For everyone out there that works, do you (or partner/hubby) ever work overtime when it's not required and you don't get paid for it?

DH's hours are 8:30-5:30, with a 1 hr lunch break. He never takes his morning/avo breaks and never takes his full hour lunch break. Then he doesn't leave work til 5:45 or 6 usually, sometimes it's later, much later. Which doesn't sound like much but it adds up.

Sometimes he'll be away at a school like say in the hawkes bay and can't leave til late and gets home at 8pmish which he could actually put in a claim for overtime for.. or he can take it as time in lieu but he never does.

They don't get paid overtime in general because it's unnecessary. It's 9 times outta 10 nothing that can't wait until tomorrow and their company has a philosophy that if their business model requires overtime to do day to day business then that's a bad business model. They will however get paid overtime if its a huge urgent job and they have gone above and beyond (which is very rarely required)

It annoys me that DH leaves work late cronically as he gets nothing back for it and that just makes dinner etc later and later which is a pain as I'd like to get Daniel eating with us but he won't wait until DH finally gets home.

And then when he really does need to work overtime he never takes the time back which he is totally entitled to.

Then he burns himself out. Starts being a right grump. Finally takes annual leave and spends the time recovering rather than enjoying himself.

Does that sound like I'm being picky or is he being a bit silly?

DH thinks its fine but admits hes always tired.

we get paid for overtime. but, in our circumstances there is often something that comes in that just throws the whole day to pieces for everyone.

I really think that if he constantly does it without there being something urgent that you should at least make a rule to have say 2 family nights in the working week where he must be home by a certain time to ensure some quality family dinners etc.. and let the other nights go.. some times it can't be all or nothing, cos it just won't change, but 1 or 2 nights per week surely he can do....

Yup! I have had to stay back sometimes as late as two hours, which sucks when I am wanting to get back to DH and DD. Often though it is because I get stuck with a big whopping file or something pretty urgent that just can't wait, and I don't get paid for O/T.

He works with schools. Jobs don't just show up that late because schools aren't open!

I don't expect him to be home on time every day or anything. But he's tired, yet he works overtime for no reward at all and it eats into his Daniel time.

Dh is on salary in the army but they get (drum roll please)...

A whole $16 a day for being away from their families.
No overtime if they have to work say 18 hours a day because they're still in the same town as their family.
It sucks. Such a ripoff. We've had an extra $300 odd bucks from him being away for a whole month. Doesn't even cover the amount it costs me to ferry Jack around to babysitters while I'm working.

Used to but don't anymore, if it isn't urgent then it can wait.

But then the customers I deal with all work office hours as well, so theres nothing to be gained by working late.

DH is airforce and he doesn't get overtime but he does get a day in lieu when he had duty.

Your DH should take his breaks, he's entitled too them and he'll only run himself into the ground if he does, then he'll be without a job.

Our office takes time in lieu... we have a book to keep track of it all.

Maybe he should institute that seriously? I would!

Edited to clarify a bit.

I work through my lunch break most days and during busy periods often work a bit late. I don't get paid overtime but get a good salary so I'm not too phased. If I want to get away early for anything or have an extended lunch break I just take the time off. Having said that this company is quite appreciative. We're off to the Bay of Islands for the weekend c/- work as a token of their appreciation.

DH and I both work slightly longer hours than contracted. Neither of us take breaks really, tend to eat at our desks. Once a month we do take a long lunch on friday (1.5 hours or so). We rarily finish late though, as we go in early. We are home by 5.45pm every day.

If we have to leave early or come in late its not a problem cos both our bosses know we make up the hours.

Swings in round abouts.

No-one really pays o/t anymore, your agreement will state that you are required to work the hours needed to complete the job (I write Employment Agreements). Unless you are casual or part time....

it does suck though, he needs to have more work/life balance!!!!

DH's contract specifically states what his hours are and that any overtime MUST be (this part is in bold) agreed by both parties before it happens. My old work paid overtime, DH's will if its required. But he's just being a twit constantly doing overtime when hes missing out on his little Daniel time during the week and when it wears him out.

Well if its in hsi agreement, he has no excuse.

I dont think your being picky, one of the reasons we make the point of being home before 6 everyday is so that when our little finally arrives, we will already have this routine established an dit wont be a shock to either of our employers.

Good luck hun, the 2 nights a week comprimise is a good suggestion though.

Your DH is lucky he gets the O/T option at all, like I said it is rare these days.
