Ok ladies - give me your combined wealth of knowledge!! What suggestions do you have for what to take for labour and the few days in Birthcare??? We've packed the bubba bag, but the mama bag is a bit trickier. What did you use/not use, need/not need, wish you'd taken.... all of it!! Any ideas gratefully received

Wish I'd taken - some decent clothes to come home in (all the pics of Maya's homecoming have me looking scruffy!), something to read (I did have random moments of boredom), food!!! (Birthcare have nice meals, but they are small!).

Took and didn't need - pads - the ones they provided were awesome.

Took and needed - lots and lots and lots of undies! I kid you not, I prbably used about 15 pairs in the 3 days I was there! Breastpads - can't remember if they are supplied but I think I used my own.

Oh and sneaky tip - pilfer some of their nappies and pads... but you didn't hear that from me...

i would take your own maternity pads, the ones birthcare provides were like sandpaper on my poor bruised vagina.
breastpads too, i forgot mine and my milk came in really quick.
cellphone charger
lip balm
those are the only non-obvious things i can think of at the moment, preggy brain!!

Juice, I got sick of drinking water..

Your own pillow! With a pillowcase in a bright colour, so you don't leave it there by mistake.

Earplugs lol, I didn't take any but if I did I might have had a decent nights sleep, the other baby sharing the room with us cried all night long, mine sleep peacefully

Comfy pjs!

A cute outfit for bub to come home in, I took size 000 and it almost fit her, she was little though at 6lbs 9oz.

Chocolate

A hot water bottle, wheatpack - I took these to the hospital while I was in labour.

yeah - i remember mum bringing me a couple of lemon honey filled muffins from the hospital cafe - boy i treated them like gold - at the time she got them i didn't feel like them, but got hungry late the first night and after that first bite i was hooked!! lol i now actively seek them out when i am on practice at the hospital.   paper and pen - to write down names and phone numbers of other mummies you meet that might want to stay in contact with, (or address book, which you'll probably have anyway) umm, extra pillows? i dunno about where you are gonna go, but i know in our hospital - the beds are the old ones that take huge effort to adjust between sitting and lying, so i just had a few pillows i would stack behind myself so i could sit comfortably to feed without having to adjust the bed.

The beds at Birthcare rock - they have a remote control thingie. They had the same ones in the womens assessment unit at Akl hospital when I was there a few weeks ago, so they must have upgraded the grotty ones they had at Nat Womens before they moved.

Pack a tri-pillow - they rock! They're the BEST for when you're learning to breastfeed. In fact, I still use mine now for feeding Mason when I'm at home (I'm too lazy to hold him up!)

Lots of cheap maxipads in case your waters break. I didn't have any to use on the way to the hospital, just my maternity ones which I wanted to save for afterwards.

A small notebook and a pen, to make notes of how you feel, keep a record of when baby feeds/sleeps etc, and keep track of any medication you've taken (I ended up forgetting that I'd taken painkillers already and took twice as many as I needed to!)

High energy snacks for when you're feeding in the night. My fave was custard cream bikkies!

I was told not to drink juice as it can make your urine acidic - lots of fun if you have stitches or grazes! I had powerade though. remember to have a camera with BACK_UP batteries!! a book or something is good - i had an MP3 player/psp. i agree with the pillow - but don't leave it there like i did (thanks PN hospital for returning it!)

Camera and batteries are good... but you need to remember you have them! Nat brought them into the hospital with the rest of the stuff when I went in to have Josiah, but we both forgot we even had the camera until an hour after he was born!

I wish I took a pillow....the pillow in Hospital was made of plastic or some thing....because I was sweating like crazy....could not sleep at all.

Take your pregnancy cloths just in case...I did not fit into my normal cloths.....even tho I fit them now. So you dont walk out of the hospital wearing your PJ's (ahm..Like me).

I hated the hospital food...it was Yuk....so it would be great if some one could bring you home made stuff.

Oh and those pants/shirt PJ's are great and make sure there are buttons in front so that it is easy to breast feed........
