Subject: T.V, sippy cups and speech

So I just had 13month PAFT appointment and the rather touchy subject of T.V came up. We normally have the T.V on C4 or juice because I can't stand the house being so quiet and we also have it on playskool as Neosha loves the music.

I was told Neosha was an advanced talker today and then 10minutes later was told that the T.V will make her language develope much more slowly so is she ahead or behind? Now im confused. I have also been told that bottles and the toppee tippee sippy cups that everyone uses ALSO slow their speech developement, both of which we STILL use. Brings me back to my point, I thought my child was an advanced talker.Hmmmm

How many hours do your kids get to have the TV on for? Even when they arent watching it I mean we have it on and Neosha is not sitting in front of it watching.

If its true about all the cups, bottles and TV slowing the developement of a childs speech, why the heck is my child a early talker??

What are your guys thoughts on the subject?

T.V is off and won't be on during the day anymore, Neosha doesn't seem to care so thats a bonus I guess.

Oh I would like to add the TV isnt my permanent babysitter we do read and play games lol Its just the kids music for baby that I like

i have never heard of any of that in all my studies, is PAFT run by qualified people or just people with opinions?

can you put a stereo on instead so that the house isnt so quiet?

Seb doesn't watch tv at all here, it's just not important to us, we have music on most of the time though, he hasn't had a bottle since hmm... 16 months? Had his milk in a sippy cup for a while, though he does have a sippy cup for water now, cause he ALWAYS wants little drinks, and I don't want water all over the lounge! He is a slow talker, so prooves a bit false here.

I have heard that babies shouldn't have bottles from 12 months onwards but never heard that about sippy cups. I always thought once the bottles are out that is the alternative until they can drink from a normal cup. Having said that Spencer still has bottles at the moment but will be weaning as soon as he will actually drink his milk from a sippy cup.
No idea about the TV but I wouldn't have thought them having it as background noise would make any difference what so ever and I thought them watching them caused more problems with eyes/reading than with talking.

I get sick of my CDs but we do play them quite a bit as well, the TV is on for maybe 3 hours during the day as background noise and stereo for the rest and DP Has the TV on at night but Neosha has gone to bed by that stage.

PAFT people do have qualifications becuase my one told me she sat something to become a PAFT teacher, I can't remember what though lol.

We have two bottles here a day
Free flow sippy cup while at home and the straw one while out becuase she would spill it. I was told they should have open cups, that would go EVERYWHERE

Yeah I was told to wean the bottle from12 month months as well but I will start once she is 14 months seeing as we have cut it down to two bottles now

Bah I would take that advice with a grain of salt. There are a couple of programmes Ashleigh watches most days. Mainly so I can have a shower in peace and also cook her dinner in peace. And at 24 months, she is still have 1 bottle of milk a day - she just won't drink out of a sippy cup. She has a straw cup for her water and still hasn't mastered using a normal cup without spilling it all down herself.

Paige watched and watches loads of tv....mostly on weekends these days or from 6:30 for an hour but when she was little she watched tons of DVDS...WIGGLES..Blues Clues etc...She is 9...brainy as a button and gifted...she also used TT sippy cup til 3ish cause I couldnt be bothered with the mess....There is no problem with her whatsoever....

Re bottles......do know of two girls who had bottles up til 2 1/12 and it completely ruined their teeth...NOT their speech!!!!

Paige and Blake never had bottles and I stopped the inaugral Milk deal well before Paige was 18 months as been brainwashed by Paeds they dont need bottles of milk after 12 months as should be getting calcium requirements from food etc....

I also would take it with a grain of salt!

Personally I'd be much more likely to rely on the info if I got it from a speech therapist experienced in paeds or an early childhood teacher, not from PAFT scheme.

