Thanks Ladies for all of your lovely comments for our dear wee Matilda. "Tilly" is doing well, still very choked up with mucus (poor thing), but feeding well & is just a little bundle of joy. Didn't have such a brilliant night, because of the mucus problem - but she has been great today.

Much more relaxed with breastfeeding second time around - really struggled with Georgia & ended up comping from 2.5 weeks. Matilda is quite good at latching on & I am a bit more confident - so things working out so far However, very sore uterus pains & very sore nipples!!

Hope all you Ladies are doing well.

Midwife came today, Chiara has put on 180g since we left Birthcare on Sun So obviously she is getting plenty even tho she is having super-quick feeds, I think she's just an efficient feeder and I'm a good cow. She's only having one side per feed but it seems to be plenty.

She was quite unsettled with wind last night so I've put the cot up and it seems to have done the trick. Mind you, the last two nights in a row she's been a mission between about 9pm and midnight so will be interesting to see how she goes tonight.

Wow Emma, sounds like Chiara is really doing well Sounds like you are a well oiled feeding machine!! I'm not so lucky, having to feed 10-15mins each side then comp with 50mls of formula. Tilly's put on 4 oz since birth now.

Tilly seems to be the same between 9am and midnight - little monkeys! Plus she's turned into a little guts - demanding more feeding, especially at night!

Bugger about having to top up Kimmies, hopefully your supply will settle soon. I am enjoying having a much more successful breastfeeding experience this time round, the gremlins were a nightmare to feed so having a baby that latches and feeds well is awesome.

Chiara did 5 hours sleep last night! She woke around 8.30pm and was awake till about 10.30pm but she was happy, cluster fed in between laying in her rocker and playing with her daddy. Then she was up again at about 1.20am for a feed, then back down and she slept until 6.30am! Would have made a great sleep for me if I hadn't had to get up to a grumpy gremlin at 4am.

We were out all day today and she slept well in the buggy/capsule which is good - so much more portable than the gremlins were, they would have screamed the whole time at her age! She did have a big spill after her morning feed but I think it was just coz she made a guts of herself coz she's been OK with the last two feeds. I am expecting she'll prob be awake for a few hours this evening again, she seems to be more awake in the late evening and then sleepy all day.

How are the rest of the July babies going?

Beautiful pix of wee Chiara Emma!! What a cutie Wow, she had an excellent night last night! I wish Tilly would sleep like that! She is still feeding every three hours or so during the night. We are still having trouble with her spilling - don't know if that is the result of overfeeding - since we are comping with formula - or perhaps she is intolerant to her formula??

Parenthood certainly kicked our ass tonight - didn't get to have our cold & burnt dinner till 9pm...Georgia was teething and absolutely miserable...Matilda spilled all over herself while sitting in the bouncinette, then as I was changing all her clothes & nappies she decided to do a big poo, then spill up more & then wee everywhere! Then had to bath her... put Georgia to bed... Michael and I were shattered once we got to sit down & eat dinner. It certainly made a difference having my Mum here... we got to quite like the 3adult to 2 baby ratio! Emma - I take my hat off to you - I don't know quite how you do it!
Here is some pix of Matilda having her bath...

Believe me Kimmies I am terrified about what will happen when mum goes home! I'm outnumbered by children!
Chiara is quite spilly too, yesterday she brought up a whole feed at one point, and then small spills with all her other feeds. I'm hoping it's just spilling and not a sign that she's going to be a refluxer like the gremlins - must say that the big sour milk spill yesterday brought back memories
She did 4 hours overnight last night but was a bit of a mission to settle after her 6am feed, I was just getting her back to sleep when Maya came in and that woke her up and we had to start all over again.

Do you have a nanny or someone who can help you? My friend has a nanny (who is very reasonably priced) with her on Mondays and Thursdays...I am very much considering employing her in our house from time to time!

