Hi everyone
My little man has croup, he sounds like a seal and isnt a happy camper, the doctor said its viral so basically it just has to run his course, does anyone have any tips that might help him? Some websites say to put him in a steamy room so have done that with the shower and have vicks just to help him breathe as he has a little bit of a runny nose as well Thanks in advance :) ------------- http://lilypie.com">

| It's funny Daniel sounds like that too. Raising his cot helps a little. We have an oil burner with eucalyptus oil going. |

My 4 year old has this as well. Doesn't help but Andrew can take dry cough cough mixture which has helped a lot. Steam also helps as does the vicks. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

Our Doc told us to aviod the steam for Ella - and said instead, taking baby out wrapped up warmly in the cool night air helps! I thought it sounded crazy, but he did say that parents often find it's getting worse and worse so they'll bundle baby into the car to go to the hospital (typically at night), and by the time they get there baby is much better after breathing in the cool air - who would have thought? I found a few health websites that suggested the same. ------------- Andie |

| Definatly elevation helps. I have been hospitalised for it twice in recent years, and its nasty. (yes adults can get it but its rare). Hope he is better soon. |

Rico used to get this as a baby as well. The first night I woke to him at 4am sounding like he was struggling to breathe and we rushed him to A&E. The nurses/Dr's obviously knew straight away what he had, and were quite calm about it, but we didn't know what the hell was wrong and I was wondering why they didn't seem concerned. Once the nurse saw us and we were waiting to see the Dr, she sent us outside (wrapped baby up warm first) and told us the cold air would help. They also gave Rico some oral steriods to help open up the airways.
I think what everyone else has suggested is pretty much all you can do unfortuntely. I know the barking cough sounds terrible, and hard to listen too. It should pass within a few days (the worst of it). I found Rico would wake around 4am sounding really bad, and quite upset, for the days that he had it. ditto on what the others said.... colder air seemed to help. and just keeping them as calm as possible... tiring for you, but sitting up with him and rocking him sitting upright on your knee. Maybe with a movie or show on that he likes... and let him fall asleep on you upright as that will help settle him. I found my boys would get upset and that made it worse.. so keeping them calm helped.. huge hugs, it's really scary eh!

I've just realised Simone, that Thomas is the same age Rico was, when he first got it, and it was at the end of May, almost exact same age, and time of year!

Hi we have it as well, all the sugguestions work, we tried them all. The vicks on the soles of the feet good, especially at night. It lasted for 5 days, doctor said 5 - 7 days. Good luck, its horrible when they get upset with it. Hope it improves soon

he was a bit better last night, he woke at 9 and so I took him to bed with me, we just played and I calmed him down, gave him pamol annd lathered him up with vicks on the feet chest and back then somehow we both fell asleep, i woke up about 11 and put him in his own bed which he was happy enough to do and then he slept through till 8 so things are definitely on the improve :)
the worst thing is that when he wakes up my baby who hardly ever cries is screaming hysterically and its such a heart wrenching im sore scream its horrible! cant wait for it to be over! plus being house bound since sunday is starting to make me crazy! Does anyone know if croup is contagious? i am guessing its passed on through coughing, i need to go down the shops today and would hate to pass it on to someone else thats such a coincedence Italiah! maybe its a bad time of year for it change of seasons etc , i have been just talking to a friend on the phone and her boy seems to have all the same symptoms so might have it as well ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I got told that it isn't contagious as its a viral infection (we'd been at coffee group that morning so was a bit concerned)

I've been told it's rather contagious. ...our whole family were crook with it at once. But like Kellz said, it's pretty blinkin rare for adults to get it, but you probably want to duck out of coffee groups and the like until he's all better, because other babies can easily pick it up. ------------- Andie |
