Don't know about anyone else but I hate the fact that the ads for exercise, smears etc are done by Islanders and Maori's. I think that they need to aimed at everyone as it is a NZ wide problem with woman not getting smears and everyone needs to exercise.

It's because Maori and Pacific Islanders are grossly over-respresented when it comes to health issues such as cervical cancer, obesity etc, partly coz of genetic predisposition, but also coz of cultural barriers which stop people having screening done/getting treatment.

It's just chucking funding where it is most needed, and where it can potentially do the most good.

(spot the person who did the research report in inequalities between Maori and Pakeha at uni )

On the same subject, I find my girls interesting coz they are half and halfs. So they are more likely to have health probs coz of their Maori genes, but statistically likely to have better access to healthcare coz of their Pakeha heritage, so will be interesting to see how that balances out as they get older.

Yeah I know they are, but I know a few "white" woman who stil won't go and have smears done even thou there is all that advertising on th TV. Just annoys me, I think I am in one of those moods.

But would they go if there were white women in the ads on the TV? Coz some people just won't go no matter what you do.
I'm particularly anal about smear tests and I frequently get on my soap box and lecture my friends about how important it is.

I am too and I too get up on my soapbox about them too. I told my friend that I would hold her down if she didn't get one down within the week.

I know some people won't go no matter what race they are, doesn't matter what advertising there is on TV (thinking the smoking ones).

Having a smear test = SCARY
Having to ring around complete strangers to find somewhere that will do it = SCARY
Paying for it = INSANE!

OT a little, but one of my MALE students marched in to my class a few days ago and said
"MISS< they should tell people on those cervical smear adds it's only for women - I asked my doctor if I needed one and he laughed at me"

I think he was joking

This is one thing I am very good at. I'm never late for getting this checked.

I think the ads are actually alright. It deals with the issue of Maori women not wanting to get it done (more so than white women). It deals with the fact that its quick, painless and easy as well. Though that could use some work as I know some people who think its so scary when its really not.

LOL Liz!

I hadn't really thought about the ads being aimed at Maori of PI. I just feel a bit guilty every time I see them because I've been overdue for a follow up one for a loooooong time now.
*Sticks head back in sand* Lalalalala.....

LMAO Liz! Poor guy

And Alia you're right, paying for them sucks the big one, it should be free like a mammogram.

And as for those of you who are overdue for yours.... don't even get me started on how my mum had to have a full hysterectomy at 36 and if she hadn't had regular smears and had it picked up well....

I really hate the dentist, the pain, smell and the price

I was due for one in Feb but will get it done after baby is born, couldn't help that I was preg when it was due! They don't scare me, esp after my m/w had her arm up to the elbow up there trying to find my cervix when I was in labour with the gremlins - makes a speculum seem pretty tame!

But I agree Kas, I totally don't do dentists no way, no how!

I had mine done recently *feels smug*

I hate having to pay for it too so I tend to save up my minor ailments and issues and then go and see the doc about all of them at once, when I got my smear done I also got a new script for condoms, a new script for gluten free pasta and bread mix and a medical cert as I was off work with a cold.

I think that's exactly right.

Just because they are Maori/PI women, doesn't mean it doesn't apply to you too Becks

I'm gonna have one soon when I get my IUD checked. (Which I should get done soon because I didn't have the post-insertion check )

I think I embarrassed my doc more than me at my last cervix-related check up. I started talking to her (student doc) and realised she knew one of my friends, Jed, so started rabitting on about him while she was doing her thang. Poor girl.

I had one bad smear experience, it wasn't painful or anything but I was embarrased by the disgusted look the doctor had on her face - I am not unclean and keep myself tidy too so I don't know what her problem was.  Needless to say I changed doctors immediately and haven't had any issues since.

I really don't mind them being done, a 5 minute smear and cervix check is much easier than pushing a baby out of my vagina for 30 mins.
