Hi there, I was just wondering if anyone has experienced their waters breaking in early pregnancy?
I've heard that if this happens that your bag can actually reseal themselves. Does the leak resemble a thin clear slimy watery discharge? or is it just like when your waters break at full term?

I have no idea what it looks like but Mum's waters broke at 27 weeks with my youngest brother and she was kept in hospital for 10 weeks on strict bedrest coz like you say they sac can reseal. She also had to have ventolin to stop contractions starting and prophylactic antibiotics to prevent infection. It must have been a giant PITA for her spending so long in hospital but ultimately it was worth it when he was delivered at 37 weeks healthy as.

Mumof72b - are you having what I had a few weeks ago where I was having heavy watery discharge? It lasted for like couple of weeks and now it has stopped! I spoke to my MW and she said that its just discharge but mine was really watery.
I really dont know what water looks/smells like as my water was broken with DD....but of it is similar to what I had I think its just heavy discharge and it should stop soon!

I've been told amnio fluid has a distinctive smell but I never noticed it with any of my girls, mind you I had my waters broken every time.

yeah mine smelt sort of like hay.
I had a small leak at 24weeks with my little man so had to rest up for a few days but was allowed to do so at home (I live close to hospital). They can definately reseal but it also depends on where the little whole occurs. For me it was at the top so it didn't leak much and sealed quickly.

midwife took me into hospital after i had a little bit of bleeding and the did the stick test, i just heard an 'oh' and said what does that mean and they told me my waters had broken and were leaking, i remember saying when did that happen and they said we were about to ask you the same thing!
Within 2 hours i found out my waters had broken, I wasnt allowed to leave the hospital at all...even to go and get clothes.... and Kobe had a cleft.....was pretty full on two hours!

Glad it wasn't your waters mum2bof7
I had a leak at 34 + 6, it felt like more than just discharge when it came out and when I went to the loo and checked there was a definite smell (like semen) and it was totally clear rather than coloured like normal discharge. Back up midwife put me on bedrest and said that my normal midwife would probably have the hospital check me out the next day (it was a sunday) but that I might also go into labour because of it anytime in the next 24 hours, but that anything past 34 weeks they don't try to stop anyway. 12 hours after the original leak I started getting contraction, needed the loo a bit quick and whilst on it my waters broke completely. Spencer actually wasn't born for another 3 weeks though as my contractions stopped, they couldn't really explain why. I spent that time in hospital as my waters were still leaking and he was breech and I would start labouring but not get to active labour and they wanted me to go as long as poss before getting him out.
Oh and they did that stick test on me and it was negative but an ultrasound scan showed that all that was left of the waters was the hindwaters.

Yep, pretty much like wees but out of the wrong hole and it would leak out when I changed position or when bubs was moving around rather than just leaking out randomly like cm.

Amniotic fluid has a def smell, it is a sweet smell, my waters broke at 24 weeks with dd and I too was not allowed to leave the hospital was on bed rest for a week, and they replenished back to a safe amount around her sac, my broke with a gush then leaked, the same thing happened again at 28 weeks and at 30 weeks I bleed and she was delivered (My story is under prem births in the community section I think along with kellys) And just because your waters break you do not nessarily go into labour I did not either time and was given steroids to help her lungs, heart etc just in case it was pretty scary...... and I'm praying it does not happen again with this one there was no known reason for it to happen and it is quite common.

Hi girls
Very interesting stories, Im glad it was'nt my waters, Im more embarrased than anything else.
Nictoddie does your MW think you have a higher chance of your waters breaking early with bubs now? or is it really just a random thing that can happen?

Mine told me that it is a possibility this time as they don't know what caused it last time so its possible the same problem is here this time (if that makes sense), but the likelihood is that it was just random and won't happen again, same as hopefully this one won't be breech. Although I have been told that with my case history I will be monitored closely towards the end.
My waters got back up to normal levels as well but they never stopped leaking altogether. They weren't sure why my labour kept stopping and starting either but said it could have been cos of the broken waters or poss his position annoying my uterus, and that also may or may not happen this time.

Mum had a perfectly normal pregnancy and birth with me, but the next three pregnancies she had PRM at 34, 35 and then 27 weeks. With the first two labour didn't establish so she was induced after 24 hours coz of the infection thing and they were born prem, but as I said in a previous post with my youngest bro they didn't induce, they left him in as long as they could.

No it is totally random , just because it happens once it may not happen again, when we were thinking about having another one last year which resulted in a mc we had a good chat to our gp and he said every pregnancy is a clean slate so fingers crossed, and like emma's mum because I had no infection or established labour I was left on bed rest until they replenished to a safe amount before I was allowed to go home, it was very scary and I'm praying I do not have this happen again, still got 1 and bit weeks till I hit hit the 24 week mark where my complications happened with miss m.

I was just closely monitored second time round but had a normal pregnancy and delivery (well apart from the gestational diabetes and all that) For me when my waters were leaking I noticed there was a lot of discharge but certainly not enough to make me think they could be leaking so I guess everyone is different.
