Has anyone had theirs out? I'm needing mine out and I'm scared out of my wits I'm seeing an oral surgeon who has estimated that if I want to go under a general, then it's about $3,000 so I have to decide whether I want to be put out completely or save $1,500 and just be sedated with a local. A no-brainer, right?! I'm petrified I'm going to freak out in the dentist's chair!

If so, please share your stories. And seriously, I'm freaking out, so perhaps only good stories will suffice!

I had all mine out under GA about 8 years ago. It was the best decision to just get them all done at once. I had a great oral surgeon and a good anaes who made me really comfortable. In terms of healing, I got given some good painkillers and they really helped, but was prob right after a week or so. Eating was a bit of a mission, I seem to recall that I ate a lot of KFC mashed potatoe and a lot of jelly, but no drama. The stitches felt a bit wierd and I had a bad habit of playing with them with my tongue!!

It cant have been that bad as I went to a corporate Xmas party 4 days after I had it done and had a great night (what I can remember of it!!! Hmmmm free booze n painkillers...prob not a good mix!!!)

Oh and Southern Cross covered all of my costs...so was "free" for me!

Hi Baalamb

I had my wisdom teeth (all bar one for some reason) out about 7 or 8 years ago. I too had them done under GA and Southern Cross paid for it all. Wasn't a bad experience at all and I am a complete wuss when it comes to dental work! My dentist even gives me gas before an injection .

Recovery wasn't too bad either, like SimSam says they give you really good painkillers and it doesn't take long for them to come right.

Try not to worry too much

Don't panic, it's not always bad. I had six teeth out including my 4 wisdom teeth last year. I had them out by an oral surgeon as two of the wisdom teeth were touching the facial nerve and there was no way in hell I wanted my dentist playing around near that.

I didn't have health insurance, so went with IV sedation. It was great. I have no memory of the surgery at all. I remember very lucidly telling them before they started, that I was going to have 6 out (I was still deciding 6 vs 4), and sitting on the chair - from then to when DH walked in to pick me up, I can't recall anything. I was back at home after about an hour, eating soft food but with very little pain. I never really had pain afterward except if I talked too much, so had 5 days off work (I'm a speech therapist so needed to be able to talk!). I was out and about 2 days later with no swelling. I had one of the best maxillofacial guys and I think his skill made a big difference in post-op recovery.

So if it looks like it will be a relatively straightforward surgery (and your surgeon will know) and you're paying yourself, personally, I'd recommend IV sedation and save yourself $$$$$. Don't be too scared - I was petrified beforehand but it really went well.

I don't think my oral surgeon offers IV sedation, he only mentioned the oral sedation (just a pill). I might check though.

We're with Southern Cross too and we're not covered! We only have a basic plan - do you think that's why? In the 'exceptions' table, it clearly states that 'extraction of teeth' is not covered yet the oral surgeon consultation was...

So, so far, everyone's been under GA??!

Mandz, I'm a complete wuss too, which is why I really, really want to go under GA, rather than local... but I'm having trouble justifying the extra $1,500 (which is cover for the private hospital and GA).

Flissty, to answer your last part, the surgeon has said that the 2 top ones are going to be easy, the bottom 2 are slightly harder in that he'll need to cut them into bits and then pull them out.

Excuse me while I just pick up my fainted self from the floor. I can't even talk about it without going weak!

well i havent had any out , (and wont need to , mine are growing in fine with out causing any necessity to remove them ) BUT i have for the last nearly 5 years seen plenty removed .
Sounds like your bottom two are impacted, dont worry, thats scarier than it sounds, whether you opt for GA or not you will be anethetised and all you'll feel is some gentle pushing.

Personally , im not a huge fan of GA unless its absolutely necessary , ive heard some not so good stories of people who have had GA

Oh and all those who are counting themselves lucky that they dont have wisdom teeth ...sorry , but some people dont get theirs til they are in their forties

Posted By: baalamb

They're all impacted. The bottom ones are only partially erupted though, and that's cause for the breaking them up. I think the part I'm most scared about is the noises!!! And seeing scary looking tools come towards my face. But the logical part of my brain KNOWS it's not going to be as bad as I'm feeling it's going to be. And I'm forgetting that I'm actually NOT going to feel this pain that I'm thinking of.

I've read that the earlier you get them out, the less problems they'll cause later on down the track.