Sorry to hear Chiara is quite spilly too. How did you cope with the Gremlins reflux? I have been looking into reflux on the internet - I need to talk to my midwife about it when she comes on Monday to check in on Matilda again. Do you need to get it confirmed by a doctor?? It was interesting that she had a 100ml bottle after midnight (since my supply was low) and she didn't spill at all... but she spilled after breastfeeding off me? Could it be my milk?

-------------

Posted By: Maya
Date Posted: 18 July 2008 at 11:16am
Yep, I have a nanny 4 days a week so am lucky in that respect, I'm going to need her just to be able to get out of the house!

I didn't cope well at all with the gremlins reflux! Theirs turned out to be allergy related, they were reacting to something in my breastmilk and once we weaned them onto Neocate (allergy formula) at 3 mths the reflux stopped. It was awful while it lasted tho, poor things screamed 24-7 and after every feed they'd have a little cough then projectile the whole feed across the room. Maya learnt to call muslin cloths 'spew cloths' coz we couldn't feed them without a supply of cloths on hand.

If Matilda is coping with the formula it's unlikely to be your breastmilk, coz formula is generally worse reflux-wise. It could be a time of the day thing ie. she's more spilly in the mornings when you have more milk or your milk flow is faster, or in the evenings when she has to work harder coz your supply is lower and she takes in more wind. It's all trial and error.

We had Mercedes seen by a paediatrician, he observed her feeding and diagnosed the reflux but she also ended up in hospital twice when she stopped breathing and they think that was reflux related. She was on meds for it,but we never medicated Sienna, I kept trying to convince myself that she didn't have it coz the thought of TWO refluxers was too overwhelming.

Definitely worth talking to your doc about it tho. If Chiara does have reflux I think I'm gonna try and avoid meds if I can, will have to see how we go tho. Atm the spilling doesn't seem to be upsetting her which is a good sign.

Hi July mums

Beautiful pics Emma and Kimmie.
Your babies look like little darlings. Logan is cute too. Went to the shops today and noticed I had spilt some of my breakfast on my dress as I got out the car - turns out it doesn't matter - nobody looks at you when you have a newborn! They only have eyes for the little mite:)
Hopefully I will get him into a slightly more convenient sleeping pattern but I am quickly realising its his rules really!!
Congrats to the mums with more than one child too - I often wonder how you do it!!

Hi ho.

Cheers, glad you ladies liked the pix. Tilly just loves her bath so much - compared to her sister Georgia at that age...who just used to scream her little lungs out!

Hayzie - you are so right...newborns are people magnets!

Thanks Emma for your comments on reflux - I found them very helpful. The good thing is that Tilly doesn't seem to be fussed about the spilling...it would be much worse if it really upset her. You'll be pleased to hear that her spilling has been much less today - she's only bought up a little bit - and that has to be expected from all babies.

hey all

Well have had the most hectec week. So first chance I've had but you all know how it is.

Our beautiful Ryan William was born on Monday 14th July at 4.39pm via waterbirth after a 10hr 45 min labour. head cir. 34cm and weighing in at 3250g, 7lb 2 1/2 oz.. Oh and completely drug free. Just thought i'd mention that. I had the best suport team Dh was so wonderful fell apart in a few places (having you cervix streched for 8 - 10cm) ouchy. and my mum was so good to i couldn't have lasted without her.

Having real problems with feeding as our lil ryan is stil yet to latch on properly. We are expressing and feeding through a measuring cup.

I've been thinking of flissty sounds like she's still waiting for her lil bundle.

Have a few photo's just to show off his thick head of hair and how bad you look after labour.

And the lovely Dh changing his first nappy.

And this is the wee dude just awake ready to go home.

Welcome to the world Ryan!

Yay for Tilly being less spilly Kimmies, long may it continue!

I just had my first go at expressing for Chiara, man it brought back memories Just getting the breast pump out of the box and sterilising it gave me flashbacks. But I figured it was as good a time as any to start coz I had just finished feeding Chiara and I still felt really full. Managed to get 25ml off one side and 70ml off the other so enough for a feed for her. Have put it in the freezer, I want to start giving her one bottle of EBM a day in a week or two so that she gets used to taking the bottle coz we never did that with Maya and she refused point blank to take a bottle which was a PITA when I needed to leave her anywhere.

