This was on stuff today http://www.stuff.co.nz/4599643a7773.html - Trim the grocery bill, not nutrition

The article is nothing new really, but if you go to the comments at the bottom (and make sure you click "show all") there are some GREAT tips from readers on how to stretch your money further and also good bulk-cooking ideas

Wow to this comment

" have had to reduce how much I eat as I already buy the cheapest available food and am still broke. I now split the days that I eat. I have breakfast on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I have lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I have dinner from Monday to Friday. On weekends I have breakfast and lunch but have no dinner. This has reduced my food bill by 33%. It also means that I am losing weight as well."

My tip is to go shopping early Sunday morning, most of the meat packs from Saturday are reduced by a couple of dollars each!

That's probably in the US Sparkle, or maybe another country, so believable. We're pretty lucky over here I reckon...

There are some useful tips there but I'm not sure about "Dave" who only eats breakfast on Mon, Wed & Fri (& dinner), lunch on Tue & Thur (& dinner) & breakfast & lunch on the weekends (no dinner). . Can anyone say hungry?!

Does anyone know what powdered milk actually tastes like? I'm not convinced.

I don't like powdered milk it's - we had it when we went to Raro for honeymoon and just decided to have dry cearal instead lol

I'm still managing to stay within my budget for food ($200 one week, $50 the next)

I am interested to know how the person who posted about home-made yoghurt makes a new batch by just using 2 tablespoons of the previous batch made??

I use a new packet each time I make yoghurt in my Eziyo and home made yoghurt is only like around $1 cheaper than a 6 pack!

Ugh I hate powdered milk too.

When I was flatting, I used to feed 2 people on 20 bucks a week. It can be done! (of course there was no kids involved) We ate veges and a bit of meat but never had to have crappy milk power - although its not too bad in coffee.

blah powdered milk is foul!! I remember going to Young Mariners (girl sea scouts) and being provided with milk powder for our Milo's when we came in from being on the ocean.... that memory will haunt me forever LOL

Another good thing is to make sure you aren't hungry when you go to the supermarket... that way you don't buy things because of the convenience