We often have the TV on as background noise aswell. Keira usually ignores it but will often stop to watch Hi-5 and dance around. She does often watch it while eating breakfast and when we are getting ready.
Keira is a very advanced talker - she doesnt stop!
She also still has a bottle sometimes when she sleeps at night. We usually just leave it in her bed and occasionally when she wakes up and is thirsty she has a little drink and falls back asleep. Although we are trying to give up that. Anything else gets the bed too wet. I give her sippy cups for her to have little drinks during the day otherwise we end up with a lot of spit drinks to clean up.

ok, Caitlyn was saying 3 word sentences by her first birthday , her vocab list at one was 60 words, by 18months it had nearly doubled, and she watched Bumble every morning and may have got a glimpse of Oprah while i was watching it and she was toddling around .

As for the bottle /sippy cup thing....i cant actually remember !

I hate making comparisons, I try my best not to ...but OMG Caitlin said 20 times more than what Lucas did at 12 months ...3 words if I'm lucky and he's not a big TV watcher AT ALL! No 3 word sentences here. I'm not phased though, he reads his book and will point out and say'cat', 'car' goes 'brmm brmm' etc etc. So cute. As long as he's happy & healthy & I give him the best start possible by reading books and interacting with him, he will pick up things in his own time

Is she really intelligent & advanced now that shes at school or basically the same level as all the other kiddies darl?

We have tv on most mornings for 1/2 hour so I can get through the shower and know that the kids are not getting into mischief. Then maybe again for max of an hour later in the day. I tend to save tv for those times when I really need it as if it's on all the time here the kids tend to switch off to it and i can't simply suddenly tell them "time to tune into the box now". I too hate aquiet house and have music on constantly, we usually play a couple of the kids cd's and then some of mine or the radio.

As for the sipper cups my 2yo still has one when having anything but water as I got soo sick of our cream carpets getting marked. He has very advanced speach so I'm not in agreement with PAFT's theory there.

the more speech children are exposed to the better their speech development will be thats why daycare kids often speak really well because they are surrounded by people talking all day, so you would think people talking on tv would probably help (not that im a big tv fan) i majored in speech and language development for my BEd and never read anything about the sippy cup bottle thing, so might be a new idea or it may not have been fully researched yet

sorry i didnt mean for my comment to sound rude before about the paft people, it just sounded very similar to something my jumping beans lady would say and it gets up my nose a little bit hehe,

steph, dont worry about lucas girls tend to speak earlier and more than boys but they catch up in the end

Charlotte is allowed to watch a maximum of 1 hour a day- it usually winds up closer to 30 mins. I would much rather her be playing, reading or running around outside than stuck inside watching TV. I also find on the odd occasion she has got to watch more than an hour she isn't as well behaved. When they're watching TV they aren't interacting with you, they aren't using their imagination- so it makes sense it would be less stimulating for them to watch TV rather than do other stuff.

Kate watches no TV at all. Like with Charlotte, I'll let her start watching the odd thing once shes 2.

Studies have shown a direct link between how much TV a child between 1 and 3 watches to both childhood obesity and ADD http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Truth-About-the-Effects-of-Too-Much-Television-on-ADD-or-ADHD&id=683582 - link . Peace- this one is more 'scientific' but I thought the other one gave the gist in layman's terms rather than all the fluff of this one http://www.seattlechildrens.org/home/pdf/early_television_and_attentional_problems.pdf - link they both make the same points, this just has the scientific proof to back it up.

As with the cup/bottles- I guess it makes sense that any kind of constant 'unnatural' type sucking would make the muscles develop in a certain way that could effect speech. Its one of those things though- makes life very tricky giving a 12 month old open cups! Kate has her 3 sets of milk out of a tommee tippy sippy cup and her water out of the straw one. I can't see those changing for a while!

yeah definitely true for childhood obesity and the stimulation of the moving colours and lights is said to affect adhd

i have taught hundreds of kids who have had bottles well past 2 and speak perfectly clearly

the only thing i have noticed can delay speech development is children that have dummies in their mouths all day so therefore dont practise

Sorry Jennz, but that link isn't the greatest, there is no facts nor figures or results from studies it's just "TV is bad for under 2's mmk" then it talks about it being OK for kids 3-5...