Thanks for your post. That actually makes me feel a lot calmer... for now!! Hehe

I haven't been to a dentist in 4 years coz I am too scared, I am a giant chicken.

I only had one wisdom tooth but it impacted and I had it removed under GA thanks to Southern Cross. Insurance or no insurance there is no way on God's green earth that I would have had it done without the GA!

Yeah I will take my mp3 player, but really, I should just get over it haha. How effective is oral sedation? Please answer me honestly! I've heard so many differing stories!

Emma - before I had a tooth ache in May, I hadn't been to the dentist in at least 8 years! I'm petrified. I can't even put my finger on what it is that I'm scared of. I think it's the noises and the smells and the scary looking tools but technology is so much better than when I last went. I told my dentist I was terrified and he was really gentle, I felt like a fool for being so scared and wish I'd been earlier! Mind you, I didn't need any other work other than these teeth pulled out!!!

That's how mine came out, and I was a complete mess beforehand - hysterical in the waiting room. It was so embarrassing! The surgeon was reluctant to start until he was convinced I was consenting to the procedure but it's hard to convince someone of that when you're sobbing violently! Ha ha. Ah, I'd say if it's not going to send you broke, I'd recommend the GA. I had IV sedation (ask if they offer this - explain that it's not just pain you want meds for it's the anxiety of it all) which was really good stuff, but if I did it again, I'd opt to be out.

I had all 4 out about 7yrs ago and I was under GA, couldn't cope with the thought of just a local.

i would recommend taking arnica before and as soon as possible after. I did and had very little bruising

I'd push for IV sedation. Oral knocked me off a little - like having 4 wines - but IV midazolam is wonderful for deleting your memory and pain. If he doesn't offer it, IMO, it'd be worth looking for someone who does, esp if you're rather anxious about getting them out.

There may also be something around definitions - is he a maxillofacial surgeon (dentist and doctor in one - imagine that student loan) or oral surgeon (dentist with extra experience, I think). I think he's have to be a maxfax one to do IV sedation (wouldn't want dentists putting IVs in my arms) - someone else might know.

I had one out under local (thought it was going to be a filling). It wasn't imparcted, and honestly, was fine. No pain at all really, and came straight out. But if they are all imparcted, then that may change things.

I've had teeth out with locals and although not painful I hate all the noises and tools too! The last tooth I had out a few years ago the dentist recommended I have it done under IV sedation as it wasn't going to be an easy one. It was the best thing without having to go under general.
The last thing I remember was telling them not to let me fall off the table. I can vaguely remember DH driving me home and I was giving him directions on how to get to the chemist to pick up the prescription (control freak even when drugged). I slept it off at home and can't remember any of the procedure. I found it a great experience, although glad I can't remember any of it as I probably said/did some weird stuff while in la la land.

That's exactly what he told me oral sedation was like. I think I want more of a relaxer than that! I'll ring them in the morning and if they can't offer IV, then I'm back to deciding if oral is going to be enough, or if I should go under. We have the money to do it, but I just don't know if I want to spend that much on removing my teeth!

I had terrible tooth ache when I was 7 weeks pregnant with Harry. Took panadol for about a week and it just didn't get any better til one day it was so unbearable. Only place I could get in was the After Hours dentist in Christchurch. So went on in that night and he had a look and told me it was my wisdom tooth.

He then proceeded to tell me that I would need both the top and bottom one out. So took an xray (after I freaked out about being pregnant and having to have an xray!) and said they weren't impacted at all. I said "okay thanks, should I ring tomorrow and get another appointment? to which he said "no, I'll do it now". Arghhhhhhhh!! This is why I hadn't been to the dentist for 7 years!!

So after half an hour I headed on home with 2 wisdom teeth sitting on the front seat and a wallet that was $300 lighter!! If I had known for one second that was going to happen I would NEVER have gone but it really wasn't that bad in the end and I am petrified of the dentist!

I hope you can figure out what to do. The whole dentist thing really does scare me and I really have to make an appointment for a checkup one of these days! Good luck

I have had all 4 of wisdom teeth out but have doen them one at a time as they are annoying me and have only ever done local. The last one was 4 weeks ago. Apparently top ones are always less sore then the bottom ones. My bottom ones were impacted and I was a wreck with the 1st one but ot was easy.

I have doen them all just with a local and last time needed no pain relief at all afterwards. My 3rd one i was a mess before hand as it was a bottom, impacted one and I was 22 weeks preg so couldn't take anything but panadol afterwards and I was sweet.

