anyone see the news? after three goes at a temp filling i had a proper one done during pregnancy she said while they try to avoid doing them it's perfectly safe..not what the news said(at least from what i got?) any thoughts? ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

It's the mercury in those silver ones and the xrays (for radiation) that they like to avoid during pregnancy.. those white fillings are okay, but it's not recommended to get any dental work done unless it's really necessary as it could wait until bubs is born -------------

yeah it couldnt wait.. i had three sets of injection..she said it crosses the placenta but i had special stuff so it was fine..so three sets of 3 over 3 weeks in the end i had to get it done and she said it was fine.. hmm:( it wasn't a white one..i was 28/29/30 weeks ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

i've had three white fillings (6 injections!) and a wisdom tooth out (two injections). Dentist said it was fine in second trimester and I just took his word for it . .. ------------- |

there is a type of injection the dentist can use that is fine during pregnancy (and one that isnt so great,but i cant think what it is )
its amalgam fillings they are more wary of doing, if its just a smallish one its not such a big deal, i've had plenty of pregnant women come in for fillings etc,one of the main reasons dentists recommend holding it off , is because its uncomfortable for some pregnant ladies And xrays are a no no , we had a lady come in and she didnt tell us that she was 10 weeks pregnant til AFTER the xray was taken , she had been before and didnt think to tell us to update her file, I was so mad , she was so nonchalant about it |

| KA I remember when you got it done, you HAD to have it otherwise you could've got an infection which would have been worse (and those sorts of things could lead to prem labour). They will still have to give fillings to pregnant ladies in pain or those who need them while they're pregnant, but like anything I don't think it's recommended unless you have to (so don't stress hun!) |

I'm so angry from seeing that, my stupid dentist made me get one after saying its perfectly fine. It wasn't hurting me and I reckon I could of waited.

sometimes a tooth mightnt be hurting and it has infection spreading into the nerve, so they recommend a filling before it turns into a root canal. But, it probably could have waited just a bit longer I have had HEAPS of pregnant ladies come in in the four and a half years ive worked at the dentist and im yet to see one who had any problems relating to it, i've also seen dentists say to the woman that it would be better if they came back after baby was born , so most will do whats safe for the mum and baby -dentists do like to avoid being sued etc .... |

I had a root canal and 2 fillings (1 amalgam) while pregnanct with my first. Dentist was more careful but said things would be fine - and they were.
I see the dentist again tomorrow (18 wks pg) and expect to need at least 1 more filling. I have just come out of hospital (long story) where several specialists said, and I quote - "no one in their right mind would have an xray while they are pregnant". They say an exception would be a foot or hand xray where you 'could' wear a protective cover - but some still gets through and it's not a good idea. As for a 'body' xray I got given all the gory details of how the molecular structure of a fetus/baby is changed with xrays and although if born perfectly healthy there is no way of knowing "what" was changed by the rays and what effect it would have later in life. 
my 2c worth - I feel dentistry is fine as long as you let your dentist know you are pregnant and follow their guidance on what needs to be done and what can wait. -------------