Oooh yes please if you have one spare Susieq! I have to go out today and try and find a couple of copies coz we get it delivered but I want a copy to stick in a card for the m/w as well.

My mum left this morning And Willie is at his mates place so this is officially day one of me on my own with four kids! So far we are doing OK, we've all had breakfast, Chiara has been fed and put back to bed and I've unloaded the dishwasher and sorted the washing. Tomorrow will be the real challenge tho, we all have to get out the door by 8.30am to get Maya to school.

I have milk for Africa after Chiara's big cluster feed session last night then her big 5 hour sleep, it was hard to latch her when she woke at 4am to feed coz I was so engorged and the milk was gushing everywhere so I fed her off one side and expressed the other. Managed to get 100ml in five mins so obviously she is getting plenty from her 5 min power feeds. Will be interesting to see how her weight is when the m/w comes on Wed.

Sorry to hear your Mum has left Emma. Hope you are doing OK. My Mum is still ringing me twice a day, skyping & texting me! In fact, she just rang my cell phone to check on us & woke Michael, because I had my phone on charge by the bed - he was asleep when it rang - not a happy chappy now!
You sound like a total milk machine! Wish I had your supply...mine barely even leak - have just started to have using breast pads.

I survived my first morning school run, I made Maya pack her bag last night and I made her lunch so it was all ready to go, then got up this morning at 7.30am, dressed the gremlins, made them all breakfast, had a shower, did Maya's hair, fed Chiara and got out the door by 8.33am. Then I even braved multiple birth club playgroup - I must be insane! But Chiara was really good, I fed her there and she napped in her capsule while I played with the gremlins. I wasn't planning to go but the morning was going so smoothly and they love playgroup so we went.

Check out these blue eyes, I know they'll change like the gremlins did, but atm they are stunning!

Wow, ladies - no wonder you feel like cows! lol Sounds like you have lots of milk! Mine are pathetic....drip drip drip - hardly even soaks my breast pads. Though do agree with you Emma .. my flow must be better now if I am having to use the pads. I am still taking two of those pills a day though to stimulate the flow.

Emma - love your pix of Chiara - what a cute little blue eyed angel!

Sounds like you were a powerhouse this morning & organised to the max!
This morning was my first official time as Mum to 2 under 14 mths - without any other adult help! Michael was back to work at school today - was very nervous about it! Matilda cluster fed till late last night, she went down just before 1am, then she fed again at 4 but wouldn't go down and settle till just before 6am! Poor Michael was really tired going to work this morning. Then both Georgia & Matilda woke at 8.30am - brilliant timing eh! Had to very quickly feed Tilly, then get up an upset Georgia to change, feed, so I could get back to Tilly who needed more feeding! Then the midwife turned up, with a student midwife, then the fridge repairman turned up (cos our fridge was playing up after power surges all last night ). Damn weather during the weekend meant that I had a massive backlog of washing to deal with & finally got to have my shower at 3pm! No rest time either as when one was down for a sleep, the other one needed feeding! Need to work on our routines! Don't know how you do it Emma - i was so close to tears today!

What a day Kimmies! I bet you were glad to see the end of it! Sounds manic! I'm lucky that the gremlins are old enough to be a little patient, this morning all 4 of them woke at the same time but they were happy to cruise around while I fed Chiara and then Maya made them some toast (altho I had to supervise!). Got her to school again altho not so organised, am still in my PJ's!

Yeah it was pretty crazy! Much better today - and even found time to back American chocolate brownies in the morning. Michael says I am turning into Nigella Lawson...a domestic goddess It has been pouring with rain here today - so not much else to do than care for the babies, feed the babies, change the babies, play with the babies & bake!

