I had a bad birthing experience with my first, I freaked out so things stopped happening and then I had a VERY bad pethidine reaction.
Anyway, we have decided to try for another home birth but are going to be prepared for the hospital if we have to go. I am determined to do it this time, but keep wondering if maybe I have lost my last ounce of samity?

My mum had an awful birth experience with me too. She'd had 2 babies already, both quick and easy and then when my labour wasn't going as expected she started freaking out too and it slowed everything down which made her freak out more and everything got worse. She went on to have another baby after me. My little sis was mums biggest baby and longest labour but she swears it was her easiest. The difference was that she read up on labour, made birth plan, looked into all eventualities and went into it with more confidence. You can do this too. You've already had a "what not to do" birth, now it's time for you to have an amazing birth experience. Have you thought about buying/borrowing the Pink Kit? Good luck. -------------

I did look into the Pink Kit. Has anyone used it/can recommend it? I have a fantastic midwife this time around, whereas my first midwife was wuite new to the whole thing (i was her second birth she did unsupervised) and she definitely took a sideline. The best part is that majority of the time i feel super-confident about the whole thing! |

The pink kit is designed to empower women and their a partners. It's about building your skills, knowledge and confidence and it teaches birth skills for whatever type of birth you have (vaginal, c-section, emergency c, assisted etc) and goes through everything so that even if things don't go to plan you know what's going on and what your body is doing (sometimes the midwives are too busy, or as in rachndeans case too inexperienced, to explain things to you). I borrowed the pink kit from my midwife when I was pregnant but have to admit I only really briefly glanced at it. Luckily I had my mum at my birth and she explained things to me when things happened that I didn't expect. Next time I'll use the pink kit. I am really into reading up about stuff and have heaps of preggy books i got off TradeMe for like a dollar and so read up about the birthing process heaps prior to the birht. It was greta as i knew what was happening when i needed to do a BM, i had also been told at antenatal to let the mw know this as it's useful coz it tells them baby is in the canal. SO i sat there and told my mw i needed to do bm but i knew it was coz baby was descending thru the canal. i think she couldn't believe how much i actually knew. lol. and how apologetic i was etc. but.... that's another story. lol. -------------

My first birth was pretty traumatic, had a PHB, major bleed ( 3 litres) as my placenta didn't come away so had to have it manually removed, and the thought of having number 2 scared the jeepers out of me. Lucy was fine as she was born naturally and had a water birth.
When the 2nd time came around, my midwife and the doctors were prepared this time around, so I was hooked up onto a machine that contracted my urterus and on a drip, but it was a breeze, after 2.5 hours, again a natural birth, my 2nd daughter was born.
