At the begining of my last cycle I ended up in hospital with a rupturing cyst on one of my overy's. I had an ultrasound the other day and it's still there so on Monday I'm off to the doc's where i'll probably get a referal to a gyny.
I was wondering if any of you guys had had one before and if you had anything done. I've been ttc since april last year and was wondering if this was the problem. So has anyone become preg when they new they had a cyst? There's is a strong family history of POCS but so far the doc has ruled this out as my cycle is so reg and I don't have other symptoms. Thanks |

No help really but I was regular as but still had PCOS and my only symptom was acne but had just come of the pill so it was put down to that.
I had tests, scans etc and found out that I only ovulate every 2nd month or every 4th as only one ovary is ovulating and even that one is unreliable but was still getting my periods like clock work each month. Hope that is off some help. -------------

No help here either really, but I've had a problem with several bilateral ovarian cysts in the past. Never to the extent that I've had to have any removed but they always seemed to coincide with really bad periods/chronic stomach cramping even when it wasn't that time of the month.
Whilst pregnant I had to have regular scans to keep an eye on a large cyst that was growing throughout the pregnancy. It got to 6.5cm diameter just before I was ready to give birth, and then all of a sudden afterwards no one mentioned it. I had a lot of unexplained stomach pains for months after my son was born. Part of me wondered if it was something to do with cysts, but when I asked my Dr. she fobbed me off. So now that I've babbled on ....not sure what my point was. I'm not sure if you can fall pregnant when you have ovarian cysts, but I can vouch that you CAN go through a pregnancy whilst having one. ------------- Single Mum to a darling wee boy of 3 years :) |

Yes you can fall pregnant with a cyst (maybe depends on size) - I am living proof!
In 2006 a cyst on the right was 2.5cm and the left was only 1.5cm. I also have PCOS with all the symptoms. You can have PCO (just the cysts on your ovaries) if you have more than one cyst, plus you can just have PCOS (the sydrome) believe it or not. Some of us are lucky enough to have both 
Anyway, I digress. The gynae may want to do a hysteroscopy/laproscopy to biopsy the cyst and see if it is affecting ovulation. Mind do and I am not regular (ie only a few cycles ever!) so it was a fluke I got pg (but hey it happened!). If it is, they may want to remove it and then you should be good to go. There's also drugs like clomiphene that can help you ovulate, but you'll need a clear pathway from the ovary to the cervix to get pregnant. My cousin had a 5cm cyst removed and when they started TTC she had no problems. Her cyst was detected again at 5cm at 7wks so she has regular scans just to make sure it doesn't rupture. But they do tend to stop growing after the first trimester which is good (when all the hormones get directed to the baby rather than all your other girly bits). So there's 2 stories for you anyway! Hope that helps put your mind at ease a bit. Oh, and I would push your doc as much as possible, if there's a chance you have fertility issues from a cyst then you shouldn't have to keep waiting to be referred. |

I had cysts on both ovaries about 6-7 years ago and was in horrific pain, they did scans and then the pain settled down a lot so they decided to leave them until I had more pain etc. Nothing was done and when I got PG with No1 they were detected on my early scans. At the 20 week (and 25 week) scans they couldn't find them! Turns out that they had twisted my tubes around and couldn't be seen from the front, I had to have a CS so they were removed at the same time, We had no probs getting PG either time( and i'm 37), within 3-4 months both times and nothing has shown on my scans this time round so hopefully mine are sorted. Good luck with TTC and also with the cysts. -------------

| Ok, so from the looks of things you can get preg with cysts as well as with PCOS. I take it the photo is of you baby Peanut! Thanks for putting my mind to rest. We'll go off to the Doc's and take it from there. Thankfully we have health insureance and I'll be pushing for this as not a fertility issue (which isn't covered) and more that I have uncomfortable af. Might mean a quicker appointment then if I went public. |

Just to add my 2cents as it may help:
In early Dec last year after almost a year of TTC#1 unsuccessfully my GP sent me off for ultrasound scan... it detected I had 'cysts' on both my left and right ovaries. I was told at the time that they could be functional cysts which occur and diminish of their own accord with cycles or that they could be endometriomas (aka chocolate cysts) which are asscoiated with Endometriosis - therefore I would need a follow-up scan to check 'on progress'. I found out just before Christmas I was actually PG but sadly MC'd on Boxing Day. Because of it being the Xmas and New Years holidays (plus a trip to Melbourne later) and needing to time it right with my cycle I didn't actually get my follow-up scan until mid-March. This showed the left cyst had 'resolved' itself but the right was still there - I was then referred onto Fertility Associates to see a specialist. In April I had the opportunity to sign up for medical insurance with Southern X through my DH's work - no stand down period with this corporate deal, and while I mentioned I had been doing some fertility stuff I was advised this isn't covered (which I kinda already knew). Saw the specialist in May - he scanned me again and said the endometrioma cyst was still there, measuring about 2-3cm and making my right ovary 'stick' to the walls of my pelvis. He finally explained everything properly to me, saying that it is very rare to get these kind of cysts without having Endo in other parts of my pelvis as well - he also asked me about my medical history and I commented on painful AFs and other symptoms. I was advised to have Lap surgery to remove the cyst and excise any endo he was sure he would find - I was booked in to have it last week (though have since had to cancel and go on the public waiting list). Unfortunately, the medical insurance won't cover me for this as they're ruling the endo as pre-existing even tho' the initial investigations, which happened before we took out the policy, were into causes of infertility and nothing about my cysts was truly confirmed until the specialists appointment which happened once we had the insurance. Also the fact that I had had 'painful periods' for some time and mentioned this also counted against me. I guess what I'm trying to say in my long winded way (sorry!) is that be careful of talking about things on a specific timetable if it should happen to blur the lines between the signs of first symptoms and when you signed up for your insurance policy - even if it is supposedly for infertility... they make links where they can to use them as loop-holes to avoid paying out (bitter? me? ok well maybe just a little bit!). ------------- http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">

I had ovian cyst when i was 16. I was in huge pain and got rushed to hospital - because I got my period they blamed it on that even though they had seen thru ultra sound the cysts, a week later i was rushed to hospital again, they had found they had grown 3 times in size and I was internally bleeding as one in flapian tube had ruptured (sorry should of warned not the greatest story to start off with) so I lost my left flapian tube (but years later found out they had left my ovary hanging there). They were non cancereous as well..
Anyhow here the good news - i have had 3 kids with no trouble getting pregnant (in fact I seem to get preggy at a drop of a hat - except Rhyley who took 3 months to conceive). So even if it comes to the point they have to be removed (or anything else round them) It is possible to go on no trouble to concieve. ------------- Ann

Yep you can get pregnant with them. I have done it twice. My gyne didn't want to remove the ones I had at my last lap as he thought I may lose more than just the cyst. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

I had a cyst measuring 3.2cm on my right ovary and it was terribly painful. I have had 2 laps, the first to check for endo and PCOS (thankfully I dont have either) and the second one was to remove the cyst. My gyne said that I shouldnt have any issues conceiving but I guess we shall see in due course.

| it is! My mum's had them and she said they were as bad as giving birth, which made me feel a little better as I'd decided I wasn't going to cope with having a baby if it was worse then the cyst pain. Worse pain I've ever been in. |
