I just watched the documentary from last night which was a follow up to the original doco called Painted Babies, but is 12 years later where the girls are 17. For anyone who hasn't seen either, the original was following 2 little girls and their families in the US who were participating in those kiddy pageants where the 5 year olds are done up to look like 20 somethings etc..

Did anyone watch this, or both? I couldn't help but feel a little sad for the girl who is still doing them..especially when she sings, she is totally tone deaf! haha She obviously loves it though and is old enough to decide if she wants to do it.

I know it's a big thing over there and some women thinks it's cute to see their kids dressed up etc. I personally find it all a bit creepy and strange seeing 5 year olds and under covered in makeup etc..

Not to bag anyones opinions, but does anyone here like the looks of these competitions? And if they were in NZ, would you want your daughter being part of them?

I would never want Sam to compete in anything like that!
I especially did not think it was 'cute' to see them when they were 5 prancing around doing pelvic movements and sexy dancing and singing totally inappropriate lyrics!!!

That Asia girl was completely tone deaf and you would think someone would have suggested switching talents in the 12 years she had been doing it!
It was nice that she seemed to enjoy doing them still though and at 17 at least it is her choice, and not just her mother & Grandmother trying to live vicariously through her

i thought it was sad to see her still doing it!   but of course, it's her decision......she needs to find a new talent though, singing is definately NOT her thing!
i was actually surprised at her figure too...don't get me wrong, she looked good, but she was curvier than i thought she'd be considering she'd been in the business for so long

i definately wouldn't want charli all dollied up like that and dancing so provocatively!!   it's a wonder they were both so level headed and not screwed up drama queens after that upbringing

No child of mine would ever be doing that. I personally found it creepy and weird and remember watching the first one and feeling the same!

So agree about her not being able to sing..thought maybe it was be being a cow..guess not.

Both little girls were really just doing it for their mothers.

Yeah sad she was still doing it and part of me (the part that thinks they are a phycologist) thinks she was still doing it because of her absent father.... trying to impress and win to prove shes worth something???!!! and its unfortunate that she can't sing!

I also had to laugh as the mothers were the worst. The girl who doesn't do it any more her mum was the worst - and when they interveiwed the lil girl

' do you enjoy doing this'

'Yes' full stop with a very glum looking face

Don't realy think the kid did!

It is creepy, it is soooo fake looking as well with all that make up and blonde hair and poofy dresses and big jewellery, nothing attractive or cute about it at all.

Got to agree with the 4 year olds and the provocative moves, totally inappropriate.

Sort of OT Did anyone see the (EXCELLENT) movie Little Miss Sunshine???? Totally reccomend it. They have a wee girl in one of these pagents and she is totally a normal kid, etc, very funny, really ruffles the stage mums feathers...

Oh yeah, Little Miss Sunshine was a brilliant movie, wasn't it?  I adored little Olive.

But those pagents - creepy, creepy, & sick.  If they were in NZ, ain't no way my daughter would go near one.  I feel sorry for those kids.  Ooh but what about the girl from the original doco who wasn't doing them anymore?  I thought she'd turned out pretty well considering.

I didn't watch it, but no way would my kids be allowed to be involved in anything like that full stop. Maya already fancies herself as Beyonce and I spend half my life trying to keep her out of my makeup drawer, imagine if I enabled that behaviour, or encouraged it even

She did a ballet production a couple of years ago at age 3 where they had to have full stage make up and even tho the show itself was totally age appropriate, seeing her all dolled up like that made me distinctly uncomfortable.

I watched it, it creeps me out seeing little babies looking like little ladies even seeing her doing it when she was 17 still kind of creped me out.

I wouldn't even think about doing that to my kids the mums always seem, so pushy like that mum who's daughter doesn't do it anymore only in America I guess.

I watched it and I have to admit I was more intrigued than disgusted. I don't agree with the excessive makeup and over dressing but if your kid wants to get involved then you support it no matter what. I liked to hear that the competition wasn't opened to strangers and it was just the parents cheering the kids on. There is definitely an age limit on it though, Britney (was that her name?) wasn't impressive as a 17 year old "Darling" pfft. Time to pick up your life and look for a vocation girl!
