Ok so I am a serial lurker who does not post much but I need to post this.

Please Please make sure when you give your little ones apples that you peal of all of the Skin - a few seconds extra work can prevent a tragedy.

There is a little Boy 14 months from Te Awamutu who is in hospital in starship on life support as he choked on an apple, the apple was well chewed but doctors found the peal on his lungs.

For all of those out there who are religious please have this little boy in your prayers.

This has really touched a cord with me and I have been following this little boys progress on the TM parenting site

I have been thinking about wee Kory since it happened.
Such a sad sad accident. Hopefully WHEN he gets through this there will be minimal brain damage.

That sounds awful. Poor boy and his family.

Was this in the news or anything? I have tried finding a news story, but can't see anything about it. I assume it is a horrible random situation cause otherwise we surely would all be warned about it if it is a regular occurance?

Just went over for a quick peek and they are going to try and wake Kory up tomorrow. They need to do some more test.

Ok, only found one very short news story for anyone like me who didn't know about it.
http://www.stuff.co.nz/waikatotimes/4665291a6579.html - Linky

From reading the comments in the TM thread some were updating that he had a seizure and it wasn't related to choking on an apple? I'm just curious about this aspect of it as I have always been a bit paranoid about choking.

Just from what I have read on TM - Kory was a day care and choked on apple - at first they thought this was not the case and that it was a seizure but now have found apple peal on his lungs indicating this was what he choked on

Please lil man pull through for your Mummy and daddy.

The best way to follow this progress is through TM - Parenting PRAYERS FOR KBKMUM PLEASE

i read through the whole thread on TM even though i knew the outcome......i felt sick and guilty because while we were so happy on jack's birthday, another family was saying goodbye to their wee man

i'm so paranoid about the kids eating apples now...would like to know if that was the cause of his passing or if kory had a medical condition they didn't know about

From the http://www.stuff.co.nz/4673643a11.html - full news story:

"It could have been anything, an apple, banana, crackers it could have happened at home," Mrs Downie-Boyte said.

Sounds like it was just a tragic random thing where the food item just happened to be an apple.. I imagine if they thought it was linked to something else they would have mentioned it there, what with all the other concerned parents who are also curious about it?

I agree Pepsi, it must have just been one of those accidents that could have been caused by anything. It's very sad but there's really no way that it could have been prevented. Well...unless they didn't feed him at all

Thanks for that link, It is so sad that it could of been anything at any time. My FIL is paranoid about the boys and their eating as he has seen so many children come into the hospital as a result of choking.

Still sad thou. And I feel for the daycare staff and the other children there, try explaining to them that Kory isn't coming back

There is an article on this wee little man in this weeks NZ Woman's Weekly, very sad story and he was such a handsome little fella. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this hard time.

BTW the article says it was a piece of peeled apple he choked on, not apple peel. Really I think it boils down to being a freak accident, there are choking hazards with most foods we offer our children. Just have to be very vigilant and always supervised when eating.

RIP Kory xx

Yeah but he was supervised while eating which makes it more of a freak accident! Poor wee lad!
