Hey ladies, I was wondering if any of you have been to Scrummie Mummies?? What did you think of it? Anything you really liked and/or disliked? I never got a chance to go there before it got closed down and i'm thinking of taking it over. We used to have our meets there, its just too small. We used to meet at the table next to the indoor play area and it just wasnt very practical for mums with prams as you can only have a couple before they just get in the way. I will be honest!
It was really poor - went there about 3 times and hated it everytime! The layout is crap, there is no room for prams/carseats etc, service was average as was the hotdrinks and food. Shop area was completely overpriced. Its too long and narrow and with the play area down one end and only one table near it, it doesn't make for a relaxing coffee. Great concept but wrong building for it. You more want a playarea in the middle with tables all round the outside and good space between the tables for highchairs/pushchairs etc. Thats just my opinion though  -------------

I second what Peanut said - really bad layout, didn't mind the food but quite pricey for what you get, crap service. Definitely not good when you have lots of little babies as the other kids knock past the prams/carseats to get to the playground. Plus its so noisey with the train there, I don't mind trains but geez they're pretty frequent and you can't exactly escape them.
The layout of somewhere likes friends cafe is a lot better and practical for parents. |

Yeah I second what the other ladies have said, it's just not practical for pushchairs, I found it difficult enough with having Spencer in the carseat. The shop was ridiculously priced. I didn't mind the food or coffee etc but the service wasn't really up to scratch. Somewhere the size and shape of friends would be much better for it, the only sucky thing about friends is the complete lack of parking. -------------

I also hated how scrummy mummies didn't have a door on the kitchen and the drinks fridge was really easy for kids to open. It was really easy for the kids to get into everything.
Friends has a few parks next door and there always seems to be enough when we go. |

What i didnt understand when i had a look was the fact the tables were not layout out in a practical manner i dont think i would of gone there. The disabled ramp comes up to the restaurant doors but that is then cut off by the tables no wheel chairs would be able to get in let alone prams so im looking at making that way more practical, also didnt like there version of a play area it looked sorry but cheap and nasty i mean kids love colour not plain cream and brown there is alot of potential what we are looking at is making the seating more practical, making the play area a proper play area, turning the shop piece into a place for small children to they can get away but also thinking about a partition in there to turn one piece into a nursery with sound proofing without taking away the historic feel. I was amazed at how they didnt utilize the out side area there was no playground for kids in the summer time, we dont like the bar as i'm looking to make it a cafe and family place not a bar and restaurant. Another down side i think is the fact they dont have many display cabinets instead that big bar and other counter are taking up quite a bit of space hmm i'm thinking on it. I came up with a plan and strategy but all in all i have to think about if it really will be worth it as obviously the other owners have given it a bad name.
One big question, How did you order?? It's been bugging us as i noticed there is no menu board over the bar? or by the other counter area? It didnt look much like a cafe to me. The display cabinet they had was small so either i figure they didnt make a decent range of food or it was a order and wait scheme hmm so yes thinking thinking thinking. ------------- http://www.playtimemagic.co.nz - Playtime Magic - "Little minds can do great things"

Is that the one near Northlands Mall? I didn't realise it had closed down.
I never made it there myself, well acually we were supposed to have a met up there but when we arrived we found out they weren't open on Mondays (or Tuesdays) so we just had to go to a cafe in the mall. |

They had hand out menus, and came to you and you place and order that was delivered to you.
or You got a menu and went up and ordered and they brought it to you. Can't remember which but it was one or the other 
If you are looking at doing so many changes to it why not look for a better space and start from the beginning - takeover another cafe so you don't have too much of an outlay but one that will work better and then change the name to whatever. Just a thought! -------------

I didnt find it very child friendly at all to be honest. If the kids wanted to go outside and play but you were sitting inside you had to go out and supervise and there fore miss catching up with everyone and while the play area was ok it was at the end of the room so if your child wanted something you were up and down all the time. Both my kids hated being shut in there and wouldnt just go and play so sat at the tables most of the time adn there just isnt enough room for them at the tables and no where else for them to play. It was to seperated so you couldnt see the kids if they went for a wander. It just wasnt a very relaxing childfriendly atmosphere but to be honest im not sure its the right place for a cafe aimed at being child friendly. It would probalby be better just as a cafe/restaurant like it used to be. I know i dreaded going there when I knew thats where the meet ups were. |
