Just wondering what clothing you found to be essential for your newborns... I know there's a checklist on OB, but wanted to find out from some recent newborn mums what they thought.
I'm looking for quantities, but also sizing -- like, how many NB size should I buy or can bubs just wear bigger clothes? Also, is it necessary for those first few months (considering it's winter) to have lots of longsleeve stuff? DH tells me we won't need a lot of clothes cause it'll be wrapped up all the time, but I'm not so sure

I have found over my years that PP is bigger sizing. Andrew was 8lb 4 born and was in newborn clothes for a good 10 weeks before we went into 000 clothes. However Josh was 9lb 4 born and was in NB for 6 weeks before he had to go into 000 clothes. I was told by heaps of people your children won't need NB clothes they will go into 000 clothes so I had 3 NB oneies when Andrew was born. We had to do a mad shopping trip a few days after he was born to get more. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

My littleHayley seems to go through lots of the newborn domed onesies and I have about 4 long sleeve ones and approx 6 of the short sleeve ones. Also 2 thermal short sleeves and 2 woollen vests. I find I do use a bit of the long sleeved stuff as it is quite cold at the moment. Hayley was 6 lb 15, so am assuming she will be in nb size for a while yet, especially as a lot of it is too big!

| woolen vests and hats were a must for us. about ten. and lots of all-in-ones. pants and sets are cute, but a bit impractical for wee ones. Jake was in newborn for about 12 weeks, but Taine was in prem for about 3 weeks and then newborn for a further 10 i think. |

Cooper wore AIO's for the first 3mths of his life. He had lightweight ones and warmer ones for when the weather wasn't that great. He also wore them to bed with a AIO singlet underneath.
I agree with Tammy, lots of wraps. As for the sizing, I had brought Cooper all newborn and 000's and he didn't fit them until he was about 9wks old. | Daniel was in newborn for like 6 weeks i think (seems like forever ago!). next time I'm just going to invest in lots of all-in-ones. I hated dressing a floppy newborn, they were so easy and id just get ones of different warmth/weights and then some basic singlets. |

Mittens Mittens Mittens!! For the first few days of Jack's life he wore socks on his hands as I didn't have any mittens!
I found AIOs/stretch and grows the best with little body suits underneath and a cardy over top. I was lucky that Jack wasn't a spilly baby so usually only had one outfit a day. I think he was in newborn for a while as I started putting him in 0-3mth just so they would get some wear before he grew out of them. ------------- Lindsey

I also found having a couple of nighties great, so much easier to change in the middle of the night if you don't have lots of buttons or domes to deal with. I have 4 or 5 this time round from NB and then 0-3m as well. Anyway its fun to shop if you are allowed!! -------------

I found that Thomas was just in all in ones, about 4 a day. He spilled quite a bit (and still does) so all in ones were/are great and easy to wash. He's got a few nice outfits for going out as well - LOTS of hats and socks etc. Farmers has lots of all in ones that are nice, and in lots of different fabrics as well. All in Ones with feet - the toweling kind.
LOTS of singlets and body suits (both cotton and wool/long and short sleeved) as newbies have BIG poo-splosions or spill after a feed and go through a few per day
Clothes that don't take too long to get clean/dry -------------

T was in prem clothes for about a month and was born the day before he was due. My mum had a mad dash out to get premmie aios! He slept in the drawstring nighties when really little, when changing nappies in middle of the night it was great, didnt have to muck around with domes when half asleep just draw the drawstring and back to bed! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Hmm, first time round I bought heaps of clothes and they simply didn't get worn. 3rd time round I had no problems surviving with 3 nighties (I tried to keep DD in these day and night for first few weeks as so easy to deal with), 2 merino long sleeved singlets, 1 pair merino footed tights, 2 short sleeved stretch and grows. I do have a drier though and I only remember 1 time that I had to breakout some of the boys blue stuff. DD is not a spilly baby though. As for sizing it was just about all 000, only 1 nightie was NB but large sizing. Now at 7 weeks she is into 00 sizing and weighs 12lb (was 7lb 12oz born), hope this helps.'

AIO's with sewn in feet were essential for the first three months as were wraps. Both mine were winter babies so woolen hats and jumpers or cardigans were a must. Brooke had reflux so I got through up to six changes a day plus tons of burp clothes or bibs. With Caleb I pretty much rotated four outfits consisting of singlets, AIO's, jumpers and booties/sox. I reckon gowns are the best practical-wise, they're great for night changes, I can never get the domes on the AIO's lined up lol.
Mittens are a must, esp for winter babies but even my summer baby wore them to stop her scratching herself. Socks seem to stay on better than booties. None of mine ever wore 0000/NB stuff (my smallest was 6lb8oz, biggest was 9lb1oz), they all went straight into 000/0-3, they grow so quick and in the first few weeks it doesn't matter if their clothes are a little big. ETA: Chiara is my first winter baby, I've bought her a lot of merino stuff for layering to keep her nice and warm. Atm she's in a cotton singlet, merino gown, woolen cardy, socks and merino mittens and wrapped in a cotton wrap. That's in bed where the room is 18-20 degrees, when she gets up I put a merino hat on her and when we went out earlier I also had a blanket over her to keep her snuggly. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

i have never dressed my kids in mittens, and toby was a july baby... in fact i gave my winter baby heat rash... ... a singlet and a all inone body suit with feet was sufficient. a cardy for going out maybe ... but they are wrapped and do a lot of sleeping too. how many you will need tho does depend on your baby and how spilly etc. ------------- http://www.myfitnesspal.com/weight-loss-ticker">

AIO's were great, i had a heap of friends/family buy me NB sized ones and Eden was 9lb11oz and 54cm long and didnt fit them! she was too long for them, so went straight into 0-3mnths.
but lots and lots of AIO's, but both my girls were summer babies so honestly didnt wear much (both v hot babies) |

One thing I found really useful was to find body suits (onsies) that dome up at the front - kimono style. That way you dont have to try and get it over their head. Just open out, lay down and do up....HEAPS easier. I think JK have them.
As fo sizing I was told not too much NB but Tom (7lb5) needed prem for the first few weeks as well. then he raced through the sizes.
I always (and still do) used a onsie under everything. So onsie, wool top, jacket and pants etc. I didnt like AIOs so much as like Maya I could never line up all the snaps...much easier just to pull up some pants with feet in them and a little jacket that again didnt have to go ver a head was nice too. Snaps are easier than buttons and I found zips too harsh on a newborn.
One thing we all forget is that Shops are still open once baby is born! and ifyou cant get out there is internet shopping so you can always buy m ore when you know what you need (and thenget the right colours etc) |

Zechariah lived in gowns for the first 3 weeks! they were sooo easy. Another thing I did was I would wrap a cloth nappy around his waist, over his other nappy, and this helped to catch any extra poo's! I remember being able to just drawstring up the bottom and he looked like a little worm all wrapped up!

Jack was in NB for up to 3 months I think, he was really long but skinny. The best thing I found for him was two piece suits due to his length. Otherwise things that fit him lengthwise were swimming on him width-wise.
I would just buy the standard few NB and 000 and then go shopping after bubs is born. I wish I'd done that as most of Jack's clothes now don't fit him as he's just too long but they're so wide they look ridiculous. |

I found I didnt have enough NB size's, caden was 9lb 8oz when born and NB stuff is still a wee bit big on him.
I find I use heaps of singlets, onsies(with long sleeves), stretc n grows with and without feet, woolen long sleeve tops for under his clothes. I went to TnT and got him a heap of new winter clothes, all NB size and they will probably fit him for quite a while yet. ------------- |
