that at 5 weeks your hCG was low (result today 2160 - Dr not happy) and you had brown-sish discharge (TMI sorry!) and went on to have a healthy baby...
Or perhaps someone needs to bring me down to earth and confirm my worst fears.
Although I'm a firm believer in nature taking its course this is still quite upseting...

Oh hun. I have no experience of this but couldn't read and not post. I have heard stories like this that have a happy ending - I will be praying that yours is one of them.

I don't have any experience either but wishing you all the best!!
I actually think that there has been a similar thread in here relatively recently but can't remember who/what exactly it was as I don't spend too much time in here.

Esther hun I hope its just bubs slowly getting comfortable!!!

I had a mc at 7w3d. I started bleeding (brown discharge) but only there when I wiped (sorry TMI). Had HCG levels done and they came back as:

7w3d - 6600
7w5d - 8000
8w2d - 8800
8w4d - 9000
8w5d - 6000 (had D&C)

Here is a http://www.pregnancy-guidelines.com/hcg-levels_2.html - linky for HCG levels. Its only a guide though so keep that in mind.

I am praying for a positive outcome for you

A stand alone hCG level isn't a good indicator of viability, I wish medical professionals would stop making comments like "oh, it's a bit low" coz there is a HUGE variation in what is normal and all it does is freak women out! At any given stage, the important thing is not the levels themselves but that they double every 24-48 hours for the first 6 weeks, then every 48-72 hours until around 10 weeks when they drop to a plateau and stay at that level for the duration.

When I had my first level done with Chiara it was 30-something and the nurse that gave me the result said "it's not very high" and wouldn't tell me the number, I gave her a right lecture once she told me what it was coz it was completely normal for 15dpo! And lil miss was most definitely OK, she's currently screaming her lungs out to prove it!

Sorry I've never had my HCG levels checked so I don't know, but brown discharge is nothing to worry about. Are you getting the HCG levels re-checked?

With this pregnancy at 5w1d my hcg was at 7360...but I was having serial testing too.
I also had brownish discharge up until about a week and a half ago and we have seen a heartbeat on 2 scans now.

With my last pregnancy which was a blighted ovum and ended in a d&c (was also doing serial testing), at 5w2d my levels were 1718.

As maya said, you really need to get more than one test done as you can tell from my 2 different pregnancies there was a vast difference.

Good luck :)

Oh hun, I'll be praying for you that the levels double over the next couple of days. I too think that's a bit harsh of the doc to say anything about it, until they have a few days worth how do they honestly know? Definitely a good opportunity to get a scan done though as they'll be able to see a heartbeat soon.

HI Everyone,
Thanks for your positive vibes, hugs and prayers.
Overnight everything *down there* seems to have stopped...so that's good.
Feeling a little under the weather today as well which I'm taking as a good sign.
Next blood test Thursday.
I'm really just hoping i have my dates wrong and that i'm not as preganant as I thought I was, this would explain the low hCG.
Anyhow, just sitting here letting nature take its course!
Thanks again!

My levels this pregnancy was low according to the nurses at my Docs office...Doc didnt seem tooo worried! As long at it went up with every test.

I also started to have brownish blood around the same time and I am 26 weeks today!

So dont worry about the first result, it could be that you are not yet 5 weeks but only 3 or 2 even. Wait and see what the result of the next bloods are...if it is going up then its all good!

Best of luck!

Ah E, I replied on your blog but have to say here too that brownish discharge isn't unusual and your levels aren't that low. Wait until you have the next blood test to compare with before freaking.

Hey sufergirl I never got my HCG levels done but I did have brown discharge on and off for about two weeks. I got a scan done at 6w1d because my nausea had gone also. I saw a heartbeat and two days later my vomiting was back. My bubs is fine as you can see and will be arriving next week. Fingers crossed for you

Hey E, any news yet? Hoping all is well.

Just read your blog - I have a tendency towards an incompetent cervix (bicornuate - somewhat heart-shaped) but didn't have any issues until later on. I hope if you do have issues that it is later on in pregnancy and they can be easily managed. They're really good at monitoring and managing things like that.

Anyway, hugs hun! Hope all is OK for you and wee bubs!

OK - update...levels today are 3,450 which is up, but not double.
Nurse at the surgery said come back Friday for some more...but certainly no wine tonight!
She thinks that the fact it's early days and that 1st lot were taken late monday night and these ones were early this morning that it's not bad news...but...well, you know...
Legs crossed!!!

Mine surely didnt dbl either I think from memory it was going up by like a 1000 every second day. I will try and find the chart that the labs use in NZ that actually shows how much it should go up by for it to be normal!

Looks good so far so stay relaxed!! I think its good news!!

How does this chart align you perfectly to your dates??
I used this chart to graph this pregnancy for 3 weeks, but don't know what your meaning.

I think what she's saying is that my dates (I thought I was 5 weeks on Monday) show that I pretty much sit on the 50th percentile. so at 5 weeks my reading was 2167, then 1.5 days later it was 3450, which follows the line. Spoke with Dr again this morning and he said come in again Friday, and he wants numbers between 5-7000.
So once again a waiting game!
Hope that I got that explaination right Roksana and that it makes sense Nefertiti.

Its just that I used that chart and it doesn't always go accurately with the line, so I dont agree when she says it aligned perfectly with your dates.

I am sure your numbers will be that high next time...

Fingers Crossed!

Nefertiti - Hmmm.....Not sure how you are looking at it..but I just used my eyes for Her and it seems along the 50% line...so looks good to me!! As for it being on the line exactly...I doubt that it will happen as the scale on the graph is not perfectly set up but gives you a idea of where it should be...and its good enough for me. Like I said....I was in the same boat when my numbers didnt dbl every second day and I started to panic when another MUM on here gave us this graph and I used it to see where I was at and I was 50% and I am 26 + weeks now.

Nikki - HA HA ...Thanks!! LOL

Hi. Never done this before. I had brown staining at 5 weeks. Didn't get any checks done then but at 6.5 weeks had red blood, levels about 5000 and no observable fetal pole, heartbeat etc, levels increased but didn't double over 3 days. My son is now a nearly 12 kg 17 month old. Don't lose hope until all tests are done.

Hi surfergirl. I had several blood tests to check my hcg levels during the first trimester because I had continuous bleeding - started with pink/brown spotting which gradually turned into heavy red bleeding, which didn't stop until 16 weeks. My blood tests were spaced 2 or 3 days apart to check that the levels were increasing. They don't necessarily have to double, just as long as the numbers keep going up. I'm sure your next bloods will come back with a higher hcg level - fingers crossed
