I have a baby shower to go to in a couple of weeks and on the invite it says we need to bring an item that was popular (and something that we laugh about now) in our day. It will be put in a capsule with a little story about it for her daughter when she turns 21. Any Ideas? I wanted to do the Purple Goana but someone has nabbed that. Also, it kinda needs to be able to be bought now (unless someone has the item and no longer want it!)
Thanks.....now lets remenis(sp?)

we did something similar - my family back home bought Caitlin retro toys (like the Noddy doll Debs loves in Caitlin's room ).
Perhaps a Tupperware shape sorter? those have been around forever!
I only know about old UK stuff, doubt that would be anymore of a help

I was born in 1982..
What about care bears, popples (don't know if you can still get them), those snap bracelets, my little ponies, muppets (just trying to think what we used to watch on TV...) fraggles, smurfs ....
Did you used to watch What Now? Remember that guy (was it Danny??) who used to make stuff each week? He always used dowel (sp) and his trusty "snips"

Ah yes! I loved my tupperware shape sorter!
Also, if you had the time (and the inclination) .. do you remember those wooden boards with pegs in and you had a cut out wooden doll (like a paper doll but wood) which "climbed" down the pegs? ... My grandad made mine for me.

What about making a mixed cd of all the one hit wonders of the late eighties/early nineties when we were teens:
- Vanilla Ice
- MC hammer
- Sir mix-a-lot
- New kids on the block
- Teenage mutant ninja turtle theme music
Ok, can't think of anymore right now but maybe someone else can add to the list.

OK, still really long but here goes...
You Know You Grew Up In The 80's if:
1. You used to buy cassette singles… and still have some stashed somewhere…
2. You can sing the rap to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and can do the Carlton
3. Girls wore biker shorts under their skirts and felt stylishly sexy.
4. You yearned to be a member of the Baby-sitters club and tried to start a club of your own.
5. You owned those lil' Strawberry Shortcake pals scented dolls (or your sister did).
6. You know that "WOAH" comes from Joey on Blossom
7. Two words: Hammer Pants
8. You watched "Fraggle Rock".
9. You had plastic streamers on your handle bars... and spokey-dokies or playing cards on your spokes for that incredible sound effect
10. You watched "Duck Tales" (Woo ooh!)
11. It was actually worth getting up early on a Saturday to watch cartoons.
12. You (your sister, cousins) wore a ponytail on the side of your head.
13. You saw the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the big screen..and still know the turtles names.
14. You wore stonewashed jean jackets and were proud of it.
15. L.A. Gear....need I say more?
16. You remember reading Tales of a fourth grade nothing and all the other Judy Blume books.
17. You know the profound meaning of "WAX ON, WAX OFF"
18. You wanted to be a Goonie.
19. You ever wore fluorescent clothing. (some of us...head-to-toe)
20. You can remember what Michael Jackson looked like before his nose fell off and his cheeks shifted.
21. You have ever pondered why Smurfette was the only female smurf.
22. You remember the CRAZE, then the BANNING of slap bracelets.
23. You still get the urge to say "NOT" after every sentence.
24. You remember Hypercolor t-shirts.
25. You thought your childhood friends would never leave because you exchanged handmade friendship bracelets.
26. After you saw Pee-Wee's Big Adventure you kept saying "I know you are, but what am I?"
27. You remember going to the skating rink before there were inline skates.
28. You ever got seriously injured on a Slip and Slide.
29. You have ever played with a Skip-It or Elastix
30. You've gone through this nodding your head in agreement.
31. Don't worry, be happy
32. You wore like, EIGHT pairs of socks over tights with high top Reeboks.
33. You wore socks scrunched down
34. You remember watching Rainbow Bright and & My Little Pony Tales
35. You remember Alf, the lil furry brown alien from Melmac.
36. You remember New Kids on the Block when they were cool...and don't even flinch when people refer to them as "NKOTB"
37. You know all the words to Bon Jovi - SHOT THROUGH THE HEART.
38. You just sang those words to yourself.
39. Homemade Levi shorts.. (the shorter the better)
40. You tight rolled your jeans.
41. You owned a banana clip.
42. You used to (and probably still do)
say "What you talkin' 'bout Willis?"
43. You had big hair and you knew how to use it.
44. You're still singing shot through the heart in your head, aren't you!
ROCK ON!!!

