Just wondering, how many of you out there have become pregnant with an IUD or know someone that has? Is it a common thing to happen?

I have an IUD and I have an awful sneaking suspicion that it may have failed...........

G I have no idea but I'm excited for you (even though I know it's not part of your plan).  Whatever's meant to happen generally does.

ETA: Just googled and found out that an IUD is 99% effective.  In other words 1 in 100 women will get pregnant when using an IUD.

toniellis had an unexpected IUD baby, and I have another friend who is expecting baby #4 - also conceived with a "traditional" IUD. So in other words, yep, it can happen!

I know of another person also so I know that its not unheard of.

It is funny, after talking to DH about it, we are actually both a little excited. Yes, its not part of our plans but I am sure we can work around things.

I am not due for another 6 days so will test probably on Tuesday if I haven't seen AF. But I have several symptoms and I do know my body quite well.

No I had mine removed at 11 weeks preggy. It depends on where it is position as to whether it stays in or comes out.
Mine was sitting in my cervix when it was removed (fat lot of good it does sitting there LOL) and reason mine was removed was because it was in a good position to be removed & also because the particular spot it was in meant it was a possible route for infection which can cause miscarriage or prem labour. If it had been sitting further in or if the strings had been lost then it would have had to stay in until Bubs was born, which usually doesn't cause any poblems although small possibility of prem labour.

No update yet, I have been feeling super ouchy crampy for the past three days. I am going to wait it out until tomorrow to do a test (as AF is only really due today so I want to see if she arrives before spending money on the test).

I'm pretty sure you could still rely on the IUD. I mean, it's one of the options that doesn't really have the option of user error which means it is more dependable than condoms (user determined of course!) which have technically have a higher efficacy rate.

I think everyone has to remember that if you are having sex, then you are at the risk of an unplanned pregnancy. Only solution is to abstain

I agree.  No form of contraception is 100% guarenteed but the IUD is 99% effective which is pretty high - condoms claim to be 98% effective (although other studies have shown it's closer to 86% when you take into account the margin for human error).

Oops... just looked it up and even 'techincally' Jo is right... IUDs are much more effective than condoms.

oh yeah IUDs ARE pretty much the best form of contraception to use (which was why I got one in the first place) unless you go for sterilisation... I was just one of those very few lucky ones that it failed for LOL
And it did work for about 14 months for me

Ok - AF did actually arrive this month but it is a B*tch of a period! I won't go into detail but lets just say it is a big cleanout and its mega painful.

But it has prompted us to plan our next, a bit sooner than we thought. We 4 trips booked over the next 9 months, to Australia and Fiji so I want to be able to enjoy those - but we will start TTC on 1 June 09!
