Subject: bronchiolitis and humidifiers?

Chloe has bronchiolitis caused by RSV (respiratory virus) and the Dr said that we should get a humidifier for her room. I have no idea what this is or where to get one from, and I forgot to ask in my rush (we had been waiting at Urgent Drs for almost 2 hours) 
Does anyone have any ideas about it? Also any other ways of helping bubs breathe easier with bronchiolitis? Dr gave us nose drops and a vaporiser thing for her room, and said to get a humidifier, and use regular pamol for at least 3-4 days. At this stage there its just viral so ABs won't help. ------------- Chloe (4 years) and Oliver (3 years). |

 She keeps crying this sad little tired cry, she can't sleep because she's so wheezy, and now she's only drinking about 20mL at a time  I hope we don't have to take her back to the Urgent Dr again today but she just seems to be struggling more and more ------------- Chloe (4 years) and Oliver (3 years). |

HUGE hugs... they can give them a steriod to help with breathing.. deifnietly take her back in if necessary. Keeping her upright and leaning on you may help her breathe a bit easier.

you can get these plug in things that put out a damp eucolyptus air into the room. i have never tried them, but In have seen them for sale at the chemist.
BTW, when i was a baby I contracted pneumonia which ended up being terrible asthma. Mum used to put the bath or shower on with really steamy water and then just sit me in there. apprently it hel[ped. |

the plug in thing is the vaporiser that we have, he said a humidifier too but I've just been taking her into the bathroom with the hot shower running so she can breathe in the steam (which I'm sure is probably more expensive but oh well it seems to help a little).
She's finally asleep with the bassinet propped up and the vaporiser right underneath, she wouldn't drink any of her last feed though. i guess we will have to see how things go the rest of the night and in the morning. I'm so tired but I don't think I will be getting much sleep tonight either with her still wheezing, coughing and grunting every time she breathes
I asked the Dr about asthma because I get it and he said they couldn't diagnose that until the child is 3 years old, or something like that. Then he listened to her lungs and said she definitely had bronchiolitis and told me all about it. It's so hard being a mummy sometimes, I feel exhausted. ------------- Chloe (4 years) and Oliver (3 years). |

Hugs LittleBug, I hope Chloe is able to get some rest tonight, thus allowing her parents to get the much needed sleep.
Phoenix has a cold at the moment, we went to the Doctors but have since been sent home. Am keeping an eye on him as he sounds really rattly now when he breathes. Oh how our children worry us half to death, don't they?! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Sucks that she is so young. We had the same thing with both our kids. Both hospitilised at just over 2 and under 1. jBoth given oxygen as their levels were dangerously low. really freaky and horrible.
With the steriods - tastes really yuk. we mixed it with yoghurt and got it down easier. BTW, Taine still gets wheezy, but Jake very rarely, so they don't think he has asthma, even though he had several attacks as a toddler |

no he said humidifier, the moist air helps loosen the mucus. I asked at a pharmacy today and apparantly some chemists hire them out. might go hunting later. ------------- Chloe (4 years) and Oliver (3 years). |

Poor little bubba and poor mummy too.
My little girl has the same thing. She is so hoarse that she can't actually cry. That's been worrying me because if somethings very wrong, how will I know without watching her all night, which is what I've been doing for last 4 nights. She has been coughing so much that she finishes the cough with choking and then vomiting because she coughs so much it makes her sick. I can't bear it. Only thing is...my dr told me that the humidifyer wouldn't make a difference. Have you tried it yet because I'm wondering if I SHOULD give it a go. Dr also told me it's highly likely she will have a cough until she's one with this. (They also said they couldn't diagnose asthma yet. I think she has athsma and the virus on top of that makes a flu 101 times worse. Soooo....hugs to you and I understand!!! I managed to get a two hour nap this arvo while hubby was home. Hope you are managing to get some rest too :-)

thanks butefulbaby, yeah Chloe has lost her voice too and throws up from coughing so much. I tend to take her into the steamy bathroom if she has a really bad coughing fit and also when we are trying to feed her. We sleep with her in the bassinet right next to me in bed, so I can hear how bad her breathing is and tell when she's awake etc. I feel so bad for her. Haven't had time to try and find a humidifier yet, but the steamy bathroom seems to help a tiny bit. Yeah the Dr said that she's likely to have a cough for ages too. I might try take her back to the Dr this avo when I get home from uni, because she only had one wet nappy yesterday and isn't drinking much, but she's doing way more poo than usual (??) DH took the day off work to stay at home with her today.

Oh, our poor babies!!
I have just come back from the specialist at hospital as our baby is booked for surgery for something completely different and specialist thinks she may have a abnormality in her wind pipe. Weird, first they said it was her voice box then bonchoitits and now a wind pipe? In other words, they wouldn't have a clue. What ever it is on top of the flu is just nasty. Poor girl is not happy. Hope your little princess is a little happier today. Glad we're fianlly booked for surgery. Public was tricky and kept putting second surgery off so we've gone private and just like that....booked for surgery! I know they work on urgency, at least we got the frst one done. Hope her flu is gone by then or we have to wait another month. Hugs to your and your gorgeous little poppet! |
