Plunket seem to place a lot of importance on ensuring we give our kids meat. But how many of us ACTUALLY stress over whether they are eating it or not?
Lucas has never been a meat eater, he wasn't phased by the Aria Farm beef and lamb chips, chicken & fish aren't options ...he just turns his nose up at any form of meat (incl sausages and beef patties etc) EXCEPT he used to eat the baby food cans that were 'lambs fry' and the veges mixed with beef. So not really a meat eater at all here.
At our last plunket check the nurse blasted me for not TRYING harder, *ahem* excuse me, what about all these kids that are raised in vegetarian households or where it is part of a culture?
I certainly don't stress about it, but I'm wondering how many other mummies have kids that aren't interested in it either?

JOsh doesn't eat much meat. All I can get into him is processed stuff like sausages and luncheon. I'm not too worried about the meat factor just the iron factor from me.

Yeah Becks I do worry about the iron factor a little too, Lucas eats a lot of marmite though. I'm sure if he was iron deficiant I'd be able to tell!?!?!

Steph, Keziah was primarily vegetarian until yesterday (living mainly on Pumpkin, Kumara, Carrots, Broccoli & Cauliflower)... she ALWAYS gagged and pushed the spoon away when I put any type of meat near her mouth LOL.. but now she kinda likes it, with little protest but I'm not going to force it upon her (like eating it every day) Maybe 3 times a week?

All the things you've mentioned aren't real meat though lol
Those beef chips are disgusting! I tried them when my daughter was around 1...yuk!
My girl wasn't interested in eating meat until she was over one.
I used to make her spinach and feta omelettes instead. Maybe you could try that for the iron?
What about something like schnitzel instead (you could crumb it yourself) and cut it into little pieces? That is a favourite here

Alyssa has only in recent months started eating red meat, as in real steak and not just processed stuff. I think even then she'll only eat it if it's a bit pink and not well done. She has always eaten chicken though.
Still no veges at all apart from potatoes... I think that has always worried me more than when she didn't eat red meat.

Yeah I know the 'meats' I mentioned aren't REAL meat, I was meaning real meat too though
We seem to have an issue with chewing here though (and no back teeth except 1 molar) so I'm guessing that could be another factor working against us when it comes to eating meats.

Ashleigh has generally been pretty good with her meat. She has been anaemic since birth and I weaned her off her iron meds when she was around 10 months so I try hard to make sure she has lots of meat. But in saying that, it is generally the first thing she will go for on her plate (unless there are chips or something lol) Have you tried cassaroling some blade steak or something until it is really really tender? Ash also had issues before she got her teeth so all meat had to be tender. Even now she can still have issues with some. Or corned beef done in the crockpot is a fav here - we had it for dinner tonight

My boy seems to love meat. Mind you, he's never had puree, only meat in the same form we'd eat it (roast, lamb rack, etc) as he feeds himself.

Steph, Michaela went through a stage of a few months where she wasn't eating meat, and for ages until she mastered her spoon she'd only eat finger food so her dinners consisted mainly of raw chopped veges and cheese. I was really worried about it but posted here in the toddler section and felt a lot better after the responses.
I stopped offering her meat every night, she got offered it twice a week (on weekends) and she actually started eating it - you should have seen DH and I celebrate!
If he doesn't eat meat it's not a biggie, I think most vegetarians would disagree with plunkets view that meat is necessary.

Neosha isn;t a big meat eater so I stick to what she likes, sausages, mince, chicken and then do them heaps of different ways. I find she really doesnt like eating it because its hard to chew so I cut it up really small to make it easier. \
I try to make sure she eats it though just for the iron side of things. I'm sure there are good substitutes for meat if they completely refuse it?

As you know Elle is Miss fussy pants with eating. However, 2 nights in a row she ate some beef casserole which was amazing. She certainly won't eat pieces of meat, sausages, chicken, chicken nuggets etc. I usually get iron in via egg and formula. Sadly she isn't into veges either but will eat a carrot stick a day
I hide grated courgette and carrot in things just so I can get some veges in!

My older two girls aren't big on meat. They love chicken, fish fingers and most of all sausages. But if I give them mince, lamb or steak, they barely touch it! Even if I chop it really little! I do think it's a texture issue though.
Kryssi, however, at 6mos old refused to eat anything that did not contain any form of meat. I didn't know what she was on about at first, thought I had the art of feeding solids mastered at baby #3! So she will eat mince and all that and loves chicken and sausages too.
Some kids are just fussy!! But I try not to worry too much, I figure once all their teeth are through and they are hungry enough, I won't be able to stop 'em!

I just thought from your examples that you'd only tried him on those things.
It did take a few months after she was one until she was actually interested in meat. At the time I was worried about iron, but she wasn't anemic.
I think that I gave up after a while and then suddenly she was interested!

Yup I have tried him on a variety of 'real' meats (lamb, beef, mince etc), he can't chew them and after one or two licks he throws it. Which is basically what he does with any food he doesn't like, lick ....biff!

Sienna eats what she's given but won't eat chicken.

Erin loves meat, and especially a good steak - but her favorite at the moment is fresh salmon fillet! She has always eaten it, and at the moment even likes it more than the sides - she'll usually scoff the meat first and have a nibble at the veges then that's it.

