My partner is keen for me to investigate looking after some other children at home so I was wondering if anyone on here does that or uses home based care for their children?If so how do you find it? Was it hard to find children? Do you have to do your own taxes etc like a small business would, paying provisional tax and all that kind of thing?

What about going through a place like Porse, they would be your employer and do all the tax stuff for you. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

i got the impression from their website that you still have to do your own if your a home educator they do it if your a nanny. Will call them tomorrow for more information, not completely sold on the idea yet, I really enjoy my job and not sure I want to give it up ------------- http://lilypie.com">

We use home based care for Ella and it works really well for us. She has a really good relationship with her educarer and I would definitely recommend it. Our educarer has her 3 year old son at home and a 7 year old daughter after school. Ella fits in really well with their routine and loves going and doing the school run etc.We go through Jemmas and haven't had any problems. They also have a playgroup one morning a week, which Ella goes to and is a really good way of meeting other home based kids, as well as educarers catching up. Our carer has been doing some research into other companies and one of the things she found was that a lot of other places require the educarers to provide toys for the kids (or for the parents to bring them from home), but Jemmas have a toy library that educarers can use. Sounds like a small thing, but it is really useful and makes like a lot easier. feel free to PM if you have any other questions ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |

My nanny is thru Homegrown Kids, they are pretty good, their admin drives me mental but that's coz I am a major flake when it comes to paperwork and always send my nanny's timesheets in late.
We have a home educator visit once a month and they also run a playgroup but our nanny doesn't take the gremlins coz I take them to Mainly Music and multiple birth club playgroup so they are pretty busy gremlins. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

Talks to Renata (my nanny) about what the gremlins have been up to development wise, checks out the scrapbook that Renata has to keep for each of them with pics and learning stories or what they've been doing, talks to her about ways of extending their development and what stages etc. to expect next. They also run a toy library service, I put a veto on that coz my kids have far too many toys so now she leaves them a DVD each month, last month was a Baby Genius one, this month is a Love to Sing one. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

I'm pretty sure you don't have to be qualified to do it..i could be wrong....though some places might be funny about it most provide training..which is good as Mum's often make the best educators..when i go back to work I will be sending Ethan to home based care but have no idea where to start..wish someone on here was doing care in chch:) ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

I am/was (having a break at the moment) an educarer for Jemmas. With jemmas you can do your own tax but they also have an accountant that you can use to do your tax for you for a small fee. They suggest putting away $10 for every $100 you earn. Your hourly rate depends on how much previous experince you have (ie i was slightly higher as I have a nanny diploma to my name) I used to do heaps with my carekids we would go to mainly music on wednesday, storytime at the library on a thursday and then some outing on the friday (ie to matakana country park where they can play at the playground and feed the animals) we also went to playgroup once a fortnight (monthly is the minimum) We had to do a diary for the children just detailing what they have been up to with photos etc and how it relates back to Te whariki Early Childhood Circulum. Each term we have a theme that we have several outcomes and once again relates back to te whariki for example we did the enviroment around us last term where we taught them about recycling and even had a trip to the rubbish dump!! which was a huge hit. Its great to be able to meet up with other educarers and also bounce any problems off others esp behavioural ones. Our area co-ordinator comes round once a month to see how things are going to check your dairies and provide assistance if necessary. The diaries also have to go home for the parents to sight and comment on. All play equipment is also provided by jemmas and the co-ordinator changes everything round (ie new books, puzzles art supplies etc) when she comes. Tristen fitted in real well with the kids and i think he actually misses them from time to time. My good friend is also an educarer so we did heaps of stuff together. We have been using home based care through Porse and I would highly recommend it to, as far as I was aware our carer had her taxes sorted for her, but it would probably pay to double check.
We were so fortunate that the lady DD goes to is literally two minutes down the road from us, and has two girls of her own who are 9mo and 3yo so DD fits in right in the middle. She loves going there and often doesn't want to leave! They often go to Playcentre, but do a lot of different activities at our carer's home like painting and baking etc, and go out to different places every so often as well. As I only work part time it turned out to be the most cost effective option for us too. ------------- Mama to two earth walkers & two angels. foxxyone i am a qualified ece teacher, although you dont have to be as you say there are courses you can do
Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences it all sounds good to me, even better that they help you out toy wise i have way too many toys for under 1s but thats about it! i have heaps of teaching resources though I could use, books, magnetic stories etc ill let you know how i get on when i get around to ringing them up! I looked after my grandaughter Caitlyn as a family educator through Porse.
I look after two boys privately at home on a Tuesday and Thursday and am starting through Porse as a Nanny looking after a five month old three mornings a week. |

milo- not better necessarily.... it depends on the teachers and the daycares etc.. some kids really thrive on preschool.. :) but i just think my boy would do better at home based care and i would rather he did more.. home based type things..like going to parks etc..which sadly arent possible at daycare(stupid bureaucratic stuff:( ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |
