Is it normal to serve alcohol at kids birthday parties?
Alex's first birthday is coming up next month and until someone said something to me the other day it had never occurred to me to offer anything stronger than orange juice

We had bubbly at Joshua's first birthday party.
Really, the first birthday party is far more for the parents (IMO). We had only a couple of kids there, mostly it was adults, with adult food and bubbly for those who wanted it. His second birthday was totally different though - more for him and his buddies, and definitely no alcohol! |

It's totally up to you. We haven't served alcohol at either of Michaela's parties. Truth be told it never actually occured to me to serve alcohol at her first birthday (that'll be the sleep deprivation) and her 2nd birthday party was at morning tea time (DH doesn't like me to start drinking until lunch
Clare is right though, the first birthday is more about you and celebrating the fact that you've been parents for a year and are about to embark on toddlerdom. If you want to serve booze go ahead, otherwise be sure to crack open a bottle once everyone has gone home and toast yourselves for making it to 1 yo. -------------

Like I said before we had a huge party for Zaara's 1st. Started at 6pm and was at a hall....and because it is mainly for adults we had beer (we had to get a licence to serve it at the venue).
But if you are having a mainly kids party then I thing Just juice is fine...but if there are many adults then may be you could have beer....Upto you! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

We always have alcohol at Sienna's parties and we will for the twins party as well, I think mainly as there are adults but also because thats they type of friends we have and our parties tend to be large about 50 people we make it more for the kiddies during the afternoon and then later on at night for the adults, both her 1st and 2nd party ended way after 1am.

hadn't occured to me either, we are having a midday party and making a non alocholic fruit punch for the adults and water and watered down fruit juice for the kids. I guess it also depends on the time of the day of the party..... ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |

We have never had alcohol at kids parties and probably never will (until their 21sts maybe ) but then we are largely an alcohol free house anyway. My Dad did have bubbly at the girls' christenings tho. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

I think we had a box of beers for the boys and some wine, but none of it was really touched it was more just in case anyone wanted something. -------------

If you don't mind if people drink but don't want to supply it, you could make it BYO.
I have been to 1st birthday's where there has been alcohol and some where there hasn't, doesn't really matter. I think as someone says it depends on what time of day too, if its afternoon but you are having it carry on till evening for adults then get them to BYO, save your pennies. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

The last two 1st birthday parties I have been to, both had beer and wine as there were a lot of adults at the party. Mind you, nobody got drunk, it was just a lunchtime drink if any of the adults wanted one... which a lot of them did! We are having the party at midday and maybe there willprobably be some wine or beer for the adults of course lol. Then later on me and my friends and family will celebrate with a few drinks

For both my boys 1st birthdays we have had BBQ's. Andrew's was a lunch at my parents place and there was beer there (and I think wine). Josh's was a dinner and there was beer and wine there - Nigel's cousin was getting right into the wine and ended up a little drunk - good thing he is a funny drunk. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

I have a strict no alcohol policy at all kid related things- birthdays, naming days etc. Only because FIL is an alcoholic and I don't want my kids being exposed to that kind of drinking. If I knew that everyone would drink sensibly I wouldn't mind them having some at maybe the first birthday and their naming days- but I have learnt my lesson (he got so drunk at our wedding he went around slurring at everyone the whole thing was 'a*se about face', groping my friends and eventually had to be carried out to the car and taken home half way through the reception). ------------- Jen, Charlotte 7 & Kate 3

It never occured to me the have alcohol at Jack's first birthday until Mum mentioned something to me, she said that some people might like a drink with their lunch - I was sort of out voted by the family. It didn't bother me and as I don't drink much and didn't want the expence I made it BYO. Some people bought a few beers or a bottle of wine but it was very low key, plus adults out numbered kids at the party.
I definately won't be having alcohol at any of his other parties though. ------------- Lindsey

We had a big party for Kahtrell's 1st birthday with family coming from all over the place. We didn't serve alcohol, some of the men brought beers, and when it was all over my sisters and I, and my mates from high school had some drinks together, but they brought their own stuff.
You don't need to supply alcohol if you don't want to . Its their decision to drink so let them take their own! -------------
