Acid and I started drinking green tea because I never have much EWCM. Tried EPO but it wreaked havoc so stopped that.

Other than that the only things I stop doing during the TWW is sleeping with the electric blanket on and using the steam room at the pool.

I'm taking Folic Acid too, and Vitex but that's more to straighten out my cycle
Never been a coffee drinker, and not a big alcohol drinker but if I feel like a drink (once every couple of months!) then I'll have one.

I've been taking Elevit and vitex and started drinking green tea to increase EWCM. I'm also cutting alcohol down to a couple of drinks in the tww but am still drinking too much in the other two weeks

I'm trying to get back into going to the gym a bit more as have been really lazy since our wedding in February.

I don't drink coffee, but do drink V's so need to cut them out too as I heard caffeine can decrease your chances of fertilty. I think it's meant to be in high doses, but I'm not sure of the effects of other stuff in energy drinks anyway.

I hadn't even thought of cutting out any foods at this point. I think I might just wait till I get pregnant for that.

When you're charting, if you have your electric blanket on it will affect your temps.

Posted By: TraceyA
Date Posted: 26 May 2008 at 8:34am
Not only that minik8e, the electric blanket, like a bath, raises your core body temperature. When your TTC you need to keep your body temp as close to normal (around 37 degrees), same as guys not using hot tubs and letting the boys hang cool and free. Hot baths, spas, sauna's, sun beds all those sorts of things are out.

is that just important during the TWW or all the time? charting isnt too much of an issue anymore as i have to have scans and bloods all the time anyway.

I haven't made any changes so far (apart from the obvious folic acid) but I am only a moderate coffee and alcohol drinker to start with and I eat reasonably healthily.

I think depriving myself of things now will only stress me out and make TTC harder than it already is - and let's face it, it is already hard enough!

Yep, folic acid, cut down the caffiene, excersise more so that my body is healthier, more water and fruit and veges and also red meat for iron.,

Like foxxy_one said, you shouldn't be having Raspberry Leaf tea till about 35/36 weeks pg, so its something to cut out right up until that point.

I didn't cut out anything except smoking, coke to an extent etc. I figure you've got 9 months (plus more if you BF) that you can't eat anything you want.

I don't drink or smoke to start, and apart from taking folic acid aren't doing anything different. Eating healthy and exercise are two things I'm always struggling to keep on top of.

Im trying really hard to lose weight before we TTC. So far Ive lost 15 but I would LOVE to lose another 10.

How I look at it is that Im just getting my body ready for when I am pregnant because I will obviously want to keep up the healthy eating with a baby inside me!

Other than that I wont give up anything - havent heard about Vitex what is it?

I plan t continue as normal until i get BFP then i change what has to be done. I eat i reasonably large and veired diet now anyway. As for taking supplements i'm no good at remembering to do things on a regular basis so if i have to take them i will once i get a bFp.

I'm still having a couple of drinks now and again but won't drink during 2ww.

I read on my Folic Acid info that you shouldn't drink when taking it. I think it reduces the effect so I was thinking about stopping drinking all together but though that might be a bit OTT.

Interested to hear what everyone else is doing.

Hi Jane *waves* (I recognise you from weddings.co.nz)

I am obstaining from drinking while in the TWW and am only having the occasional one at other times, I'm not a big drinker anyway so no biggie. The main thing I have trouble with is V, I love it!!! Generally just have one now and then. Am also taking Elevit. Other than that not a lot has changed so far.

Im reluctant to give up much at the moment. I have cut smoking right back to minimal.......like today i havent had one and yesterday i had two.

Ive been TTC for 12months(due to Depo) and i get quite emotional every month my AF arrives. So if i was to give up a heap of things and not try and continue on with normal life, i would become more and more obsessed with getting PG......and even more resentful if i dont get BFP cos i would have given up so much........

I will have to nip the Vs in the butt, but i do only have one a day, no different that one cup of coffee a day. I barely drink coke, and dont do coffee and if anything have a very weak cup of tea in the mornings.

As for drinking, well i cant be bothered drinking much these days but im not about to miss out on a social occassion on the off chance that i may or not be pregnant, i have to keep moving forward like normal........