somewhere i have a you know your a child of the 90s email too ...will see if i can find it
( i was born 81 but remember the 90s slightly better )
Caitlyn watches Jem and the holograms on youtube
found it , some are the same as the 80s ones (and some dont apply unless you were in america )
You know you're a 90's kid if...
* You've ever ended a sentence with the word "PSYCHE!"
* You can sing the rap to "The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air"
* You remember when Kurt Cobain, Tu Pac, and Selena died.
* You know that "WOAH" comes from Joey from "Blossom" and that "How Rude!" comes from Stephanie from "Full House"
* You remember when it was actually worth getting up early on a Saturday to watch cartoons.
* You got super excited when it was Oregon Trail day in computer class at school. (LMAO)
* You remember reading "Goosebumps"
* You know the profound meaning of "Wax on, wax off"
* You have pondered why Smurfette was the only female smurf.
* You took plastic cartoon lunch boxes to school. (Mine was TAZ!)
* You danced to "wannabe" by the Spice Girls, Females: had a new motto, Males: got a whole lot gay-er. (so tell me what you want, what you really really want.)
* You remember the craze then the banning of slap bracelets and slam books.
* You still get the urge to say "NOT" after (almost) every sentence...Not...
* Where in the world is Carmen San Diego? was both a game and a TV game show.
* You knew that Kimberly, the pink ranger, and Tommy, the green* Ranger were meant to be together.
(later to be white)
* "I've fallen and I can't get up"
* You remember going to the skating rink before there were inline skates
* Two words... Trapper Keeper.
* You ever got injured on a Slip 'n' Slide
* You wore socks over leggings scrunched down (not me!)
* "Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack, all dressed in black, black, black, with silver buttons, buttons, buttons, all down her back, back, back" SHE ASKED HER MOTHER MOTHER MOTHER FOR FIFTY CENTS CENTS CENTS TO SEE THE ELEPHANTS PHANTS PHANTS JUMP OVER THE FENCE THE FENCE THE FENCE
he jumped so high high high he touched the sky sky sky and he didnt come back back back til the forth of july ly ly he jumped so low ow ow he stubbed his toe toe toe and thats the end end end of the elephants show show show
* You remember boom boxes vs. cd players
* You remember New Kids on The Block when they were cool
* You knew all the characters names and their life stories on "Saved By The Bell"
* You played and or collected "Pogs"
* You had at least one Tamagotchi, GigaPet or Nano and brought it everywhere
* You watched the original Care Bears, My Little Pony, and/or Ninja Turtles
* Yikes pencils and erasers were the sh*t.
* All your school supplies were "Lisa Frank" brand.(pencils.notebooks.binders.etc.)
* You remember when the new Beanie Babies (and were always sold out.
* You used to wear those stick on earings, not only on your ears, but at the corners of your eyes.
* You remember a time before the WB.
* You've gotten creeped out by "Are You Afraid of the Dark?"
* You know the Macarena by heart.
* "Talk to the hand" ... enough said
* You thought Brain woud finally take over the world
* You always said, "Then why don't you marry it!"
you know what i remember about this era? being obsessed with Scott and Charlene on Neighbours and collecting the cards with the bubblegum,
and wearing bike pants and baggy tshirts and socks pushed down and crimping my hair and putting it in a high pony ....
good times

OMG... massive reminisce reading this thread... I was born '76 so this is entirely my childhood! hehe... I even have a really strong urge to get out my embroidery cottons and make a friendship bracelet when I get home
I did the whole spiral perm, fluro baggy tee-shirt over bike pants with scrunch socks and kung-fu shoes - probably all at the same time too... eeek

Hehe, Kelly - you know the words so much better than I do... Annie was my first 'night movie' (a sign in our household that I was a kid and no longer a baby ) - holds very fond memories for me, and I soooooo wished for ages that Daddy Warbucks was my father!

Harry and the Hendersons were about a family who hit a big foot walking across the road and he just never left and they had to hide him in their house

I remember playing with Cindy dolls (cheaper versions of Barbie) and wearing corduroy overalls. Oh and Nintendo for the older ones who were teens in the late 80s/early 90s.
Oh, the memories.......kung-fu shoes, fluoros, bike shorts, scrunchies (home-made hair ties), Georgie Pie birthday parties, velvet pinafores and roman sandals and mid-calf-length skirts, plastic headbands that clipped together.
It makes me want to bring out my photo albums.......
