So Thomas has been crying for what.... the last 4 hours with breaks to feed. He's so full of wind and has had a dose of gripe water to try and help. Its not little 'im hungry' cries, its big destressing ones. He's been doing this on and off for the last few days and I'm seriously going mad. I've been demand feeding cuz thats all that seems to settle him - i've tried warm baths, white noise, wrapping, giving him a dummy, just holding him when hes really badly upset and nothing seems to work :(
It really sucks cuz the poor wee thing is SO tired! He's constantly yawning. Normally when I pick him up he settles down (and i'm not picking him up straight away when he cries either) Mum gave me a break last night and sat up with him so I could sleep, and she gave him a teaspoon of warm boiled water which he seemed to enjoy after screaming his lungs out. Take him to the Dr. Go with your instincts, if you think there is something wrong then there probably is. It sounds a bit like what Chloe was doing and when I finally took her to the Dr she had tonsilitis and an ear infection! But she never got a temp with those. She would only sleep little bits and was always tired and always feeding, but she would only drink little bits.
Even if it's just for your peace of mind... it's free, or cheap, to take them and it's better to be safe. ------------- Chloe (4 years) and Oliver (3 years). |

Sounds like he might have collic, this is what mum said i did when i was a baby and they finally relalised I had collic.
I think mum used to lean me forward and hold me under my chin and rub my back. Or pop me in the pram and walk round wih it... You could also try a hot water bottle(just a nice warm one tho) and hold it on his tummy while you rub his back, he might find the warmth comforting, and will help him relax a bit while you rub his back. I suffered collic thru my pregnancy aswell and the heat works wonders so It must work the same for a lil baby aswell. ------------- |

have you rung your mw? has he slept much at all? if you're having trouble getting him to sleep, maybe take him for a ride in the car or get DH to take him for a walk in the pram?
otherwise...perhaps try laying him down on his back, lifting his legs up and doing a bicycle motion to try to help relieve the wind........or hold him up high on your shoulders and gently bounce up and down to get him to burp? another thing that calmed charli was laying her (tummy down) on my knees, gently rubbing her back and rocking legs side to side. another thing my mw suggested once was to put them in the pram and go over a bump over and over again.....like a bump in the lino or something?

I'd give your midwife a call too, they usually have reassurance if nothing else. I second Vanessa's idea about the pram too - at Thomas' age you don't need to worry about setting bad habits or anything like that, just do what you gotta do to get him to settle.
He's a bit young yet to think about the biggies like colic or reflux, they both usually start to flare up around 3 weeks, so it probably is just wind. If the boiled water helped, go with it, it can't do him any harm. Big hugs! Hang in there! -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

I would try the boiled water too as it can help settle their little tummies. And be careful not to keep thinking he is hungry and give him more feeds, as they probably wont help the wind. If its the really distressed something is hurting me cry, then feeding might make his wind/tummy worse. I found Infacol much better than gripe water for settling wind pains... give it just before a feed and make sure you burp him thoroughly afterwards.. even between sides!!
I also found the placing Keziah high on my shoulder so the pressure was on her tummy combined with patting and rubbing her back would bring up HUGE amounts of wind.. Also my partner was able to bring up more wind than I could myself.. I'm not sure why, but I'm putting it down to big hands LOL -------------

Yep give him to his dad!  Worked a treat to bring up wind (used to take Jack about 15-20 mins to wind at that age).
I would call your m/w straight away, its what they get paid for. And if all else fails - have you tried a dummy?

Have you tried the 5 'S's?
Swaddling Side (or stomach) lying Shhhing (very soothing sound for baby - needs to be loud and close to babes ear) Swinging Sucking Sounds like he's probably getting way over tired and is now struggling to get to sleep. When my newborn did a 12 hour awake stint, I ended up giving her 40 mls of formula t(o give me a break -MW's instructions) and she fell asleep at last. He finally got some sleep after doing the most epic poo i've ever seen (previous to this he'd been pooing regularly and doing good amounts) but this one, omg it was almost solid. When he did it, he sounded like he was going to explode! Poor little thing. I'll have to write those 5 s's down - never heard all those before. Obviously I didnt learn crap at antenatal classes LOL! See they don't teach you that stuff at antenatal classes! Far too much emphasis on labour and birth and not enough of the important stuff I reckon!
If he's fully breastfed it's normal for him to go a few days without a poo then have a big explosion, doesn't mean he's constipated altho some babies do et quite uncomfy before they finally go.Maya used to explode EVERYWHERE! http://www.thesleepstore.co.nz - The Sleep Store have some good tips on newborn sleep/settling techiques too. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

He's still a grizzle bum.
This morning at 6am I woke up to him shreaking his head off cuz he'd power chucked EVERYWHERE!! EWWW. Poor little boy. I think Matt overfed him last night just to get him settled.