I do remember watching on the news (TV3, sorry I have no linkys) that 1/3rds of all ADD/ADHD behaviour is attributed to TV watching and 2/3rds of that is also related to environment and parenting.

she said too much ! honestly , all i heard was her , all day , talking about cr*p ! drove me up the wall, and it made sense, it just wasnt telling me anything interesting , like what was on tv , (apart from "bumble on now mummy?" ) or if a hot guy was checking me out (as this never happened it didnt really matter ) .
hmmm, now shes about the same level as everyone else in her class, maybe even a bit less , shes had a bit of time off, going to australia etc
She walked early too, but shes now no more advanced physically or mentally than anyone else her age .
And dont make comparisons, honestly , too many parents get worried that their child isnt the same as what other kids are, sounds to me like Lucas is right up there where he should be and doing fine , the only advice i can dispense is try not to talk for him, if he points to something , have him try figure the word out for himself (but your pretty on to it, you probably already know that )

Well my children watch heaps of TV and both don't stop talking. It is mostly Playhouse Disney so is aimed at their age group.

As for the bottle. Josh still has a few bottles a day and at the moment I am not interested in getting rid of it even thou my Plunket Nurse has suggested getting rid of it.

Well I don't know of anybody who has a one year old that will sit in front of a TV and watch it to be honest, Neosha is wandering around the house "helping" me do housework or chasing the cat but as soon as she hears the chicken song she stops to have a dance lol.

I haven't yet seen any behaviour problems either.

I guess im not a "listen to the statistics" kind of mother, in saying that I don't believe in XBOX's and PLAYSTATION's for kids or endeless hours spent sitting in front of the box with a bag of chips in hand. THIS is where the problems start occuring and I don't see harm in a couple of songs about counting to 10 or about farm animals lol I certainly don't think it will make her obese and we do the touch your toes song together which gets her moving about as well. I have heard the claims though and think they are very real "in some" circumstances.

Heres another spin on the situation I have a cousin who is only 2 weeks older than me, her parents were so strict NO lollies, NO buying her lunch at school, TV was limited to half an hour a day and she wasn't allowed a computer. My aunt believed she should be doing more wholesome activities. I grew up in a house where TV was on all the time and to be honest I hardly ever watched it when she would come around all the girl would ever want to do is sit in front of the TV it drove me nuts!!!! To this day she consumes her life with TV and food and I honestly believe her parents caused the problem by being so strict on her. It can go either way I guess

And,,those little einsteins ! what a bunch of pretentious arrogant brats ! meh !

C watches some tv, but we mostly play with her dolls , or do pictures together, or if its nice, we play outside, got a nice big back yard.

Ohh we are getting rumbly thunder here atm, FUN!

Ok back to topic, Hot Dog is one of Lucas' fave songs, we get up and groove to it ...can't afford sky here though, I just play the clip on youtube

And Little Einsteins - Lol Kelly I so agree with you about them being pretentious arrogant brats. Couldn't have worded it better. Lucas has one of their dvds, he only cares about the theme song and then he's off exploring!

Neosha's mummy you are right - I don't know of many 12 month olds that actually park their bums and pay attention to tele, their attention spans at that age are next to nothing - well at least Lucas' is. All he cares about is getting into the things he shouldn't and running away from Mummy

i think the worst thing with adhd is that kids are labelled that so quickly when it could be a number of other things

my brother was told he had it, got given ritalin and all the rest of it but actually he is just hypersensitive to yellow colourings in food so has to stick to a pretty plain diet and he is fine now. the paediatrician at the time said to stop him from watching tv and all sorts of hoo haa which was a waste of time

I must admit we have the tv on most of the day. McKayla herself will watch the Cinderella dvd over and over if she could. But she usually dance around ect and jump and skip around the house at the same time.

As for speech she is a bit of a late talker but I dont think tv has anything to do with it. My sister was a late talking. BIL and FIL was real late talkers.
