We want to take the girls to the snow this winter. It will be their first time, so any old snow will do! A workmate suggested we do a much easier trip to Apiti instead of up the mountain. I think Becks, you might have said something about snow in Waiouru?

Where should we go? And when - aside from outside of school holidays? Any tips from those who have been before (with preschoolers, I mean)?

Um yes it is snowing as far down as Taihape at the moment. It always snows in Waiouru and we will be there as of Sunday so if you want a day trip to the snow at least you know coming to Waiouru you have a toilet , and a warm place to thaw out before you head back home.

I think for the first snow you should take the up to the Central Plateau so it is real white snow. Up at Apiti it isn't always big lots and can be quite dirty snow as it thaws out real fast.

Take spare socks and gloves......little kids become very grizzly kids quickly when their socks and gloves get wet and cold....which they will.

Have fun :o)

Teresa, was us that was saying about taking Paris up around her birthday. If you wanna make a day of it we can all pile into our cars and head on up to the mountain, am sure all the girls would have a blast together! - we were thinking of grabbing a little tobbogan thing for the kids to play on in the family area.

We know so far that the dessert road was closed last night, - we had a blast on the way back from holiday last year around july/august when it was snowing as we were going through - it was quite thick in places but we weren't as well prepared as we could have been. I think around then is a pretty good time because there's been enough time for it to get a really good covering everywhere. I said to mike last night after the news said the dessert road was closed "lets go this weekend" to which he said "yeah that's all well and good but you still actually have to get into where the snow is, - if the roads closed you can't do that" silly man stating the obvious... ok so i was being blonde. lol

Drop me a line if you want to do that Teresa - then afterwards we can all head to Becks and bombard her poor wee boys with masses of giggling girls.

Yep we will just have to plan it around me coming back down here too. If they say snow down to 400 metres in the central plateau then don't count on being able to get to me that will usually mean the Taihape to Waiouru road is closed.