Can't imagine what it is like when all 4 of yours wake at the same time! You must be very organised to get Maya to school on time with all the others to deal with as well. Totally know what it is like to be in your PJ's late...sometimes I'm in mine till lunchtime! I managed to get in a shower before Georgia woke this morning, after I had fed Matilda.

Georgia woke up crying about 5am ish this morning - she must have had a bad dream or something. She is in a much more delightful mood today....still quite clingy - but just wants to come and hang with me on the couch & give me cuddles. Lovely Mummy & daughter time. Tilly needs to be fed now, so better go wake her

you guys with more than one are amazing! even tho you may not think so, you are!

I think its bad enough having to feed and change Zechariah and then get out the door by 9:30am for his mainly music group! ..that sounds soo easy compared to what you guys have to organise!

all the baby photos are soo cute!!

Question re feeding - how often/much are people feeding. We've been doing one boob then a play time of an hour or so, then the other boob or EBM (20ml ish), then sleep. It means that the whole process plus a sleep is 4 hours, and he's only being fed about 6 times a day. We're now cutting down the play time to 20 min. I can express off about 40 mls. Does that sound about right for him being 6 days. My milk is starting to come in, but isn't hugely there.

LOL Flissty, I need to take LESS photos of Chiara, I don't have enough of the three big ones, esp Maya as a new baby (heaps of them as toddlers and older tho) so am going a bit overboard this time!

What you are doing sounds like what I did with Maya - feed one side, nappy change, play, other side then back to bed, and then I'd start the next feed on the other side. I'd wake her 3 hourly to feed, 3 hours from start of feed so say 7am, then 10am, 1pm and so on. She'd be up an hour at a time - 20 min feed, 20 min play, 20 min feed, bed - so then she'd have 2 hours sleep between feeds. As she got older the play time got longer.

Chiara is a law unto herself. She only takes one side per feed coz I have enough milk to sustain that so she gets up, I give her one side, change her and then put her back on the same side so she gets enough hind milk. She doesn't have play time at every feed coz she is too sleepy, she has a big awake time in the evening and a smaller awake time in the morning, then about 5-10 mins awake time during her other day feeds, and none for night feeds.

And I won't confuse you by telling you what the gremlins did coz they were pretty much a how-not-to manual of parenting...

Lol to your last comment Emma....can only imagine how hectic it was with a feeing schedule for your gremlins!

My midwife advised me that in the early days babies only need to be up for maximum of an hour - get up, change, feed, burp & put back to bed. Matilda is having a feed every 3 hrs or so, 6 feeds a day and is generally up for an hour - though less for the middle of the night feed..... although - when she wants to cluster feed - the whole organised routine goes straight out the window!! Matilda does seem to be a lot more alert now & is taking huge notice of the red, black and white cushions on our couch - which makes sense - as these three colours are excellent for babies to practice focussing on. I've been putting her in her bouncinette for a couple of times a day for a wee while just to chill out and look around - though have to be very on my game with a 14 mth old toddler running around the room too, wrecking havoc!

hi ladies

congrats everyone love all the pics! all such beautiful babies

we are home after 1 night in hospital and 4 nights at birthcare, Jayden was bf for 2-3 hours at a time!!!! and I ended up getting diaorea (Tmi) so really didnt and couldnt sit there for that long feeding so I switched to expressing which has been so good! one night at birthcare we were up most of the night with him screaming as he was so hungry but wouldnt latch, now hes like a new bubs on the bottle! he feeds roughly every 3 hours so im expressing about then although just expressed after 4 hours and got 140ml! milk machine! I also woke up in the night to pools of milk! think im going to bed tonight with a bra and a million breast pads!

DH has now got the diaorea and I now have a throat infection thing coming on- think im just so run down after a long labour (will post that in the pregnancy thread) so im on expressing and DH on feeding tonight so hopefully can get some much needed sleep!

mw came today and was lovely, shes coming back tomorrow to weigh him

Jayden also sleeps most of the time, we feed half a bottle change nappy and finish bottle off wind him etc then hes asleep although he seems to be more awake at night the monkey!

anyway off to bed now will post some pics tomorrow

Kye, i need some of your milk. We're having to top up with formula and a bottle at night which I really don't want to do but I can't fill him up on my own. He is a pain at night, wakin up for 3 hours at a time (hence my one handed typing).

