Hi ladies,
This is for those of you that have used an Advent or Medela breast pump (manual or electric). We are looking at getting one whilst we still have the double income and would like some feedback please. *manual or electric? *which is better for when you return to work and need to express there? *with electric did you find them really noisey? *is it uncomfortable? *with manual did you get "RSI" in yur hand from pumping for ages? I love my Medela mini electric! I can get 120mls out of one side at the moment if they're reasonably full.
It can be a bit noisy, that's the only drawback from having an electric as opposed to a manual pump. It can be uncomfortable if you forget to change the setting on it and start at too high a suction, feels like your nipples are being yanked off! But apart from that, it's fine, no more uncomfortable than breastfeeding. I've heard nothing but good things from other Medela mini electric users. The other bonus with Medela is that standard bottles fit the pump, whereas with the Avent you can only use the wide neck Avent bottles, so have to buy those which are a bit more expensive. You can always get a manual attachment for the electric pump so that you have the best of both worlds? I've been thinking of getting the manual pump attachment so that I can still express when I'm on the phone etc. -------------

i agree with pixeldust about the Medela mini electric, i am currently using it for Ella, and i agree with all pixeldust's comments.
Medela was recommended to me through the lactation consultants at the hospital, they use them at Chch Women's, but the bigger versions. Tried to steal it but thought they may have noticed  ------------- Proud mum to Ella born 11/02/06 http://www.baby-gaga.com/">

I bought (not used that much) advent ISI (?) Manual pump and it is actually quite good. you choose how much pressure you are going to put on your (poor) nipples and if you are full then expressing is easy.....I like it! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I have a medela manual and when I use it, it is great, it is easy to use and not uncomfortable. With the medela manual pump you will find some chemist that hire out the electric attatchment for a reasonable price. My mums friend lent a electric one when I was down home as I did not take mine with me and she wanted to babysit for a few hours, and I did find it to be a bit noisy and my dad made comments about milking the cows, because that is what it kind of sounds like. ------------- http://www.bump-and-beyond.com/">

I had the Medela Mini electric- I could express 350 (yes 350!) mls from each breast resonabley quickly. They aren't the most quiet things but no louder than the others.
The electric are sooo much better than the manual if you plan on expressing at work- they are quicker and easier to use. Its a little unusual feeling but I didn't find it uncomfortable. ------------- Jen, Charlotte 7 & Kate 3

I've got an Avent manual, and I used to get alot off. I first hired a hospital electric one, but I didn't get alot off with it? plus it hurt. I would like to try the new avent electric. i like the aven as all the bottles and cups and storage containers all fit together with lids, teats etc, so you can just use one system. ------------- The Honest Un PC Parent of 2, usually stuck in the naughty corner! :P |

Also look in the buy sell i got a medula mini electric for $50 still in the box and heaps of spare bottles.
How do some of u ladies get so much milk out? it took me a week to get 230mls, Jack drinks all my milk and if i express too much i have to give it to him cos there isn't enough left for him. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

| The avent ones are really nice. I have bought the new Isis IQ one. I had a Medela with the last baby and had a hard time with it. My friend lent me the Avent one and it was much more comfortable. |

The lady at the Baby Factory told me the Medela ones have been improved. I remember the one I had when Maya was first born and it was so hideous that I went out and bought the avent one. But the new Medela looks very similar to the Avent.
Also, the Medela doesn't have the same storage/feeding options as the Avent - the Avent one is an entire interchangeable system with all the products in the range, whereas the Medela one you have to use a diferent brand of bottle. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)
