Can anyone recommend a particular kind?
I've heard/read that Avent Isis is REALLY good, but then I have a friend who reckons her manual Medela was just as good. I would probably be looking at a manual rather than electric, since I would like to breast-feed normally, but I would also like to have a pump on hand just in case. I used Stacey's Avent and loved it - I used both manual and electric. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

I've got the Avent Isis manual, have had it since I had Maya and I  it. I hired a Medela double electric with the gremlins and it was good, but I found the manual Isis better so ended up using that to express all of their feeds for the first 10 weeks and it's still going strong.------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

I had the manual Avent with Zamara and it worked well - at one point was using it once a day, but usually it was less frequent than that.
I used the single Electric Avent Isis when I had all the feeding issues with K, and it was even better  I liked that it had a battery pack so it travelled really well, didn't need to be hooked to mains power etc.
I then bought the Avent Isis Duo as our feeding issues were continuing, and it was a complete and total lifesaver - comfortable, quiet, easy to use, and I could get 300mls in 10 minues. That said, I wouldn't recommended it to anyone but those planning on expressing the majority of feeds, as the cost is seriously prohibitive, and the single is fine for less-frequent expressing. ------------- Margo |

I use the avent manual and have had no problems with it...but it does depend on frequently you plan on expressing. I ended up using it more than i had originally planned to and in hindsight probably should have got an electronic one (am planning on doing so when we have a second). ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |

I asked this question a couple of years ago and the best advice I had was to price them up and look at rental options and then wait and see what I needed.
I would have bought a manual one, but as I ended up express feeding for 6 months glad I held off and got a medela electric one, from Trade Me I just bought new disposables for the pump. I have an avent and a medela. The manual medela was a 2 handed thing which was a pia but you can turn it into an electric easily. That was really good when I was expressing off one side and feeding off the other because my baby encouraged the let down and the pump just had to extract the milk. Once I went back to work the medela wasn't doing it for me so I got a manual avent and found it heaps better. I'll probably use my avent next time around. -------------

Thanks for your replies, I think the Avent Isis Manual is going to be the way to go...for now anyway.
I had problems breast-feeding my first, not for lack of milk...it was a latching on problem, and I'd like to have a pump on hand right from the start as my 'back up' this time...I know the electric pumps are faster and easier, but since I don't know whether or not I'll need it at all yet...it's quite a lot of $ to spend when it could potentially be wasted. If I end up exclusively express feeding again, then I'll buy the electric at the time. I guess the manual would do the job until then...if I had to do it...? Otherwise I'll probably just use it so that hubby can take a night feed every now and then!

I have a medela double electric one. Don't know the name of it but it was darn expensive and comes in a back pack type setup.
I have to say I love it to bits and I've been using it at least twice a day since the girls were born. This was the brand that was recommended to us by the Multiple Birth club and it's also the brand that was used in the hospital. How much you spend is directly proportional to how much you intend to express. There's lots of places you can rent them from also. regarding the latching issues. I had similar problems and started (still am) using nipple shields which made things a lot easier. |

Sounds like the same one I rented Tishy.
There's still a good chance you'll be able to successfully feed this bub Bubnumber2, the gremlins were a nightmare to feed and never latched well, yet Chiara came out sucking and is going brilliantly which has made all the difference. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

Yup, I'm quite hopeful that things will go easier with this one...but I'm wanting to go in fully prepared for anything this time!
With my first, one of the nurses commented that my son had learned to suck on his tongue before he was born, and that contributed to the problems we were having with 'normal' breast feeding. Well, that and reflux and mastitis.