DH is really struggling cos he's so tired and doesn't feel like he's connecting with Daniel which I'm finding really hard - he gets really frustrated with him which both he and I hate. I don't know what to do about it clos I can't do all the feeds and settlling on my own but I don't want him getting pissed off with Daniel. DH is worried he's getting PND - we always thought I would - and it's just really sad he doesn't get to enjoy his time with his wee boy

Ta - thanks ladies! Tilly is cute when she's not crying!!

Man - the weather is so horrid here today - going to be marooned inside all damn day me thinks. Thank goodness I took the girls into town for a walk yesterday

Flissty - I am so sorry to hear of your problems with DH and his bonding with Bub's. It certainly can be very difficult for the Father in the beginning - especially as the Mother has so much one on one contact with the baby with feeding and all. Does your DH change Daniel and give him his bath? They are good things for him to do. Michael gives our girls their bath each day and he gets up to change Tilly in the middle of the night too, then brings her back to me to be fed. Because both of my girls had to be breastfed & bottle fed (with formula comps), Michael luckily gets to feed the girls some bottles too. Could you perhaps express some milk and bottle it so DH could feed Daniel sometimes??
Unfortunately, Post natal depression is a very real occurrence for men as well - we usually think it is women who always suffer & we forget the men in our lives too. I think OHbaby! magazine did a recent article on it didn't they? Might be good for you to get a hold of one and read Hope it all works out sweetie

Tilly is soooo cute!

Kye hope you start to feel better soon and your DH! I had the opposite of diarhea when I had Zechariah then a week later I finally let it all out! It was the awful, I think it was the codiene that caused all that. Yay for having heaps of milk! I also wear a bra to bed every night, otherwise I end up sleeping in a wet patch which is not the nicest feeling. I remember thinking I cant wait to get my body back after having Zechariah, but my body is still very much controlled by Zech, even tho he is now on the outside! lol
Im finding I cant wear my fav clothes as they are to awkward to BF in so I think I wil have to go shopping soon for some new BF friendly clothes..

Flissty hang in there- you have had it very tough! and it might just take some time for your DH to come round. I also had afew issues with my DH, but with him it seems to come and go, some days he doesnt wanna know he has a baby and others he is fine. But big hugs to you! and thinking of you..

Zechariah is now 6 weeks so I am really hoping he starts to settle into some sort of routine now, last night was terrible, he woke every 2hours for a feed, must be a growth spurt.
Also, anyone else using cloth nappies? I have just started using them and they are great during the day, altho they dont hold the wee in as much as sposies. Which is a bit of a downer but otherwise they work well.

Hugs Flissty! Try not to get too stressed over the bonding thing, it really is early days and you and DH are both still recovering from a pretty traumatic experience! Kimmies is right, we did an article on PND in men in the last OHbaby! mag, if you haven't got a copy I can bring you one when we catch up this week. I like Kimmies ideas for including DH in Daniel's care too. Bonding is a funny thing, sometimes it's instant, sometimes it takes a long time. I bonded immediately with Maya and Chiara, but for various reasons the gremlins were 8 months old before I even started to LIKE them, let alone bond with them, up until that point I just resented them for taking up so much of my life even tho we planned to have them! But it did happen eventually, it just took time.

Hugs to you yoo Kye, I've had the throat infection this week as well but antibiotics seem to have knocked it on the head. Well done with the expressing, I express fed the gremlins from 1 week till they were 10 weeks old, it was such a mission!

Thomasina - we do cloth! Gremlins are in cloth during the day and sposies at night. I have a whole stash of cloth for Chiara but I got given a box of NB size Huggies so am trying to use them up before she outgrows them then will start with the cloth. What sort of nappies are you using? I have a mixed stash, mostly pockets but also some prefolds and AIO's.

