Hi I work at Farmers the reason why the have stopped doing them is partly because the majority of them get canceled and also they have noticed the decline in them and it ends up costing more in the time of processing them etc apparently they looked in to it for got some time and made the decision it isn't worth doing them anymore so hope that helps you understand why I understand it is a pain but thats just the choice they have made.

That's what I figured would be behind them doing that. I don't blame them to be honest!

As an alternative just put the money into a separate savings account until you have the full amount?

I think it's gonna stop a lot of people from shopping there to be honest. I wanted to put a couple of things on lay-by for Thomas for xmas, but I ended up going elsewhere.

I was annoyed with Farmers on Saturday, as went to pay for something with my farmers card, and the sales assistance, "that's your old card" WTF, it's the only card I've got and I haven't received anything in the post, except my monthly statements! Apparently the cards have changed and I need to ring them. Shouldn't they being getting in contact with their customers if they're changing the system?? Oh well, being hormonal and hate shopping at the best of times, I ended up using my visa, just so I could get out of there.

I agree they are going to lose a lot of customers over it as a lot of people are going to go to Kmart or The Warehouse where they still offer laybys.

They should have sent a letter to everyone that has got a farmers card not to use their old card after such a date then people won't get so annoyed with them by trying to use their old card. They need to work on their customer service.

It's so daft.. it's the only way to go and just because a few people stop their laybys which makes Farmers as a company loose money why ruin it for everyone??? It's not like they are hard off

Sorry but personally i dont really see what you girls are on about, and why your making such a big deal over nothing. Its just as easy to put the money into a savings account that you cant touch with an eftpos card (plus earning a good interest rate). At least that way you dont have to worry about trying to find the $$ when the time comes to make a layby payment, plus they still offer credit card type services with their farmers card.

As for the farmerscard- I guess its like every other credit type card it does expire at some stage and I in the past when I used to have a credit card (and even community services cards from WINZ) there have been plenty of times when ive had to chase up a new card.

And obviously there were a few more than a handful of people cancelling them to make such a major decision. They also had signs all around farmers explaining that they would no longer be offering a layby service.

I think thats more than good enough for me!

I kinda agree with Sylvia there.

And to be honest I really didn't think Farmers did laybys coz of the Farmers Card.

This doesn't bother me too much as I have been trying very hard not to put much on credit or layby but as for the cards changing.....

"As for the farmerscard- I guess its like every other credit type card it does expire at some stage and I in the past when I used to have a credit card (and even community services cards from WINZ) there have been plenty of times when ive had to chase up a new card. "

I think what the other girls are getting at is that the cards are NOT expired but they have changed the cards and their system which has made the card invalid and no-body has been informed .... or had the replacement cards sent out, which should have happened BEFORE the system got changed

I kind of agree with Phat_Cat *ducks for cover*

Although Im not pregnant and hormonal ... oh and Ive never done lay by in my life - so I personally wont miss it

On a side note ... I have had quite a few "customer service" related problems with Farmers (and we bought all our baby gear there - over a period of time as money allowed) ... I found that if you complain to the manger (of the shop - not the department) ... they usually go out of there way to remedy the situation.

I agree with Sylvia too.

We have a seperate savings account that we put money into each fortnight for christmas etc. Because it builds up whenever we see something we want for a birthday or christmas, we have the money there and pay for it outright rather than putting it on laybuy. It's not exactly hard to do. At least while its sitting in our account its earning interest etc too

Farmers don't own the Finance side of things anymore as the new owners didn't want to take over that side of things so the deal with the new cards actually doesn't have anything to do with Farmers the shop anymore the sales assistant should have offered to ring them for you so you could have still made the purchase on your card and then they would send you a new card straight away. They did send the new cards so a few people obviously got missed for whatever reason who knows.

ETA the old cards became invalid in April.

i dont blame farmers really...and it makes me mad to try and buy something when it first comes out only to find that others have put on layby and then only to find it thrown out as old stock months later cause they didnt come and pick up their layby...

MIL works for K mart and she finds all sorts of things come out of laybys....some by end of it can be quite old....

I can see why they are changing their policy...and mine is if youcannot afford to buy it or charge it to your credit card to repay then why layby it???the only thing i can recall laybying is the stroller...and only cause we had no room for it...and DH went in and paid for it 3 weeks later...ugh!

I knew Farmers St Lukes didn't do laybys, they blamed it on lack of space.

Not every one has credit cards nor do they have the money lying around to be able to buy items straight away or to even pay the cc off straight away to avoid the interest charges. My reasons for using layby is that I can pay what I can afford when I can afford it.

I don't agree with what Farmers have done re their cards, there seems to have been a breakdown in communication there. Hopefully they'll get that sorted out, although still having teething problems 3 mths down the track isn't very good.

Danni-chick, thanks for the update re the cards
I don't use the card very much and maybe that's why I've been caught out.

Mel - I recently (well in the last year) did a Layby at Farmers St Lukes (Cot Mattress) and they LOST my mattress in the store room so just had to take one off the shop floor Made me think if they actually put a mattress out the back or they just expected there to be one on the shop floor once I had actually paid my Layby off.. I don't know what they would have done if they had been out of stock on that particular day?

I totally understand that but what i and a couple of others were suggesting was putting what you could afford (ie what would be the layby amount) into a savings account thus earning a good interest rate as well.

I dont really shop at Farmers much as I find them a bit more expensive then others!! (Big things any ways). I dont have a Farmers card either (dont need another C/Card ) But here is what I think...
1) Lay buy - I lay Buy because I dont want to bring the item home as DD is really good at finding things and I dont want her to see her Pressies and I dont have much spare space a home. But at the same time dont want to miss out on specials. I also didnt think Farmers did Lay Buy??
Well thats my excuse!

2) Farmers Card - I agree some thing went wrong there...there should have been a period where the old cards are still accepted e.g 1 month. Cant go cold turkey....what if some one didnt get theirs??

I worked at Farmers as well but left when I had DD its a real pain in the but with the Farmers Cards because customers always assume that Farmers are responsible for them and there dodgy card serives but they aren't they r owned by a finance company so its not Farmers fault that they aren't doing their job correctly when it comes to issuing new cards.

Secondly the layby thing did kind of suck really, I don't agree with them cancelling it but mainly because thats how I buy EVERYTHING these days last xmas alone we laybyd (and completed) over $2000 worth of stuff. Also it was my job to put away the cancelled layby stock and honestly here in Gisborne (im not saying its the same anywhere else because I know how busy it is in Aucks) I would put away maybe 5-6 cancelled laybys but would generate at least 10 new ones a day so I really don't know where they get their figures from. Secondly yup I have gone to the Warehouse to layby xmas toys and refuse to shop at Farmers now because its just too hard to put money up front for things. Yeah a savings account does work but then I use it and buy something that I wanted to get then the next month something else will come up on sale and the account is empty again. I think you should have a choice

From my experience it doesn't take long to do a layby ESPECIALLY on the new system. I say keep the layby system but increase the cancel fee to 50% lol then no-one will cancel and everyone will think twice before laybying something they don't want. Anyway im rambling now and I dont own Farmers haha

True Jess, but many people will just pay the balance and return for refund. Thats what I used do when i was a teenager to avoid the cancellation fee... I was naughty

I didnt realise places did layby here....
