hi ladies
I am sadly going back to work part time and have decided to have jackson on formula during the day ,and will feed him BM morning and in the evenings. I just have two questions... 1) does anyone else do this? Will my boobs be painfully engorged all day? i am planning on dropping one feed a week and then hopefully by the time i go to work in a month i would have gradually dropped his four daily feeds and replaced with formula 2) How do you know what formula is right for your baby? today i replaced jacksons afternoon feed with 100mls formula. and hour later he projectile vomited almost all of it back up? he was burped and given breaks throughout his feed. could this mean his body didnt agree with it or am i just being completely paranoid  ------------- Mummy to two beauties... In regards to the first question your body makes what milk is needed so when demand drops off so will supply.
When I did the same thing with DS1 plunket told me that it's fine to simply use the cheap formula as the BM provides whatever is additionally added to the expensive ones. As for the rejecting it I'm not sure but maybe he simply took more from the bottle than he'd normally take from the breast or that it was just bad coincidence?? ------------- Sara Corban (22/11/04) Connor (18/04/06) Chelsea (21/05/08)

1) your body should get used to the times of day when you need milk. Well that's what I was told anyway.
2) go for the cheapest and work your way up. S26 (plain) is supposed to be the closest to breastmilk and is only $15 a tin. General reactions to formulas can be things like constipation, excessive vomitting, rashes, wind etc etc. Give him a few tries and if it doesn't get better try a different one. |

I have weaned Eva from BFing onto formula over the past month. Wasn't intending on it happening so quickly, but she has decided she prefers formula to BM  .
My plunket nurse said that all the formulas are pretty much the same. Eva was initially spilly on it, but that settled after a week. I posted a question about formula not long ago and a number of people said to avoid the 'gold'ones, as they can make babies spilly. Good luck! I dropped one feed a week. 1. I work part-time and b/f and have just recently switched Ella to drinking formula while I am at work. Since i didn't do it until she was 11 months I haven't been engorged while at work.....but when I first started working when she was 6 months I definitely t was feeling a bit uncomfortable by the time lunch time arrived and I expressed. I guess with time it will even out, but maybe for a while you could express just enough for you to feel comfortable? 2. in regards to which formula...we went with the gold. When we didn't really try anything else..just gave it to Ella to try and she drank it fine, so that was that. Since it is only 2 bottles a week I didn't do a huge amount of research. Maybe you could get a couple of smaller sachets first to try? ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |

Yep like the others have said you will just produce less milk when there is less demand and dropping one feed a week should be a nice gentle way for your body to adjust.
With the puking it could purely be from using a bottle as they tend to take in more air feeding from a bottle than from the boob so he might just need a little time to adjust to it, that an also formula is a bit heavier and takes longer to digest than BM so that could also be a contributing factor. I would stick with the brand you have for a few more days and then switch if you think it is making him spilly. Allergic reaction would normally result in a rash/ezcema, constipation and in extreme cases breathing problems. -------------
