Lately Caden has started SCREAMING when I try to burp him! He goes all ridgid and "stands up" and flails around, so I figured he had bad wind, so i will do my best to rub his back etc which is so hard when he wont stay still but he wont burp or anything half the time!
So then i thought ok maybe he doesnt want to be burped, so i will start giving him his bottle again and he will stop crying and suck but then he will fuss again and not suck properly, so i try to burp him again and then the whole process starts again! its so tiring! Ive also tried not giving him the bottle once he starts fussing/screaming etc cos i thought maybe he isnt hungry, but he crys and roots around for the teat! Do you think it could be colic? Im pretty sure he suffers from it some nights, but he does this EVERY feed(maybe bar one or two if Im lucky). Im at a loss as to what to do! He seems happy as larry "after" he has finished his bottle though and he will do some burps, its just during the feed that we are haveing problems. ------------- |

Definitely not colic, colic is very specific in that it occurs over one set period during the day and then the rest of the time bubs is settled and not screaming.
Does he need to be burped in the middle of a feed? What happens if you don't stop the feed to burp him? Maybe that's what he's grumpy about - he wants to keep feeding and not stop for a burp. The gremlins never seemed to need winding mid feed, but Chiara does for sure. Have you tried burping him over your shoulder and patting his back? I find that works quite well. Or lying him across your knees on his tummy? Not sure if you've tried it already but you can also add Infacol to his bottles to help bring the wind up. The only other thing I can think of is the size/flow of the teat but I don't think that would be causing it? Worth looking at tho if all else fails. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

Amy HATED to be taken off the bottle during a feed, so I gave up on that idea fairly quickly!! Only MIL persisted with the burp in the middle. I found that she was much happier when we let her decide when to have a burp break 
Infacol does work well - you usually get burps that most rugby teams would be proud of  .My MW described it as bringing all the little bits of air in the tummy together into one big bit of air that is easier to get out.-------------

Well that was a lot easier!
He has the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature bottles so i got some number 2 teats and he was way happier with that, he still didnt want to be burped during the feed so I just let him drink and then burped him once he didnt want anymore and he did a few burps and a spill and now he is happy as hiccuping in his bouncer. Oh and i burped him on my shoulder this time and he seemd to like that much better. The reason why i would burp him on my knee was cos he would headbutt my while I was trying to burp him on my shoulder lol, but now that he has the bigger teat size and I let him drink till her was done he was much more settled when I burped him. Glad he's happier, he could have been fussing cos the old teat was too small and he wasn't getting enough out of it and getting sh*tty with it.
Gabs will scream if you take the bottle away before she is ready. I still do a mid feed burp, but its usually when she decides to come off the teat herself. If you find it hard to get out bubbles I find that once I stop feeding Gabs if I keep her lying down and rub her tummy in a clockwise motion before sitting her up to be burped really helps. i think it helps to bring all the wind together. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Yeah when i gave caden his bottle this morning he pulled off the teat himself and lay there for a little bit all sleepy and I was rubbing his tummy and then sat him up to burp him and he burped right away(and powerchucke on me and the couch lol).

| I don't wind Ollie any more during a feed 'cause he was the same if I tried it! Now he drinks 200mls in one hit and will happily take himself off the teat if he needs it. Plunket told us we had to wind him during the feed but he is so much happier if we don't! |

My girls never liked burping mid-feed so I cut that out as well. Why do so many people say to do it then, if it's not right for so many babies?  ------------- |

Yeah caden has always hated it but I thought it was what you you were meant to do, but the last few feeds he was much happier and would take himself off the teat if he had wind of needed a break etc ------------- |

Andrew hated burping in the middle of a feed, but Josh did very well with it. All children a different. I am glad you have worked it out Sheena. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |
