Has anyone had experience/info about being able to tell the gender before the 20 week scan?

I've read some stuff that says you can tell at 12/13/14 weeks but this morning they said no way. But then I have one friend who was told both times at 12weeks it was a girl and both times it has been right...

Does anyone else have any info? I'm just curious, I personally thought it was 20 weeks was the earliest until I read this other info.

Thanks all!

The external genitals aren't clearly visible on u/s until 16 weeks, and even then whether or not the sonographer can see them depends on which way baby is lying at the time.

I mentioned at my twelve week scan that I wanted to know the sex at my next scan and the guy said "do you want to know" and so I asked if he could tell and he said not yet but sounded kind of unsure about that, so maybe they can tell earlier than they are letting on!

i have also heard that it is possible earlier, but in saying that the accuracy might not be that high. their genitals are/have formed at the 13 week mark, but considering baby is around 7cm length its penis (if a boy) would be pretty tiny!!!!, but i have also been told that looking at a girls "area" it resembles a hamburger! lol. at our 13 week scan i couldnt see it, but hubby reckons he saw more hamburger than anything else, only a few weeks till the 20 week scan so we'll see if that theory is right.
the guy that did the scan wouldnt even look though, mind you he doesnt really like to tell gender.....

mum2emj - I was speaking to my doc this morning during my check up and she said pretty much the same thing...you can sometimes get an indication but it can be wrong...she said sometimes 14 - 16 weeks you sometimes tell which lines up with what "up the duff" says.

To be honest I think with my friend it may have been more fluke than anything else if they got it right at 12 weeks.

i'd read that you could sometimes find out on a 12 week ultrasound but when we went for ours the guy doing it laughed and told me that at that early stage the say they're all boys. i mentioned it to him because i saw what i thought was a penis, lol, must have been the cord!
