Hi - I've just fitted a capsule and base in my car. It can't fit in the middle as we have to put the front seats too far forward to fit it. It's now behind the passenger seat but this means that a passenger has to sit a long way forward (knees touching the dash!).
Does anyone else have this problem? Do you know if you have to have the capsule handle back while it's in the car?

Yeah we kinda had the same prob. I never put the capsule handle back and I jammed the seat up against the capsule giving more leg room in the front but I just got used to it, I figured if someone was tall they could sit in the back

Yes, the handle does have to be back as it acts as a buffer to stop the carseat jolting forwards (or backwards if your the baby) if you have to brake suddenly.
What make car do you have?? 2 or 4 door?

We were the same as Stacey, even with the rear facing car seat if DH was driving I would feel like I was sitting on the dashboard, but I got used to it. Now that Jack is forward facing I find having more room in the front seat very strange now!

Same here. I asked the OB car seat expert about it - here is the http://www.ohbaby.co.nz/OHbabyExperts.aspx?QID=129&ReturnUrl=%2fOHbabyExperts.aspx%3fpage%3dprevious%26ExpertId%3d11 - response .
We've got used to having the seat forward now.

yep we had the same prob, I used to put the handle down and just jam the seat right back so the capsule couldnt move.
I have the same prob with the safe n sound carseat.

Thanks for your replies. We have a 4 door toyota altezza station wagon. Just bought it as we had a 3 door car and needed a bigger one for the baby and to fit the mountain buggy. At least the buggy fits!!

Ahhh the dreaded altezza! I have one too :P Not the wagon tho, I have the boy racer version. I have to jam Thomas's one behind the passenger seat. Doesnt really worry me tho, at least he's not going anywhere! The only thing that annoys me is the stupid seatbelts that when you pull them out a little bit you have to let them go all the way back in before pulling them out again!

I think its an issue with a lot of cars.
We have a nissan skyline and with the evenflo capsule it was a mission to sit in the passenger seat. Now we have the safe n sound car seat in the backwards position we have slightly more room, but yeah you do just get used to it in the end and its only for a year and then we can turn the car seat around to forward facing. I just wish our boot was bigger as the skyline boot is really pathetic!!

Huh - our capsule fits without a problem in the middle seat of our Altezza (sedan, not stationwagon though) - we have a European capsule though so it might be a bit more compact than NZ ones?

Depends I guess, mine has to go behind the passenger seat as we dont have a clip in seat, so thats where our problem is.

I was told by plunket car seat person that u should never jam a capsule in cos its designed to move back towards the seat in a crash and to 'encapsulate' baby to protect them. If the capsule cant move in a creash, cos its jammed in,..then baby will move forward, instead on the whole capsule taking the impact.

how many people have the carseat in the middle seat with just the lap belt?
I have also hired one from plunket and have the same prob with the front passenger seat being quite forward (I have a subaru impreza), so was wondering how safe it is in the middle seat instead of at the side? The booklet that I got did say it could go in the middle seat, but just wondered how safe it is?

Middle seat in the back is actually the safest place for it as it is futher away from the doors if there is a side impact. Our middle seat has an over shoulder belt, not a lap belt though. But don't some capsules just use a lap belt anyway?

I asked my m/w about this too and yeah - she agreed the safest place is the backseat - it just doesn't seem really stable enough?
Think I'll just put it behind front passenger seat and get used to sitting forward when I'm not driving!

We have a station wagon and have the same problem - my DH is 6'4" and Im 5'11" and we have issues with the seats having to be so far forward. We dont have any choice as we have the next sized seat up for our toddler which sits in the middle at the back with the two capsules either side. Its a huge squeeze but seems to work. The passenger front seat isnt too much of a problem but the driver is quite cramped.
Our only other option is getting a van!