You will feel so proud of yourself after you have done it!

Sorry , meant to answer your post re oral sedation earlier but had certain child to attend to

The last practise i worked at they used oral and Iv sedation , the patients that used them were one who were nervous of the dentist and they loved it,your not completly out like GA but your nearly as out to it....put it this way , your too relaxed to care whats going on , but still not too gone that you wont understand when we say "open wider" ...you will just do it in a very relaxed way .

Have you had general anesthetic before ? people think that because you are out to it , its the easiest thing , but sometimes complications will occur so make sure you think carefully about it and don't rush your decision.

All in all while it seems and sounds scary either way , whether you have GA or oral/iv sedation you wont be too bothered, in fact the one more likely to be sore and uncomfortable is the DA (assistant) we are the ones who get to stand there with the suction while our arms get sore
And if were REALLY lucky the patient will decide to keep the extracted teeth and we get to clean them ...yaaaayyy....
I love my job .....

lol Baalamb totally understand your concerns too. I am an absolute chicken when it comes to dentists.

I had all 4 of mine taken out about 4 years ago and my oral surgen was great. I had a local and Sedation. Although I dont remember how he gave it to me. I think it was IV as I dont remember taking any pills. Having said that, I dont remember anything to do with the procedure either . Apparently I asked the same questions about 3 - 4 times in recovery because I dont remember his answer lol.

So I guess what Im saying is, after a local and sedation I dont remember any thing of the procedure

Hehe, I actually did say to my cousin that I'd rather have another c-section than go through this! But I'm being silly. I KNOW it's not going to be as bad as I think it is. The mind plays such mean tricks. I have to remind myself there are people in worse positions than myself and hate this sort of thing a LOT more than me. I'm just being precious.

Can i join the precious brigade too?

Mine are trying to come thru but are being terribly painful, one of mine at the top has pushed my very back tooth sidways and that now has a whole in it and the wisdom tooth has just cut thru the gum - again, facing nearly sideways - i KNOW i need them both out, and want the others out too even though they haven't cut thru - they give me heaps of pain. I think sometimes they are the reason i am such a grump.

The sideways thing means they're impacted, Janine not nice is it? I was REAL grumpy the other week. It's only just recently (within the last month) that they've given me pain. I just wish wish wish that when I had the initial pains (they weren't all that bad!) when I was a teenager, that I did something about it then. However, can't dwell on what I can't change!

And those ones that aren't cut through yet, they'd be able to see on x-rays whether they can come out at the same time.

Will you be able to get them done through the hospital? That'd be cheaper for you. We were denied hospital care because we don't have a Community Services card which is crap because we're not swimming in money . But maybe because you work there, you'd get in?

oh no, i haven't needed anything done (yet, touch wood) but im worried that when i will , i'll not be satisfied with the other lady suctioning on me that i'll grab the suction and do it myself ...
Does your dentist do RT in 2 stages or 3? the one i work for now does it in 2 stages, the one before did it in 3 stages , interesting how different they are in their ways of working , newer grad compared to an older dentist ...

Ergh, Caitlynsmygirl - at least you cleaned them. Mine just gave them back to me with flesh and blood still attached. Needless to say, they went in the bin pretty quickly.

Quick tip - if you have sedation and go home feeling really good (convinced you're completely sober), don't go onto your work email and send emails about things. You have to a bit of explaining the next week

Haha Flissty that's hilarious. Will have to remember that one.

I have had 3 wisdom teeth removed, one at about 14 weeks pregnant last year. The first two were removed by an oral surgeon under Midazolam, I have absolutely no recollection of the procedure other than being ushered out of the chair afterwards, and into the waiting room and then dribbling down a cup of tea. Last year, I had one removed under local, the dentist just yanked it out in about 5 seconds and it wasn't painful at all, just felt some pressure.

Good luck, you will be absolutely fine!

Go IV sedation!  Thats what I had and I dont remember anything...well weird snippets like them telling me its over and me telling them they havent even started.  Mine were impacted, lying sideways, wrapped around nerves..you name it.  I was told to expect swelling after (like a grapefruit either side of my face).  I got none!!!!  No pain or discomfort after either.  Just remember being really tired that night.....even though I thought I could do anything.  Made my flatmates get out a video (it was a while back) and then fell asleep before it was put on.

