Is it quite a normal and expected for a first pregnancy to go over 40 weeks? I really want to have baby on my due date (i know this is a high expectation) but have been told that most first births go overdue.

I don't know about first babies being overdue, but I do know that only 10% of babies are born on their due date, and that 38 to 42 weeks is considered "full term".

Kiya was early, Josiah was born on his due date (as were both I - eldest, and my husband Nathaniel - youngest)

Hello!

With my first pregnancy I was 10 days overdue.

I have heard that alot of first time pregnancies tend to be late, but like becca said, only 10% of babies are born on their due date and your EDD is only an 'estimate' and can be two weeks either way?

my sister was born 14 days early (mums first)
my daughter was born exactly 1 week early :D

my first was induced at 39 weeks, second was induced 10 days overdue..... so i have never had an on time baby!
i was 9 days late myself.

but in saying that, my sister had her first at 39 weeks and her second at 39 weeks.....
i had a friend who had her first at 39 weeks....
and a cousin who has also had both of her 2 at 39 weeks....

My friends babies were both over due and both by almost 2 weeks, another friend's first baby put in her appearance the morning she was due to be induced...and another friend was also around 10 days over due...overall most people I know seem to be a bit overdue with the first one but that said I've spoken to/heard of some women who were early...in the end the due date is an estimate...

My daughter was born on her due date....she would have been two days early if she looked down instead of up (ended up having a c section after two days being in labour)....my sister in law was 12 days overdue with her 1st....I was 2 weeks early and my brother was 1 week early....????

Maya was 10 days early.

I was Mum's first, 2 days early. Things went downhill from there - brother #1 born 5 weeks early, sister born 4 weeks early, brother #2 waters broke at 27 weeks, ended up being born by c-sect at 36 weeks after 9 weeks in hospital flat on her back.

Hoping I don't follow her form...

Hmmm well I was 10 days late (I'm the eldest in my family) then my sister was 10 days late then BOTH of my brothers were 10 days early. I guess they were in a hurry
My son Alex was born 8 days late but I was induced because of pre-eclampsia and he wasn't really ready to come without help.
My SIL was 3 & 1/2 weeks early with her girl though so you just can't tell really.

Hannah was 9 days over (strange dates tho )

well i was due on the 7th of december and born on the 30th -which would make me burnt to a crisp-been in the oven waaaay to long so i think they may have estimated the date a teeny bit wrong (lol-ya think?)

Caitlyn was due on the 1st of june and born on the 8th,as i said she would be (psychic abilities woooooo) but she looked like she was still a bit raw-lots of yucky vernix (i didnt hold her very long until they wiped her)

SO basically your baby will come on the day that she comes and whether that is the day shes due or 2weeks after....what ever day it is will become the most important day of ur life.

God thats profound...i might just copy it down

lol haven't read all the replies here so other probably already said the same stuff but yep only 10% arrive on their due date, other myths about first time are that first labours are *at least* 12 hours, lol

my first was due the 13th of August - but came on the 5th (always said i was due the first week in august..)
my second was due about the 6th of June - but i told everyone the last week in may, and hello - May 25th.

baby comes when it comes. no matter how much you want baby to come on due date, early, or to stay in there forever, (as if) it's not really up to you.

Mine was 9 hours, shortest part for me was the first stage and second took forever because his heart rate kept dropping and I wasnt allowed to push just incase because everyone was busy in theatre with c sections and i would have had to go all the way over the other side of the hospital.

it shouldn't be Emma -

the saying is that it takes around 12 hours for first labours because everything has to stretch so slowly and the cervix has to first shorten and then dilate - so once you get to 3cm it's an average of 1cm per hour from there - that doesn't take into account those with posterior bubbies though, cos they have to turn also so it takes alot longer and a heck more painful.

quite a few people either tend to be really long, or the complete opposite.. i think it's just good for 1st timers to know that it DOES NOT ALWAYS TAKE 12 HOURS!! That's what i thought my first time around, so thought that there was no way i needed to ring my midwife. lukily i was a bit of a panic-monkey and mike rung her anyway, and hello, i got up the hosital in time to push... do not take anything as gospel, lol.

hey yeah, and i remember wondering about the second time round thing before i had Ayja, and i remember Maria reassuring me that it wouldn't take me 2 hours again to push her out like i did with Paris, she said second time round it was 10 mins - te he he Maria.. i must've been lucky (well not really, it freeeking hurt!!!)cos it only took exactly 10 mins like you said

A four hour pregnancy??? Geez, bet a few of the girls here would be gagging for that!

