Hi I just have a quick question about temperatures. Charlotte ( nearly 2 1/2) seems to be getting a cold (runny nose,watery eyes- classic cold symptoms for her) but she has been quite flushed looking today so took her temp round 2pm and it was 38 it is now 38.4.
I have given her pamol and she is pretty happy, still racing around so I am not super concerned but was just wondering what temp do you actually consider going to the doctor? The reason I am actually asking was as I took her temp I happened to look at the back of the plunket book and it said 38.3 you should be seeking medical help?? Is this really more for babies?? For me the "must see a doctor now" is 39, but if it's 38+ I go by the situation - what symptoms they have, how happy they are, whether they're taking fluids and whether the temp goes down with pamol. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

Usually over 38 I would take them to the dr on a Friday (so as to beat the after hours stuff on the weekends). I definitely go at 39 degrees. It sounds like you've done the best by giving her Pamol and keeping your eye on her. She's probably got what everyone else in NZ (!!!) has lately and you'll have to watch for signs of ear infections, most of all. ------------- |

I tend to go by how Ella is acting and if the temp goes down with pamol. Earlier this week Ella had a temp of 39.5 but after a dose of pamol 1/2 hr later it was almost back to normal and it didn't stop her from racing around the house. I'm the same as most of the others. 39+ and not coming down significantly with pamol is straight to the Dr.
38.5 and over, combined with being miserable is also Dr. 38.5 and under is close monitoring and if it lasts more than 2-3 days, off to Dr. ETA: My kids seem to start off most bugs with high fevers so we tend to monitor and go by the accompanying symptoms more than just the fever. I think the key thing (as others have said) is that it comes down with pamol. A couple of weeks ago, I phoned healthline near midnight when A had a temp of 39.6 (under her arm) and they said this was "manageable" if we stripped her off and gave pamol etc. I rang plunketline for a 2nd opinion and they also didn't tell me to rush to hosp or anything. Both nurses I spoke to just said it was the bodies way of dealing with the bug. They also said not to worry if she had a fit. Still scarey, but it came down with pamol. Thanks everyone!! I ended up riniging healthline to check and they basically said what you have all told me!! She seems fine again today temp still round 38 and nose is running but other than that she is okay.
We are very lucky she doesn't get sick very often so when she is we tend to worry!! She has just started at preschool so I guess we will see a few bugs come our way until her immunity gets higher! Thanks again, you can always rely on OhBaby ladies  ------------- http://lilypie.com">
