You had your first child? It looks to me like it's more common to have a baby at 19-24. I was 23 and 19 years ago that seemed quite young. None of my friends were having babies and all of the other first time mums in my Parents Centre group were older - i'd say closer to 30. Do you think women are having children younger or is that just my perception?

I was a few weeks shy of 28. I'm the first of my friends to have kids.
I was also the first to get married at 24.

I'm speaking from experience of Ireland though where it's still a more common case of marriage first , babies second.

I was 22, nearly 23 when my boy was born. Got married at 21.

I think the general trend is older (i'm the youngest by far in my coffee group, most are in their 30s) but I have noticed that on ohbaby I think there's more younger mums (percentage wise) than there is in the general population if you know what I mean.

And yes I think the trend does seem to be that women are having children at a younger age. The majority of my friends I went to school with now have children or are TTC ...most of my friends are in or around the same age bracket and I have no real 'friends' without kiddies.

23- I was the same though, all the women in my parents centre group were mid 30's. Almost every single class or coffee group I went to I was youngest by at least 10 years. I still find the same now though- at Charlottes school all the other Mums are way older than me, most are in their late 30s early 40s. I'm almost 27 now and I am still the youngest at all of Kates classes by a fair bit. Could be the areas we choose to live though?

I'll be 37 when he's born. I'm the first in my family and we've been together 10yrs - the trend, so I've heard, is older rather than earlier as women want to build their careers 1st.

I was the youngest by at least 3 years in my antenatal class. Found it very hard to socialise with the other mums as they all had so much more in common with each other

I was 21 when I had Jackson (planned). The trend is definitely older, I was the youngest one in my coffee group (with WRXandJosh being the next youngest!) most of whom are in their late 20's/early 30's.

I have one friend that has a 2 year old and only cos he was a woopsy. Most of my friends won't be considering it for another few years. I do think it depends where you live, socio-economic factors etc (that sounds snobby but its true).

Oh dear I'm the youngest I was 17, turned 18 when he was 6 months.

Most of my friends are older, so I can't judge on the "having kids younger" then... I tend to not hang out with people my own age anymore, we just don't share the same interests (probably because the 1 that does have a kid, who was born on the same day as Seb and is a little younger than me is a right crappy mum so I avoid her)

I think it really does depend on where you live. In my coffee group we have 2 or 3 ladies in their early 40's & the youngest Mum is 29. So around where I live, "older" definitely seems to be the trend.

I found i didn't quite fit in when i had Paris, as there were either lots of teen teen mums, like 16/17 or lots of older mums in the late 30's/early 40's. I felt in between.

I was, and still am, the first of my friends to have babies. Which is quite funny really, cos they were all the ones going out to parties and getting up to dodgy behaviours all through highschool, and i was the goody good. lol

I always knew I wanted to start my family whilst I was young, but wasn't intending on being this young.

You young mums totally freak me out! You all seem to me to be SO mature and incredibly capable for your young ages!

Man, when I was 18,20,24 or however young you all are I was shockingly immature, and was far too interested in partying and travelling the world to have even considered having a child. And here you all are, PLANNING babies.

I was preggers at 21, had him at 22. DH was 28 though.

I was at the younger end of our AN class, DH was in the middle age wise but we had a very strange group. None of us have kept in contact.

I always wanted to get baby making 'out of the way'. Never really had the urge for huge partying or big OE's etc.

Yeah I think cos I got my OE outta the way when I was 17/18, got my degree etc I felt I'd done what I wanted to. I totally don't feel too young, it just feels that this is the way it's mean to be.

And same as Stacey, my DH is a bit older... 7 years in fact... he turned 30 shortly after Harry was born. Not that you'd know it, he's just a big kid

And now here I am at 27 pregnant with number 4 And still unmarried!

I always wanted to be a youngish Mum, ideally around 25-26 coz I wanted to finish uni first and work for a while but Maya had other plans and once I'd had her I figured I might as well get it all over and done with, I didn't want to spend my 20's with a little baby, then do it all again in my 30's, I always said I would stop at 30 (only now I'm stopping at 27!).

