It depends on why you are going as to "what they do"

Ive seen one for various reasons ...

When I competed (bodybuilding) they planned my food intake leading up to the competition and the depletion and carb loading phases.

I also used one for general weight loss (for normal people) as I tended to go onto a "bodybuilders diet" whenever I wanted to drop a few kgs and I wanted a more varied diet.

I did nutrition papers as part of my Personal Training papers .. but I like to get some "backup" support as its easier if someone else tells me what to do lol

Cost varies hugely depending on who you see, I would ring around.

I saw one when I was diagnosed with coeliacs disease to discuss the dietary changes I needed to make.  It was free for me because it's a medical condition and I can go back whenever I want for another free appointment.

Basically she just did a bit of research and told me what I can and can't eat and gave me suggestions for different meals and a few recipes.

My wife and I went to one - best money we ever spent. They teach you everything you ever needed to know about food, and I'm now strongly of the opinion it should all be taught in schools. Things like what foods contain protein, what contain carbohydrate, how much of each to eat at each meal etc.

Best money I ever spent. From memory it was about $60 per half hour session, and it took a good 6 or 8 sessions before we were comfortable to carry on without...
