Now is it that identical twins that aren't heriditary??
On my mums side we have twins galore. Her older brother and sister are twins and my mum has 2 sets of cousins that are twins 1 set is identical and the other fraternal.
So the chances of twins in my family is strong. However no one has had them (and we have a lot of people in my extended family). I have also heard that they skip a generation so that would mean that my generation would have them??
Sorry a bit over the place.

Identical is random, fraternal is heriditary.
I've heard that they skip a generation. That holds true for our family.
eta: to give an example, my mum is a fraternal twin and my great grandmother is a fraternal twin. So it's apparently my turn to pop them out

They only skip a generation on the fathers side as they can carry the gene but it's only the mothers genes(eggs) that determine whether you have fraternal twins.
I am a twin and have twins. There is a history of twins in both my parents families though so was doubly screwed.
I think I had a 1 in 20 chance of having them and now have a 1 in 4 chance of having them again!

Definitely fraternal are hereditary, on the mothers side. My nanna (mums mum) had twins and I am a fraternal twin, so don't really know about the skipping a generation, have heard it is true.
My friend has twins and she has a 1 in 4 chance of having another twin pregnancy!

What Tishy said. The father can pass on the gene to produce more than one egg in a cycle, but only the mother can manifest that obviously so a father could pass the gene to his son, and his son then passes it to his daughter and his daughter then has twins. It can skip more than one generation, or it can present in every generation.
And identical are random, altho I was reading recently that new research suggests there may be a genetic link.

I dont believe it when they say that fraternal twins tend to skip generations. I think it depends on how strong the gene is to start with and again as Maya said, it can be present in every generation. Each family is different.
We managed to trace a faint family history of twins in both our mother's sides of the family. These twins that Im carrying would be the next generation of twins but they seem to be spreading across the family rather than directly hereditary.
On saying that, at this stage, they think that our twins are identical - so not hereditary - they think!
DNA testing is the only absolute answer I guess.

I thought unidentical twins were genetic through the mother's line and identical twins through the father's line?

Do your twins have separate placentas Cat007? Coz if there is only one placenta they are def identical, if there are two placentas they can be fraternal or identical.

Yeah I only found out recently that identical twins isn't hereditary! My dad is an identical twin (although his twin bro died of cot death at 6 months old ) and before my dad came along, his mum gave birth to still born identical twin girls! So all my life I've thought I would most likely have twins! But no, it's only fraternal twins that are hereditary. Phew!!
(But my poor grandmother!! Giving birth to stillborn twin girls, then losing a 6 month old baby later as well. She later went on to take her own life, when my dad was 19. It was all too much for her.)

Wow i didn't know any of that...on my side of the family my Nana is a identical twin and my family has always said it skips a generation so that would make it my generation to have twins but none of us have so far.....
On JK's side his grandmother gave birth two 3 sets of twins...two identical and one fraternal.....
So does that mean we won't have twins but our daughter might? I thought our chances were higher having twins on both sides of the family....I would love to have twins but sadly i think my baby making days are over after this baby....

You're all mad! And Tishy is doubly mad coz she's done it once and wants to do it again!
Twins do rock tho, it's so cool watching them interact (OK, not so much when one is hitting the other over the head with a shoe but most of the time!), I'll never forget watching them at about 8 mths sitting on the kitchen floor passing blocks backwards and forward, it was such an awesome moment!
But they are damn hard work. In the early days it's a relentless mission of feeding and sleeping, with lots of feeding and not much sleeping, and as they get bigger they tag team it to get into mischief.
Even tho I had a singleton first I don't think I really appreciated how demanding twins are until I had Chiara. Having one baby to feed and settle it just blows my mind to think that when the gremlins were little I had to do everything twice over!