I agree Chickielou, awesome that you have continued with the cutting down ciggies!! I think you can only cut down the things that are managable and you can keep them going in the long run. If it takes a while to get pregant then you are right, it is bad enough not to have got a BFP but if you feel you are missing out on something and get miserable what is the point.
Lot's of woman get pregnant not doing the right things, drinking heaps, drugs, smoking, stress. If there was a manual or something we could all do for getting pregant guaranteed, it would be easy & quick! I guess that why having babies is the most precious thing we can make.

* I quit smoking 4 months ago (after 15 years) through hypnosis.
* I've always been a healthy eater and exercise moderately.
* I've cut down my caffeine to one coffee and one tea a day (I used to have at least twice that).
* I'm taking Elevit, maca and vitex supplements.
* I'm limiting my soy milk to one (coffee) a day even though I know I should be removing it completely from my diet!
* I've cut down my alcohol consumption.

The alcohol has been the hardest for me as I've always been a huge binge drinker. My obstetrician has told me you should be having no more than 3 drinks in any one night if you're TTC.

I've cut out any drinking during weeknights and have managed to limit it to 3-4 drinks when socialising on weekends (trust me, that's pretty straight for me. It wasn't unusual for me to knock back 1 or 2 bottles of wine to myself when with friends).

I'm just taking Elevit which has 1.25mg of calcium.

Another thing I thought I'd add is that limiting the things you enjoy can cause a lot of stress, which isn't any good for TTC. To help me relax, I'm taking Impatiens flower remedy drops and I have some rose essential oil. Does anyone else have any tips or remedies?

I take a liquid calcium which is 875mg of calcium carbonate - which is equivalent to 350mg of calcium. But I don't drink milk so its really my only source of calcium and I take it to help with magnesium absorption

Just checked on the box and that's what it says. I'm not sure what the recommended calcium dose is, though. 1000mg sounds like plenty!

Oh and I've also given up trying to give stuff up. Although I have stopped drinking coffee except during the first few days of AF, but I was never a big coffee drinker anyway. But I also don't drink and have a reasonably healthy diet.

And if you don't like fish oil you can try flaxseed oil instead.

Hi

I thought i would add, that I was taking Concievewell by blackmores, but realised after almost a month of feeling like crud that they were making me feel that way..........feeling tired, nauseous etc.........thought i was preg, so when i wasnt they inadvertently made me upset also......

I exercise regularly, wouldnt mind getting my weight down a touch so its not so bad at the other end after I actually get BFP. But i been rather lazy lately.........Really want my fitness up a bit so i can try and keep it up when Preg.

I don't bother with any of the pre-natal or pregnancy multivitamins - I've heard lots of people feel sick on them. So I just stick with all the vitamins my dietician recommended and take extra folic acid.

Lou - I'm trying to lose weight too. I've put on over 10kg since I got married So I've decided that my focus now is going to be on getting fit and healthy and hopefully pg will follow. Although my SIL paid a surprise visit tonight so we ended up having BK for tea

Are prenatal/pregnancy vitamins (Elevit and Blackmores etc) just a women's multi-vitamin with a massive dose of folic acid?

I think some things are similar, but i also think there are things in womens multi vitamins that you cant take while preg and TTC. I also think in prenatal/preg vits theres a lot more than just the folic acid added. IE:Calcium, folic, omegas. I also think that some vitamins need to be avoided........i think vitaminB maybe........but dont quote me on that. I also read that too much Vit C while TTC can hinder fertility.
My friend cant take Elevit, and her husband bought a big pack for her too, so she has given me. I will start trying them now so i can work out if they make me feel ill cos when I BFP i wont know if its those or the morning Sickness making me feel crap. Will keep taking my folic acid to make sure i get the recommended doses, cos i have found alot of those prenatal preg vits dont have the full 0.8mgs as recommended and i talked to pharmacist and he said its ok to go over as it would take quite alot to have too much..........

I swear by the end of this i will have learned equivalent to a university degree!!!!

I'm pretty sure it's the Vitamin A in a regular women's multi vitamin you have to stay away from while pregnant. Same reason you can't have pate and liver, very high Vitamin A content

-------------

Posted By: Emily281
Date Posted: 23 January 2009 at 9:18am
Yeah its the Vitamin A. Vitamin B is water soluable so if you get too much you just pee it out. But too much vitamin A is bad for baby. Mine has Vitamin A in it, but I checked the levels and its under the recommended limit so I'm going to keep taking it until I get pg and then see what the midwife says 'cause its an awesome multivit and I feel so much better since taking it.