Emma and Kye - sorry to hear you've both been ill - hope you feel better soon

Thomasina - i totally agree with you about our babies still ruling our bodies after they've been born. It is a total struggle to find good breastfeeding clothes - especially clothes for winter!! Last year with Georgia I bought a lovely black breastfeeding t-shirt from Egg Materntiy (but expensive)...but it is too cold to be wearing t-shirts at the moment, even with a jersey over the top. I find I get quite cold and shivery when feeding. I went into pumpkin patch & got an excellent white long sleeved top with cross over v-neck (on sale for $15!!). I also bought a couple of good merino cardigans & v neck jerseys for feeding too. Emma - a search & article on good breastfeeding attire for winter wouldn't go a miss on your site or in the magazine!! I did notice OHbaby! had a couple of pages of breastfeeding tops. I find that most stuff is online - and I would rather look at it first in the shop and try it on - plus it is the excitement of getting out of the house & shopping! lol..

I will pass that on Kimmies!

I wear the JK maternity singlets I bought when I was preg with the gremlins under my tops and then pull my tops up and my singlet down so it still covers my back and I don't get a chill across it. At night I feed in bed.

DH is feeling a bit better today I think - I sent him to the pub with his mate for some time out. It's not that he doesn't want to do things with Daniel - he does all of the bathing, lots of changing etc; it's just that he's knackered. He had a good talk to my sister today and I think he's feeling a bit better that maybe it's just sleep deprivation. He's such a good Dad but doesn't have confidence in himself,.

I'm finding it depressing getting back into clothes - big jelly tummy! All my pre-preggy clothes are fairly tight so not that flattering. Oh well, if I have a newborn with me, I figure I'll get away with the spare tyre or 4!

Kimmies - Tilly is Gorgeous!! the photos are beautiful i need to figure out how to take good ones like that of Cruz!!

Sounds like alot of these July babies like to be awake alot at night!! if only the would just switch it around and have their wake time in the day and sleep all night!!!

I havent been brave enough to try on my pre pregnancy jeans yet, but am hoping they will fit as the swelling in my legs has gone back to normal finally so fingers crossed!!
Went to go shopping for some new clothes today , i need stuff thats more suitable for breastfeeding but only managed about 10 min before i was so sore i had to sit down and give up!!
Luckily for me it was cold here today so i had a thick jacket on because when i took it off once i was home i was soaking all down my front , where the breast pad hadnt worked , would have been SO embarrasing if id been in town without something to cover it up!

That happened to me in WINZ when Maya was 6 days old Kallie They made me come in for a review appt even tho I'd just had a baby and Maya was hungry and screamed the place down but I wasn't confident to feed in public and my milk let down all over the place and soaked me, I was so embarrassed. These days it worries me less, the more kids you have the less dignity you hang on to!

Re: the milk let down ....Ohhhhh ladies! Poor you! I've never had happen to me...I just don't seem to make enough. I find that mine only tingle when it's getting time for me to feed or I hear Matilda crying.

Thanks Kallie re: photos. I take way too many photos...it is in my blood....my father's a photographer/journalist, my sister has a photography arts degree & I was trained in TV/Film Production - cameras are a staple in our house...I was born with one in my hand Georgia is so used to me shoving a camera in her face, she turns and smiles for me!! ....lol.....

If you need some good pointers - page 40 in the Little Treasures Magazine (issue April/May - if you can get a hold of it from someone...) has a good "bright ideas' article on "Capture the moment" tips for DIY photography of newborns. There are some excellent tips in there.
Sorry Emma - not trying to plug another baby magazine......lol.... still think that OHbaby! far out does any other baby magazine on the stand

Loving the talk about clothes.....I have a whole wardrobe pre: Georgia that I will hopefully fit back into one day.... one day..... although was pleasantly amazed that I got straight back into my pre pregnancy jeans only 5 days after birth! Couldn't believe it. Now wondering if I had stretched them out a bit - cos I did wear them till about 35weeks in pregnancy with an extender band.
