I need to update DH and my life insurance and get DH some permanent and temporary disability insurance. Where do I start? We have some already but I want to shop around a bit. I have googled it but there seem to be so many companies offering it and I don't know where to go first. Any recommendations?

What we did is actually read up about the company itself. How long have they been established as well and anything we could found.

Then I found a place online as well that had 4 different companies and we just went with one. (life insurance) Disability is given through the company so didnt get an extra policy for that though.

It really depends on how much you want ect. As some companies have different limits ect.

Willie has accidental death insurance thru Westpac, he got declined full cover coz he has diabetes.

I don't have any at all as we have a family trust set up that would take care of the kids if anything happened to me.

We are looking to do this at the moment, and have had Sovereign Insurance recommended by my sister who uses them. Worth giving them a call I would think.

We're with Sovereign too, and used to have disability ins for them as well (when DH was working in a physical job). We went through an insurance broker.

I wondered about using a broker. Can anyone recommend one that is either national or in Akl, preferably West?

Ok before I start yes I work for them But BNZ have life insurance and alot of people who have taken it out are very pleased with it. There is lots of different cover and your best bet is to sit down with someone who is in the know and go over the different types, I know bNZ offer a 30 day free look where you are covered before fully taking out the policy. Not to sound pushy but if you want someone in your area to give you a call to discuss your options PM me your details (eg: Phone number, real name and best time to call - oh and nearest branch) I can get them to give you a free no obligation call

I think (and this is personally not a bank person saying this) Life insurance is very important, even if its just a $10,000 Funeral insurance cover. Cause really do you want one of your lovedones going into debt to pay for your funeral?

ETA: i have always been a bit dubious about brokers due to the fact that they recommend the company that normally pays them the most rather than recommending the best

We also have through Westpac Life. Not sure how competetive they are as I am staff. If you want I can get one of the girls to give you a quote. PM me if you want me too.

I work for Sovereign and can recommend a broker or provide you with a quote.  Either PM me or ring the Customer Services team on 0800 500 108.

I'd definitely suggest you talk to an independant financial adviser who will be able to recommend a suitable product.

It's also really important to look at a companies claims rating, not just they're prices.  There's not a lot of point paying for cheap life cover with a company that can't pay out when push comes to shove.  I don't know where other NZ companies rate but Sovereign has an A+ (Superior) claims rating from A.M. Best Company Inc of New Jersey.

I have just signed up this year for life insurance for DH & I. We went with Soverign
We used a guy based on the shore, he came to us in west Auckland and was really really nice....he has been doing it for a long time with Soverign....when I rang Soverign to get advise they said he was good....
Pm me and I can send you his details if you like.

We're with ING. They're reasonably pricey (ie you can get cheaper) but when we had our policies reviewed by a different broker, he said we had the best deal we could and they were the ones he recommended most highly.

At work, I've dealt with Sovereign for disability claims for clients and found them really good.
