Our 6 year old developed a rash yesterday it's mostly on his trunk. It's not overly itchy, last night I noticed that his glands on his neck were very swollen more so on one side and his cheeks looked puffy as well. This morning the rash is on his face as well he has a sore throat and his tonsils are even more swollen than they usually are ( a permanent after effect from strep throat last year). He is reasonably happy but has puffy eyes and looks very tired. He feels very hot to touch but his temp is only 37.

Any ideas??? We have an appointment for the docs late this afternoon but this is driving me crazy.

could it be mumps???

or maybe a viral thing? or even an allergy to something? maybe try giving him an antihistamine? and see if it settles down at all? i know when i get hay fever i get an itchy throat, puffy face, swollen tonsils and really really puffy eyes.

Yea i would try giving an antihistamine and see how it goes from that.
good luck tho and i hope he feels better soon!

Is it anything like this?  I took Michaela to the docs last friday and was told it's an urticarian rash (basically an allergic reaction).  Antihistamines did the trick but we still have no idea what caused the rash.

I hope the doc appt goes well.

Awwww your poor girl. No it looks nothing like that the spots are very small and are very rough almost like sandpaper. He is completely covered in them now.

I'm thinking maybe viral as well, hoping actually that it's viral and not the mumps.

Jo - I had the same thing a few years ago and nothing since. Weird aye.

Nuttymama - good luck for the doctor's appointment. I hope it's nothing too serious.

Haven't seen it on my boy, but have seem something very similar on my husband. Turned out he was allergic to the thing that hangs in the toilet to clean it whilst flushing. Was only a certain fragrance too, and one that he'd never reacted to before. Was a process of elimination to find out, and knew for sure when we re-introduced it and the same thing happened again.   Hope your girl is better now, poor little sausage!

Is he immunised against measles?  That would be my next guess if he's completely covered in small spots.  Good luck for the appointment and let us know how you get on.

Could be Roseola? Which is sometimes called baby measles.

Yep he is fully immunised, thought maybe it could be a mild case of german measles as it can be quite mild. Heck there is so much around at the moment who know's, doctors appointment is at 3-00 so will let you know what the "Mystery rash" is.

is it like a heat rash? Izobel had a rash like heatrash a while ago, but but when the doctor saw it it was a viral rash and all she needed was Calamine (sp) lotion and we basically had to wait it out.

Good luck at the doc hun and let us know how you go!

VIRAL!!! That's what the doc said, gave me some more pamol and some aqueous cream for his skin so it doesn't dry out from scratching. And yes we just wait it out. She just wants us to keep an eye on him as she said there is so much going around and he could pick things up easier until his "Virus" has gone.

The good news is it's not mumps or measles. For those chch mum's with young bubs apparently there have been a few reported cases of measles in chch over the last week.

The good news is she only charged me $5 instead of the $24 they are supposed to.

Viruses can really do some awful things can't they. Charlotte got this rash in February. It started on her tummy then over 24hours it spread EVERYWHERE til it started to combine and she just had big red patches. It really knocked her around. Doc thought she had the rash associated with strep throat, then Healthline told me it could be scarlet fever!!!! As it turnes out the swabs came back negative for strep and it was just a virus. Super scary though also as Harry was only about a month old at the time. Hope your wee guys feels better soon
