Hi there,

I was just wondering if there was/anyone knew of any particular ways to increase our chances of having twins??

People may think Im a little nuts but we honestly, would really like to have twins!

DH and I have possible fertility issues so we may have to go the IVF route which I know can possibly increase chances of multiple births but if we don't is there anyway to increase our chances?

Neither of our family have any history of twins so I knwo its a long shot!

Any ideas will be appreciated! = )

TIA

Its usually a random thing when your body releases 2 eggs at once or if it splits later for identical twins, and some are more likely to do it than others because of genetics.

But IVF definitely does increase your chances for twins - I've been doing an assignment on it and the muliple birth rate has gone up quite a lot since IVF has become more widely used.

I think there's a supplement you can take (can't remember what it's called though) that encourages your chances of squeezing out multiple eggs.

I look after twins (I'm a nanny IRL) and their mother reckons it was the folic acid ... she said she was so bad at remembering to take it that she's sure some days she took 2 and that's why she ended up with twins

there are drugs in China that increase your chances, i saw a doco on it, cos your only allowed one child unless you have twins, there was a town who had something like an 80% twin birthrate. they all took these herbal things that the local grocer sold!

My partner for some crazy reason wants to have twins!!....since Kahtrell is starting his terrible twos stage I'm thinking one child is enough!! lol jokes I can't wait to have more. Interesting that you can help your chances of conceiving twins. Don't know how I would deal with twins though....unless for some magical reason they have identical sleep, eat, and poop patterns!.

I think I would love twins next time too. I have twins in my family (my aunty and uncle are twins) so I have a chance of having them.

I think having twins as our first would be fabulous, I wouldn't know any different so I think that is the best way we could do it.

Its a personal decision and both DH and I feel very comfortable and would feel very blessed should we fall pregnant with twins.

Thank you to those who have given your ideas, I will keep them in mind = )

Anyone else know of any???

I also remember seeing a doco about the families in China taking something which increased their chances of a twin pregnancy...not sure what it is though!
Good luck

Wait till your older and try then. We've just recently found out we are pregnant with twins and I am 41 (no twins on either side of the family). Of course, DH thinks it was his sperm so said he could send some up to you if you were keen (I said no).

LOL at your DH Linda.  My DH decided awhile ago he wants twins too and told me that all we need to do is have sex a couple of times a day to increase chances.  Although I'm happy to do extra BDing I did tell him that twins conception is to do with eggs (how many you release and whether they split).

Sorry, but you really must be mad! I have to laugh at people who say they'd love twins coz they have noooooo idea! Don't get me wrong, I love mine to bits, but they are damn hard work! Not to mention all the risks associated with a twin pregnancy, particularly for a primip (first time mother).

I don't know how I managed to conceive twins, ours are completely random, there are none on either side of the family, and ours are identical which isn't genetic. I do sometimes say that the Chinese massage man gave me twins tho lol coz the day before AF was due I had wicked back pain so went to one of those massage places in the mall and it turns out that would have been around the time the egg split to make two of them.

IVF has increased the rate of twins/higher order multiples but protocol with publicly funded cycles now is to only put one embryo back as there is a greatly increased chance of m/c and 3rd tri complications with a multiple pregnancy, so they prefer to put one embryo back and increase the chance of a succesful pregnancy. There are some doctors who will put two or more back on a private cycle, and there are some situations where they'll put two back on a public cycle, usually when the embryos are of a poorer quality as it increases the chance that one will take, but this isn't common practise.

LOL Emma - I was wondering when you'd pop in.

I used to think twinnies were just the bestest thing that could happen ever!

Man, I have looked after soooo many thru the unit, and yeah while they're twice the neat stuff, they truely are completely exhausting, harder preganancy higher risks and all that guuf too.

I'd say that if i ever would have wanted twins - I'd have wanted to thave them second so at least i could figure it all out with a singleton first. Cos 2 babies to deal with first time around - eeeeeek nooooooooooo way!

They really aren't all they're cracked up to be!

Thank you for your comments.

While I understand where some of you are coming from and may not want twins/triplets yourself, WE (My Husband & I) do and that is a personal decision.

