Now I am proud of his choice cause you get great careers there but.... He will be one of the first to be sent to war if there was another war.... and that scares me... although hes 6ft 3, solid and 15 hes still my baby

Wow, that's a really brave choice. Good on him!!
If you are able to, maybe you could look at him joining the Army Cadets in New Plymouth? They're fantastic, and you learn so much. It's held on a Thursday night at Boys High - you can join from age 13 and move up the ranks as you go. A lot of guys I went there with are either now in the Territorials or the Army.

Good on him, encourage him to get an education as well then he can sign up as an officer and give orders.

I think its fantastic! They will train him up and provide him with skills for life. I am an army brat, and the first generation to not be in the forces in some way, but it wasnt for me! Think its awesome that at 15 he knows what he wants in life.

Well done for raising such a sensible young man!

Good on you Josh. If you want to bring him over to Waiouru Ann I will have security clearance to take him onto camp and he can have a look around if he wants to. We could probably get him to have a look in the barracks and alsorts of places with notice.

I always thought it was NCEA level 1 that they needed to get into the forces (things have changed). I can say with the army pushup pushup pushups with the fitness side of things.

Becks - I was looking at the Airforce papers he got and it said Level 2 for the career he would like to get into - NCEA confuses me at the best time - what ever happened to 5th and 6th cert Showing my age there LOL ...

Oh and that would be cool for him to look around sometime. i do beleive ATC takes them on camps to the barracks and do true army life... bet its a shock to the system for some of them (probably JOsh included LOL)

Wow good on Josh! my hubby's a soldier, great pay for a guy with no quals. I definitely think its important for him to get quals in the army in case he ever wants to leave.

I think army RFL (required fitness level) is 2.4km run, pushups and pressups? There are levels for those and times for the run, you get more time the more ancient you get lol

The RFL for the army is 2.4km in less that 10.30 minutes (at altitude in Waiouru). 28 real proper pushups, and 60 odd curl ups.

I know NCEA level 1 is school cert , I know the requirements to get into University but thats about it

Hi Ann,
What an amazing son you have. I think is so wonderful that at 15 years of age he knows exactually what he wants to do with his life.
My brother joined the Army at 17 and to be honest that was the best decision for him, he come home after 1 year and he was an amazing man.
My brother also served oversea (war).
I think your son is an amazing man to decide at 15 what life holds.
Congratulations on bringing up such a fantastic son.

I would be a bit scared too Ann, but how proud you must be to have a Son who wants to be a part of his countries armed forces!

Definately agree about him getting qualifications!!!!

Becks, the timing depends on your age, its definitely not that much for younger ones I don't think. Hehe my uncle gets something ridiculous like 12 minutes to do his, he is 50 though. DH gets 10ish, but does it in just over 9 as he's super fit. And the pushups etc decrease with age too.

Ann, the cadets might be able to put Josh in touch with a PT at camp who could take him through a real RFL to see how he'd go?

Ann I know having done Physics was something DH needed.
Also now the airforce fitness test is the same as the army one.
DH did 6th form, no idea what the means in NCEA

Hi all - thanks for all your posts.

Josh is a pretty level headed kid (he'd hate it if I told him i called him a kid lol) Although when i asked was he going in at 17 - and I said but thats only 2 years time. Really made him think cause he was like well i might not go in that early and stay at school a little longer... aww my baby

His fitness level might not be what it should be around the running but I am sure he will do something about that as he gets so detirminded when he puts his mind to it.