At the mo he will eat anything put in front of him.
Red meat he is learning to eat. (i don't eat it) he has moments where he will eat it till it is no long legible.....and comes and gives it to me, or you wouldn't even think he has chewed it and swallows...
He will eat some processed meat, salami and beer sticks. We don't give him sassages because of the suplhite in it and his asthma.
White meat is not a problem. LOL tonight I was cooking dinner he goes "Chicken dinner night p l e a s e mummy"
He was in luck as that was what was on the menu a throw together of chicken and veges

she has only just started eating meat again tho
as she went thru a " does that come from a pig?? . . . cow, sheep, lamb, bird" she even managed to put almost an entire restaurant off their meals 1 night by saying "did that come from a cute baby lamb, its mummy will be sad"

Daniel eats meat. He had pasta and meatballs tonight and gobbled it down.
If he didn't want it I wouldn't make a big deal out of it but getting iron into them is really important for their growing brain.
I rarely ate meat as a bubba. Mum gave up at 2 and I haven't eaten any meat since.

Charlotte doesn't eat much meat, mainly chicken and fish but she loves schnitzel so have started making more beef schnitzel. She also adores lasanga (probably cause of the cheese on it).

EXACTLY! Lucas is happy, healthy and growing beautifully (totally off the charts for his weight) and has only ever had the 'sniffles' for half a day. I don't believe he 'needs' meat, iron is in other foods. As long as you offer them a varied diet with a selection of foods from all other food groups you're doing the best you can to give them a good start

Gina loves mince - things like
- stir-fry veggies, noodles & mince
- little meatballs with potato mash/baked potato fries
- mini shepards pies
- pasta bake with mince & pasta & cheese
She'll also eat cold meats ie chicken breast on sandwich; loooves slow cooked casseroles with either pork/chicken/beef or lamb. Couscous with frankfurters. Toast with egg.
Just giving you ideas really - I too wouldn't worry about it much as he's happy & healthy.

McKayla is not a big meat eater as such but getting better at it. She likes chicken but it has to be a thigh piece. No drumsticks what so ever and dont take it off the bone. If she doesnt eat it in her plate I put it in her Dad's plate and when he comes home she steals it back.
She only recently started eating steak and that is when I cut it into thin strips. She however always always ate sirloin (mmm expensive taste). She loves sausuges but I really want to rather start making my own. Way too much crap in the store ones for my liking. She didnt wanted to eat mince when little until she tasted my lasagne. Now she will eat it if it is made like the lasagne mince. She eats meatload and meat balls however.
She doesnt eat burgers unless it is done the healthy way (Yay). She likes crumbed chicken but you have to do it yourself.
She just loves fish and always had so when she goes through a stage of not eating any meat I just get fish.
She doesnt eat lamb tjops as such. She rarely will try pork as such. (My FIL only eats pork so I stocked up on it for his supposed visit just for him not to come over and us to have to eat all of that.)
What else is there? She likes ham and bacon and smoked salmon is still the favourite. She will throw a huge tantrum if we go past it in the shop and dont get it. She will actually be willing to throw out any sweets we already bought to get it.
I was worried about iron just due to her being pale. (which is normal as she is exactly how I was) But got fed up with everyone saying it is due to not eating meat although everytime a test is done her levels cant be more perfect. Go figure.

gawd Ella loves her veges...so NOT my child - I gag as I watch her eat brocoli etc...
She is not HUGE on meat but will now eat a meat patty at burger king (i wont let her touch a McDs one!), and kebab type meat as well as sausages and she loves mince - esp lasagne. She also eats chicken and had her first KFC bites off mine the other day without repercussions IYKWIM!
I did make a HUGE HUGE HUGE mistake in letting her try my salmon...fresh expensive salmon slices...so not good - she LOVES it now. and last nite she discovered she loves squid rings from that fish place in the mall....along with RIce, fries and fish...quite an eclectic dinner!

DD#1 Never used to eat meat. She hated the oureed meat and veges and when she was finally able to eat finger food I think she found it too tough.
She always had realy low iron so was forever trying to find ways to get it up. Shed have marmite on toast but never any veges.
She eventually started eating meatballs and loved marinated lamb. You wouldnt believe it now that she was ever a fussy eater as she eats almost anything theese days, loves her meat (especially fancy stuff like veal and salmon) and eats heaps of veges too.
I think its something they get better with as they get older. As long as they are happy and healthy I wouldn't worry.

Parenting 101, never tell the Plunket Nurse the truth about what you are feeding your child nutritionally or they will slay you as a BAD MUMMY!
I always lie my arse off (Olivia is bonnie) and get that beloved "Well you obviously know what your doing" pat on the back My child eats meat about 2 or 3 times a week, I'm happy with that And since I'm her Mumma, that's all that matters

Leah will normally eat bacon, sausages, mince (made up as lasange) fish sometimes. On occasion she will have casseroled meat,or chicken. I can only try her with meat about 3 times a week. She then will only eat veges about 3 times a week as well, so it normally goes 1 night something meaty, the next something vege and so on. On off nights I normally do scrambled egg with little roast veges. I tend not to worry about it now ( it has taken me months to be able to say that!!) as she is still putting on weight and has loads of energy and she eats heaps of fruit so I figure shes fine. And most of all she is happy i'm not trying to shove stuff she doesn't want down her!
As a baby she wouldn't have any of the jars of meat at all, I had to make my own stuff, she would only have a few of the fruit ones, I don't think she had the lambs fry one ever. (i bought it, she just wouldn't eat it, although neither would I its gross!!)

You could try those Watties sachets that are meat and sauce for 9mths+ if you want to get a little meat in them. I add it to mashed potato or veges so I know even if Jake doesn't eat that many serves of meat a week he is still at least getting a small amount. And I think they have iron added too which is a bonus.
Jake will eat some meats but he has tiny serves -- I figure he is eating a heap of veges and fruit each meal, plus a small amount of meat a few times a week, so he is probably getting enough nutrients. And when he has more teeth I'm sure he will be able to consume more meat.