I had a really vivid nightmare about the whole procedure last night, so the actual thing won't be as bad as my dream, surely!!!

Hrmmm... sorry, I haven't read posts so may be repeating. (Read first page so understand anxiety!)

I had my bottom ones out under GA covered by Southern Cross about 5 years ago.

Mine were feckeroonied. Lying horizontal and threatening to wreak havoc with my teeth. And there was no way I was letting that happen after I went through the pain of having braces!

So I was under and don't remember the procedure. I do remember that I looked like a chipmunk for a few weeks afterward and had some pretty serious bruising along my jaw line. Hawt.

Ewww and syringing out the holes to get rid of food. Man some gross stuff came out of there. Word of advice: don't eat brocolli.

chick, from someone who watches the procedure nearly every day , i can honestly tell you it sounds scarier than it is , you'll be fine, just do what the dentist tells you after, eg salt rinses, no spitting for the rest of the day etc and you'll be fine, expect some discomfort, the wisdom teeth are big teeth afterall.

You guys are hilarious with your "sedation" memories.
I used to take a rather strong anti anxiety tablet when I first started flying and I remember taking two in one day (one each way) and the flight home must have been memorable for the poor man sitting next to me as I can vaguely remember asking him if we were heading the right way (I seriously thought the pilots were heading south not north - it was dark what would I know?) and then waking myself up with my own snoring. Needless to say I didn't worry about that flight!
I got these strange flashbacks the next day and promptly changed the doseage.
Sorry a bit off topic.

Oh yeah, good point nikki - make sure you get a wee syringe from the surgeon to syringe the food out of your holes. I didn't get one and tried to dig the food out with cotton buds - god knows how I didn't push it down further and get an infection.

Hi I had 3 taken out and a filling done in one session - I was dribbling a bit at the end but that was all. I have a great dentist only had some local and he said it was the way they were taken out so recovery was brill and I could have gone to work the next day. Do the dentists instructions eg salt rinses and you will be fine. All up it cost about $800 because my dentist knew that I didnt have any health insurance - he rocked. I didnt need IV or anything. They were the best thing I ever got done because I had been in severe pain.

Well. That whole experience was really traumatic the sedation did bugger all to relax me, just made me wobbly on my feet, and I felt like I was almost choking a couple of times. I cried after it was all over.

I've had a look in my mouth and man there are some big holes there, but I've also notices a long bloody thing coming from the hole on one of the top ones. Kelly, is this normal? To me it looks like the clot, but its like a few cm's long and obviously not meant to be hanging out of my tooth do you think I should give them a call back and ask what it is and what to do about it? Or is it completely normal? I'm not going to touch it or pull it or anything, but just wondered why it was from one hole and not any of the others. Has the stitch not held or something?

Oh gosh, sorry it didn't go so well, yikes!    hope you recover nice and fast!

ETA: I remember when I had mine done there was a bit of loose skin or something coming out for a while, kept feeling it with my tongue and it felt kinda "flappy", sorry if thats gross but I heard its quite common. It goes away.

Awww Kirst. Sucky!!! I don't recall stuff hanging but do remember the holes being damn big and the clot being a bit gross to touch. Try not to stick your tongue in it - hurts like a mo' fo'!

Call them if you are worried sweet. Do you have a follow up appt? I recall having to get appts to get the sites checked out.

Oh, sorry it didn't go so well. But it's now OVER!

I would give them a ring - always better to ask, and it's more civilised to ring now than in 6 hours, when you will probably become even more worried about it (just speaking from my experience of never calling my MW till its really late and I've got myself all worked up!).

The clotty thing came away. Not overly worried because there's still a clot in it, the bleeding's starting to subside now (it's so gross!). The anaesthetic is starting to wear away now and the pain is kicking in slowly but surely! Can't have another Voltaren for half an hour.

Nikki - yeah I have a follow up in a week to get the stitches removed shudder...!

Sorry to hear it didn't go that well. At least you don't have to worry about the thought of having it done now. Hope the pain meds do their thing!!

sorry to hear it didnt go well chick :-(

that thing coming out your mouth does not sound good,i would ring them tomorrow and describe it and say you want them to have an urgent look at it, it may just be some loose skin ( ) or worse case scenario, one of the stiches hasnt held and the clot has come out, which we need to fix straight away , that can cause dry socket , and you DO not want that !

ring them tomorrow first thing chick
