I know there are certain words you cant use to name you child and i thought that Sex was one of them.

I dont really think that they should force a name change on that girl though what if her name is part of their Hawaiian culture even though she doesnt like it? I mean the tribes in american use names like Dances with Wolves etc. Besides lots of people dont go by there given name i know heaps who are known by their middle names or nicknames. I use to hate my name as a kid but im glad it was never changed.

I just think its taking another right away from parents i mean one celeb kid is called Pilot Inspektor and Michael Jackson was allowed to name his child Blanket which i think is wrong in worse ways than Fish n Chips or Benson & Hedges

Michael Jackson's son isn't named Blanket though is he? It's just a wacky nickname he gave him. That was what I read anyway, lol, so of course I believe it
The way I read the article, the 9 year old girl wanted the change because she is so embarrassed by her name. I think by 9 she would be old enough to express her honest feelings about her name so its a fair call by the judge, chances are the teasing is only going to get worse as she gets older. I can't really imagine 'Talula does the hula in Hawaii' being a Hawaiian cultural name? JMO though, I've been known to be wrong

Two words.

ON DRUGS

You'd have to be (or just a terrible, terrible person) to name your child something like that. Surely people that name their kids stuff like that should be sent straight to CYFS.

I think I trump you all though (cos I like doing that)...

I taught a boy who's mother was a druggie and had 12 kids to god knows how many different partners. His legal first name was Lucifer. Yep. You read right. So of course he was known by a different name and none of the other kids were any wiser, but seriously?

emz - if Lucifer was a girl they could call her Lucy? Doesn't work for a boy though, somehow...
Honestly. Lucifer.

I love the name Rory for a girl. And Rowan. And Regan. All usually boys names but so sweet for girls I think.

My mum once told me about a child named Mighty Mongrel Mob - MMM for short.

I'm a big fan of 'normal' names. Some of the made up ones around these days just freak me out. Reckon you'd ever take seriously Prime Minister 4 Real Clark, or Bishop Sex Fruit Pompellier

My best friend and I used to joke that names are getting so ridiculous that we'd name our babies Terracotta Pot and Casserole Dish

What's wrong with the name Lucifer? It means Bringer of Light, and I think it's lovely... I don't quite like it enough to use it for a child, but not far off it... If you subscribe to the typical christian faith, it's possibly slightly disturbing, but otherwise perfectly fine IMO.

What's wrong with it is that it gives the child such a stigma, you would not believe what this kid had been through with a name like that (hence why he was called something else)... he was told time and again by people about demonic things to do with his name so he starting acting up (like you might if your mum was a loser druggie anyway) and ended up moving foster home to foster home. What chance does a child have of ever being in a respectable profession with names that insight ridicule, anger, mocking etc.

And unfortunately, while a lot of names have lovely meanings, people do not go around saying 'hi, I'm *a bringer of light*' that say 'hi, I'm Lucifer'.

Just m2c. I think its really rude of parents to name their kids some things, its not like the parents have to live with it, the kids do. It may be cutesy or cool at that point in time, but eventually the child will be an adult, someone's parent, grandparent, or maybe a leader of our country. Noone would elect someone into power called Lucifer.

A bit OT but we haven't exactly got "normal" names for our cats. The mother cat is Buddims, and her two kids are 'Fagz' and 'Meimei (pronounced Me Me).

I STILL giggle when my parents call for them outside They're 6 & 7 years old now ...funny how certain names stick. The boy was named Fagz because before he was fixed he had HUGE man bits and when he walked ....ahh you get the picture

I used to be like that too - hence Hannah for our first daughter. But we even get asked how to spell that!!! These days, you can't take any spelling for granted (such as Jaykib etc) so spelling is just becoming normal. We have to spell our surname and our street address, and DH and I have alternate spellings for both our first names, so by the time I got to baby #2, different spellings didn't both me. And then I got really different with Krystiana - traditional-ish name but definitely a different spelling. Actually at first I wanted her to be Krystal, and that's how I got the spelling.

I once heard of twins - Orange and Lemon Peel - in the States of course, and yes their names got changed after going thru the Court too! Some people really are cruel.

About a year ago on Close Up there was an interview about a couple that wanted to call their son '4 Real' but were not allowed to cause it had a numeral at the begining of the name. But they were fighting it. In the interview they were saying how their next kids were gonna be called '4 Ever' & '4 Sure'. Now I know you always get teased at school one way or the other but why would you want to set your kids up for it. As a parent don't you want to try & make it not happen at all. I think its cruel to do that to innocent children.

I have one of the most common names ever - Sarah - and I'm always having to spell it out over here. Even back home I had to make sure people put the 'h' on the end Having to spell my name out is no big deal I reckon, but names like Sex Fruit and 4 Real are just a bit .. well .. mean IMO!

I've seen some crackers over here in Asia though. Plenty of Twinkies and Wincys (like the spider!) and Pinkies ... and a friend had a GIRL called Stiffy in one of her classes at school Then there's the girl in my friend's office called German Man (German is her "English" name, Man is her surname)

There was actually an article in last Sunday's paper about "weird" names and why people have them. Not all of them over here are their parents' choice - one guy changed his name to Purpink by deed poll!

Hehe .. sorry to go on! Oh, I could write a book about the names I've come across .....

Yup there was a kid in gisborne going to be called "Triple M" or Mighty Mongrel Mob, there is also a guy "I Am" and a lady "Eve Holy Ghost God" all living in gisborne, and i taught a twin called "Kaos"

I even got told that "Eden" was a very unusual name

But i think its cruel naming a child an awful name (although in some weird way i do like the name Apple! )