I am not unaware of the hard work that twins require.
My now SINGLE, very young best friend has a 2 year old and 1 year old twins and I am with her lot and see the sturuggles she goes through. But I also see the pure joy she gets from her boys and on numerous occasions she has said she would love twins again, so it is possible to get by without ripping your hair out.

I'm not saying that is what you ladies are implying, I'm just saying that should we get pregnant with twins, we would deal with it, just as most of you ladies have/would.

Yes, I admit concerns for the pregnancy and the health of the babies would be our top priorty/concern, but this is just a huge 'what if'.

Its not as though we get to make the decision to have twins, so really this thread is for ideas on how to increase chances on conceiving twins not raising them.

Im sure if it happened I would be back here asking questions of all you fabulous ladies that have had twins, but until then I am just after ideas on TTC at the moment.

Thanks.

All the best with TTC Parki.

I'm sure any comments about not wanting twins were intended in a light hearted manner - mine certainly were.

We're thinking of a third child, and I would like to make it twins...
Any further info on those herbal remedies (names etc...)? They could have them at the homeopath's or the health store?

Well I can tell you I was doing items 1, 2, 4, 5, & 6 off that list on the other page and no twins here

I have to say that I would have been pleased to have twins coz after trying for 18 months it is scary to think of going that long again trying and only getting older at the same time. So I totally get where you are coming from Parki.

The only thing I reckon is that it would be hard if you had twins first then another one, coz the youngest one I bet would feel left out.

Not sure, but doesn't taking clomid increase chances of multiple births as that stimulates ovaries.

I think it would be hard having a singleton frist as they would have all the attention for so many years and then suddenly have TWO babies stealing all that attention

Sometimes I think it would be really interesting having twins and then I see mums chasing after their 2 littlies and I am relieved I only have one at a time. My hat goes off to all twin mummies, they really do an incredible job!

Yes that is true! I just imagined it from the younger siblings point of view, being left out of things, whereas older siblings are not so fussed, busy being 'growned up'.

But then that is me thinking from a third child point of view hehe....poor little third child!

I always thought twins were a "random thing", i dont think you can really increase your chance of having them, you either do or dont...

But good luck!

I too love the idea of twins - DH and I would be so happy to never have to TTC ever again!
First we just have to get pregnant with ANY baby!

Haha twins so run in my family! I want a set and DP goes white at the thought he didn't realise they were so prevalent in my family until we were talking about it and the thought that it might actually be a possibility had him freaked!! Poor guy
Good luck Parki!

Twins do tend to be random. I have identical twins in every generation of my family, on both my mum and dad's sides, whereas DH has none in his family. My specialist has commented that a few twin mums that have conceived twins after a miscarriage - but I wouldn't recommend that for anyone. Also a few twin mums I have heard of have been on progesterone supplements due to fertility/miscarriage problems....again, not an option I would recommend!! Unfortunately, I conceived both after a m/c, and I was on progesterone pessaries. I still NEVER thought I was having twins and you could have blown me over with a feather when I found out (there's actually a thread in the TTC threads about it, the day I found out....)

It's pretty much luck of the draw I guess. And the thought of two is terrifying by the way Especially the logistics of it all - two of everything, a car big enough for two carseats PLUS anything else you need (eg. any other people you need to take anywhere), double the nappies, double the feeding, double the washing....

Twins are fantastic fun! and not as hard work as most presume. The down side however is multiple pregnancy's are automatically classed as high risk there are so many things that can go wrong. Our bodies are horribly designed to carry one baby let alone 2! I would be stoked if I got another set of twins next time but if there actually was a choice I would never choose to be pregnant with twins. I've spoken to so many Mothers in another forum that have gotten to 5 or 6 months then gone into labor resulting in losing one or both babies. I never realized how risky this type of pregnancy was until I was faced with all the what ifs.

Haha it is a good deal. My sister was 37 when she got pregnant with twins she was so stoked because she wanted more than one baby but had resigned herself to only having one pregnancy.

Ha ha well it seems a million years ago that I started this thread & is completely irrelevant now!

My chances of conceiving twins is damn near impossible as they will only be implanting one egg during ourIVF treatment!

Good luck to those who are TTC twins though
