Sorry another question re: tonsils.
I've been given my date for surgery, Next Thursday morning (YAY!) ...the surgeon is lovely, had my consult with him today. The thing thats bugging me now - he was asking about my symptoms etc and he kept focusing on my Ears - Do you have any ear ache or problems with your ears? he kept asking, and feeling rather put on the spot I answered 'No, not that I can think of ...if I have, it has never been much of an issue'. He actually asked several times and I didn't think anything of it - is there any specific reason he would have asked? Does ear ache have something to do with them removing your adenoids at the same time? Totally bizarre and probably mind over matter, but I walk out to the car and the whole way home I had chronic ear ache, or so it seemed. I got back home and felt really ill and now I can't help but wonder why the heck he was asking? I do have a lot of trouble hearing usually, according to my family I talk loud lmao. But coming to think of it I have had a few problems with my ears, never would have connected it to my tonsillitis though? Should I ring him and mention it? Can someone please shed some light on the importance of that question re:ears? Just wondering if its going to make a difference to the surgery. If I ring him today he will think I'm just saying it because he asked  ------------- Single Mum to a darling wee boy of 3 years :) |

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but your ear gene is really close to your throat gene and it can cross over a bit in some people. These people sometimes cough when they are cleaning their ears. I know nothing more than that useless fact so probably not a lot of help.
It probably wouldn't hurt to ring him and just let him know. |

Your tonsillis interact with your ears I think. I know when Andrew went into have his grommets put back in the dr took his tonsillis out at the same time just to be safe (he had been having the odd throat infection as well), and the adnoids. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

Yes, the ears and throat are closely linked (by the Eustachian tube). It may be he was asking about your ears to find out if you also had ear infections, in which case they may suction/drain your ears at the same time. It shouldn't have any bearing on your tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy though, they wouldn't cancel it because of that.

So would I be getting a tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy automatically? He didn't actually go into much detail, a fast 10 min consult and $180 later I'm still lacking many details !
I'm concerned that the ear question might have bearing on whether I get an adenoidectomy or not - in which case I'd hate to think that I go in there for the operation and not have everything done that should be ....if that makes sense? ------------- Single Mum to a darling wee boy of 3 years :) |

I couldn't say!!! You'd really have to ask your specialist exactly what they plan to do during surgery, maybe call and find out? All I can say is if they are planning a tonsillectomy and an adenoidectomy, they are likely to go ahead with this even if you have ear infections. HTH and good luck.

sore throats and ear aches are generally linked i use to go to the doc about ear pain and be told my ears are fine but my throat is inflamed. I had adnoids out when i was about 6 and tonsils out about 22 i think -------------

Yes, most specialists that 'play' with the throat, 'play' with the ears and nose also because they are all linked.. hence the reason when your ears are blocked and you swallow, they generally clear and if you have a blocked nose and sniff the yuck back (sorry, tmi) it can lead to a throat infection!! -------------

Well yeah my surgeon is a head, neck, throat and nasal specialist lol! But I had heard that adenoids usually get taken out alongside the tonsils hence why i was wondering if his questions re: sore ears would change the procedure from being just tonsils to both. 
Have emailed him, will follow up with phone call int he morning so i can get my pre-approval from insurance company. Woohoo can't wait to finally be able to breath properly again! ------------- Single Mum to a darling wee boy of 3 years :) |

Good luck with it all! tonsils and adenoids are linked to ear infections - I had all mine out to stop recurrent ear infections when I was a kid. So it's probably pay to give him a ring and ask why he needed to know and update him on what your thoughts are about it. Bring on the jelly and icecream!! ------------- Andie |