There are 2 people younger than me in my coffee group and 3 older.

I think women are starting to have children earlier again, I know that with all the fertility problems that women have had from waiting till their 30s it was very much on my mind to get on with it before then and I think alot of other people my age and younger are thinking that way as well.

I was 19 with my first. Was the oldest in my anti-natal class by far (Even though it was a teen class) Where we live there seems to be a lot of really young mums.
DD2 I had just before my 22nd Birthday and hopefully thats the last. By the time they are at school I will still be young enough to start something else.
I think there are a lot more really young people having babies theese days. And those that manage to survive past their teens without getting pregnant tend to wait a bit longer.

I will be 27 or 28 depending if she comes early or late. Have been with DH since I was 21 though so it has been a long time waiting for him (he's 39). I'd planned on having children (if ever) in my 30s and I am the first of my close friends to get pregnant. They won't be popping them out for about 5 or so years. I'm probably one of the younger ones in my antenatal class but can't really tell.
I think the national average right now is 30.5 years for first child, so while it might seem that there are a lot of young Mums, there must be more older ones

And that's cos the focus is always put on the younger mums, because it's not considered 'right' to have children at a young age.

30. We did antenatal classes through the parents centre and we were one of the youngest couples there - average would be around mid 30s I'd say. I think it depends on where you live too, urban areas have older mums I think?

Jack was born a few months after my 27th birthday. I had ealways thought that I would have had kids in my early 20's but now realise that I wouldn't had had time to go to Uni, overseas or at least have a few years of a career first. For me it was the right time.
DH was just shy of 29 when Jack was born, we were married a few months after my 24th.

I am sure that it was said a while ago that the average age of first time mums was around 28 last year, or it could have been 26. I just remember that I was a year off!

I was 17 and DH was 15 when i first got pregnant ( we have been together 8 years, married 2 years) but i had a MC at 14 weeks.
I was 20 when i had Bailey, 22 when i got pregnant and had MC at 6 weeks and 23 when i has Astin.
I had always planned to be a young mother as long as i had degrees/qualification which i do and so does DH so having kids young hasnt held us back.
I had planned to wait 10 years before having 3rd/4th as i would only be in my early 30s but its not going to work out that way.

Someone mentioned the fertility factors - that was our reason. Seeing as I was due to start clomid we kind of figured we might have a few months up our sleeves - nup!

I was like you Arohanui - had got the degree and living so to speak out of the way, got married so was ready to go. And I would much rather get the 'baby thing' (lol) out of the way so I can then start working as I don't think I'd like to start teaching then leave for the amount of time I'll be taking off (3ish years)

I have had children early due to fertility factors. i haven't have any problems getting pregnant I just knew that my endo was going to take over and I would need a hystrectomy early and now at 26 I have been told I will have it done just after I turn 30 - I am fine with that as I know I have had all the children I want to have.

I was 36 when Gabs was born, but we had been trying for 3 years by the time she was born. I wanted to have my first by 35.

I didnt' want kids when I was younger I was too busy enjoying life without that responsibility and then studying to get a good job going before having kids, plus I wasn't going to have them before i got married and although DH and i have been together for 12 years we have only been married for almost 4.

There's pros and cons either way though.

I'll be 29 when this one arrives.

I had wanted two by the time I was 30, but nature wasn't on our side. DH will be just shy of 30 when we have our boy. We got married when I was 24.

27 (have just turned 28 and Rohann is basically 3.5 months). I didn't want to leave it too late as have had a lot of prolems to do with my girly bits, and figured if I had a problem conceiving I would need the time to deal with it. And apart from a mc I didn't have any probs.
DH and I have been together 8 years and married 5.5 years.

I'm 26 and just pregnant with #1. I always wanted to have kids relatively young but wanted to be married to DH first (we'd been together 6 years when we got married). Got married the day before my 26th b'day and was pregnant 2 months later - the first month of TTC

It's really interesting to see what people consider to be "young" or "old" to have kids back home in NZ. Over here (in Singapore) I'm considered young - I have 3 friends here who are also pregnant and they're all in their mid 30s.
