Mona (DSD) wants to get a job at Countdown, and it got Willie and I reminiscing about our first jobs.

His was during the school holidays cleaning up at the forestry where his Dad worked for $1 an hour.

Mine was a local paper run at $3 a week. Then I worked at New World for $5.15 an hour.

What was yours?

I worked for my mothers company helping out in the office I think I got something like $8 an hour.  That was in the school holidays etc.

My first proper job was a nanny in Baltimore Maryland, I was 17, I looked after a 4, 5 and 3mth old I got $110 a week.  It was a great job, I got to travel around the East Coast of the States. Then I moved to Kansas City and did housesitting for 3 months.

When I got home I was nearly 19 and I worked at Quality Inn Rosepark in Parnell, I worked as a housemaid and also helped with  conferences. I got $12 an hour.

My first job started when I was 8, working for my dad cleaning his factory, sweeping it up for .50c! I did that once a week. .50c was heaps back then (1988), I could get a HUGE bag of lollies!!

Then I upgraded to a paperun once a week, but can't remember how much I got paid as my sister & I shared the run so split the earnings. It wasn't much though.

But what I would call my first PROPER job, was at Countdown, Bayfair! As a checkout chick when I was 15, working after school and on Saturdays. Got paid something like $6 something an hour.... I think.

When I was about 10 I worked for my dad in the holidays doing car inspections.. I'd help check the lights, indicators and turn the car over (wouldn't start) so dad could do the compression check and I got $1 per car and he did 7 cars per day so I got a good haul in a short period

When I was 13 I did a paper and leaflet run and earned about $20 per fortnight

At 15 I worked at Kids N Action (anyone remember them?) as a Party 'Consultant' LOL and got about $7 per hour

I used to do lots of babysitting when I was younger for friends of the family - loved it! Plus it was about $20 a night which was pretty good for just sitting down watchin TV!
I also worked once a week at our soccer clubrooms cooking the hot chips and running the food bar selling lollies etc.
My first 'proper' job was at Big Fresh/Woolworths, where I worked for under a year and moved to McDonalds where I got paid way more than I was getting at Big Fresh at the time!

I did lots of babysitting, for about $20 a night, used to think it was easy cash back then!

I used to clean the local diary when I was 14 and think I got about $1.50 an hour cash in hand. Used to hate it - the guy was a sleaze and it was a really grubby job!!

I worked at Foodtown back in the day when they only had one late night and were only open until 12 on Saturday morning....god I'm soooo old. I used to pack the bags at the check out ( they don't have separate people for that now!!!).
Then moved into the bakery. That was great fun I was there by myself in the afternoon from 4pm and all the butchers would come and pinch the biscuits.

When people went through drive through we had two buttons, one that we could talk to the customer making the order ,and one they couldnt hear us on while we told the other staff etc what they wanted.

One night i pressed the wrong button and the lady drove up to the window looking verrrrry unimpressed, dont blame her ,she had just heard me say "hurry up and order you stupid cow " ....yeah , didnt last much longer after that ...

Fast food places are skanky though, both pizza places were as bad as each other and the girls were catty as hell. Made a few really good friends though.

Oooh, another paper round girl here. I was 12 and got paid next to nothing. I delivered the Auckland Star (anyone remember it???) and my sister delivered the Herald. She also got the cushy job going into the Officers Mess on the Whenuapai Airforce Base and sitting selling Heralds to the officers coming in for breakfast.
I also did lots of babysitting - I was only 13 (eeek - wouldn't leave my kids with a 13 year old!! ). Then I worked in the local dairy. When I was 16 they went away for a week during the school hols and left me in charge - I thought I was sooo grown up, but now I realise it was cos they only had to pay me minimum wage while their adult workers were better paid.

I worked at Muffin Break for $5 an hour before tax. I was about 16-17, I think.

Awful early starts, no scheduled breaks and no rostered finish time! My start time was about 7am, and I could be working right up until 4pm. I told my boss I thought I was worth more than $5 per hour, and she said she'd consider giving me a payrise IF I got faster at putting the garnishes on top of the muffins. I never did get a payrise, and I think I quit shortly after that!

I worked at Wendys Supa Sundaes when I was 15. I LOVED it. Such a cool job. I can't remember my exact pay but after tax I got paid $19.27 or something for working 4 hours a week. Then I did 27 hours one week and got a pay of something like $120 and I was stoked!

My first job was at 7 years old working in my parents bookshop on a Saturday morning. Think I got $2 for the day and the rest ($10.00) was put in a special jar for holidays, special trips, buying gifts for peoples birthdays, christmas etc. Was always great fun at holiday times or Christmas as Mum would give you the money and you got to go shopping and had to work out what you were going to buy people for christmas etc or spend your money on when holiday .

Next main job was berry picking from the summer I was 10. Earn't about $10.00 on the first day and my big sister and i went and got our ears pierced with it.

Then from 12 had a phamplet delivery run and used this money to buy and keep a pony. Used to get up at 5am and do my phamplet run, see to my pony, go to school (or netball on the weekend), and then spend all of the rest of my free time with my pony.

Definitely taught my older sister and the value of money and budgeting and working for what you want. (Unfortunately my parents slipped up when it came to my younger sister who expects everything to be handed to her on a plate).

Edited as spelling is terrible today