Some people say that genetics influence labour time, but to be honest I think it's influenced by a lot of other things before genetics. Don't be worried though... it all goes by in a blur... 4 hours... 8 hours... 24 hours... either way it sucks.

did anyone here give birth without an epi? im not having one due to having a bad back etc even my chiropractor agreed

Posted By: mum2emj
Date Posted: 29 March 2006 at 2:07pm
mine have been reasonable lenthts.... first had my waters broken at 10am 3 cm dialated and jade was born after 10 mins of pushing at 2.30pm(ish) and my second my waters were broken at 3pm again 3 cm dialated emma was born at 6.20pm after no more than 10 mins pushing (wasnt long only a few but she had pooped so needed suctioning which helkd it up a bit!) they were just over 17 months apart, i dont know if that helped the speedy arrival??

Posted By: nikkitheknitter
Date Posted: 29 March 2006 at 3:37pm
Jess... I think people that gave birth with an epi are in the minority. They aren't actually that easy to get in most hospitals

Posted By: mum2emj
Date Posted: 29 March 2006 at 3:41pm
i had to have an epi with my first to control my blood pressure, and i hated it. the anethist had trouble getting it in and it did hurt my back for about 9 weeks after the birth. but i might of had a bad experience. and i didnt want it so that prob didnt help.

second time around i didnt have one and i dont plan to this time either, but i still say keep an open mind.

i agree with nikki- i know more people to not have an epi than have one, unless they have had c-sections.
in america it seems to be the thing though.

Posted By: Roksana
Date Posted: 29 March 2006 at 4:25pm
I had an epidural ...even tho I was like "nop never" but ended up getting it after 36 hours in labour. It was great...even better because I ended up with a C Section and that cut the prep time by 30min or so.

u gotta do what u gotta do...and nothing we can say can actually describe what contractions feel like till ur having them

i had no epi (or anything actually) and hurt like the dickens (whatever that is) but looking back it wasnt bad-bloody straightforward labour actually...and even tho it was 24 what i forgot to mention was the first 12 were bearable-so bearable that i was nextdoor at my best mates bday party playing truth or dare (well i couldnt drink so i had to amuse myself somehow)

geez u'll be fine-just think in china the woman takes a break from ploughing the rice fields and says "ooh excuse me...and squats down and delivers a baby....then that baby is working in the field by the end of the day and mum is preggers with number 2! hahahaha

Posted By: robyn
Date Posted: 29 March 2006 at 7:29pm
I was also determined not to have an epi. Part of my whole anxiety thing is control and I hated the thought of having no control over my legs and also didnt want to be confined to the bed plus I had been told some people get sick with them and I so hate being sick (in fact I dont drink because of that) but when the time actually came I was throwing up constantly with the pain and refused to move from the bed then when they said I had to wait because of his heart rate I asked for one and it was the best thing I did, I stopped vomiting straight away too. I actually enjoyed the birth after that and got to have a bit of a sleep aswell. I had no problems after either and will be asking for one the minute I get to hospital this time. The only bad thing about was because Kobe was taken to NICU I couldnt go and see him till I was able to move my legs. I found the gas did absolutely nothing for me and was to busy throwing up to use it.

I'm a bit behind on this topic, seem to have missed it...

Hannah was born on her due date. My waters broke at 1am, contractions almost immediately, didnt get to 3cm until 11am and it was really sore by then - no epis in Dannevirke, only gas and pethidine. I remember thinking at the time if I was in Palmy Id be asking for an epi, but I didnt have the choice so just got on with it. Hannah arrived at 2.42pm after about an hour and a half of pushing, so only about 2 hours to dilate last 7 cm (1 hour per cm - whatever!). It still hurt like hell even with gas and pethidine which made me feel out of it, but all worht it.
