Well, I was at the doctors yesterday and she just asked that I was keeping away from certain foods and I said yes. And we discussed some things.
Then she said not to eat watermelon as listeria can grow on it! I thought this sounded silly. So today I bought a rockmelon.....and I'm too scared to eat the thing lol.
Whats your knowledge on melons (well she said watermelon, but they are in the same group) and listeria?
I was suprised to hear from midwife that listeria can grow on fruit in the fridge.
Midwife also said that there have only been a few cases reported over a few years.

I don't remember reading anything about melons of any kind on the foods to avoid lists!
I ate tons of honeydew and rockmelon when I was preggo with Benjy.

New one to me too! Pretty sure I ate melon during my pregnancy!

Got this off wikipedia though, does mention raw vegetables....

The Center for Science in the Public Interest has published a list of foods that have sometimes caused outbreaks of Listeria: hot dogs, deli meats, raw milk, cheeses (particularly soft-ripened cheeses like feta, Brie, Camembert, blue-veined, or Mexican-style “queso blanco”), raw and cooked poultry, raw meats, ice cream, raw vegetables, raw and smoked fish and the green lip mussel.

Raw milk is unpasturised.

New to me too, I ate plenty of melon and fresh fruit when I was pregnant, as I was in my first and second trimester during summer when it is all about mandarins, watermelon, strawberries...

Wow, soon we're not going to be allowed anything except air and water when pregnant.

I ate heaps of melon and other fresh fruit and veges. I always made sure I washed everything first though.

There's a list put out buy the NZ Food Safety Authority of safe foods. Here's the link: http://www.nzfsa.govt.nz/consumers/low-immunity-child-pregnancy/pregnancy-food-safety/ - NZFSA food in pregnancy

The list is at the bottom of the page of info.

Apparently you're supposed to avoid pre-packed lettuce as well. Woops. I found that out after my neighbour popped in as I was finishing a home-made burger last night, stuffed with ... you guess it!

Just about everything these days seesm to have a listeria risk, like mrsmojo said soon pregnant women wont be allowed anything but water and air and will have to live in a bug free bubble

The things I avoided were(which I feel are the worst for listeria)

Cold meats
Deep fried chicken(like from KFC etc)
sushi(cos of the rice)
Bakery sandwhiches/rolls etc(dunno how it was prepared)

With fruit I hate what I wanted, I even made up my own fruit salad in summer with ALL fruit and chopped it up into a bowl and sealed it, and just grabbed some when I wanted it.
I had subway, just asked them to heat the meat up really well, I trust their salads, and they make the roll in front of you.

I think you can be TOO paranoid about food, but if you avoid the obvious things like cold meat etc, you will be fine

Goodness. What the hell can you eat when you are pregnant?

I refuse to read anything when I decide to have another kid. Ignorance gets me a terribly long way.

Oh dear, I ate whole watermelons when I was pregnant with Conor, it was the one thing that I loved to eat. Both of us are fine.

Yes and no. A good ol' iceberg will cost you a fraction of the price! Maybe I can save up over the next few weekly grocery shops the money I save from buying lettuce and splash out on a block of cheese?

Hmmm......I would say if the Melon was one of those half cut ones that sit around all day in Supermarkets and Vege shops....then I may not eat it as never know what bug has grown or jumped on it in the packing process....

BUT if a full one..ie you cutting it up from whole...really cant see it being a problem!

Wait til third time around....you generally I think become a little MORE lax!

Yes it was a whole rockmelon - don't buy halves lol

And Kelpa - this is actually my 4th baby! I was more laxed with the first 3 as listeria was not educated about when I had them! They are 15, 14 and 8! When preg with #3 there were whispers of listeria, but I definately didn't avoid certain foods.

Ignorance is bliss (sometimes) lol
