To be honest I avoided anything over the counter. So I can't tell you which one it is, sorry!
One thing that I found worked well though, was putting manuka honey (or any honey) in a medicine cup, topping it up with boiling water, mixing it together then taking it like a cough mixture. The bonus is that you can have this version of 'cough medicine' as often as you like, and it really does coat your throat and make a difference. If you don't have time for that, just try a spoonful of honey, or a hot lemon & honey drink with extra honey.
Hopefully that will at least help you in the meantime until you can find out the over-the-counter one. If it doesn't get better, consider going to your dr to get antibiotics. I avoided that as long as I could when I got sick (resulting in a chesty cough) at the end of my 1st trimester, and the result was a cough that lasted me well into my 3rd trimester. So the sooner you can get it sorted, the better - I know how horrible it feels, especially when you wake up coughing in the middle of the night!!!
Hugs, and here's to getting rid of the cough quick

Hmm I thought we weren't allowed any - I was really sick with a cold and cough at about 10 weeks and the doctor, chemist, and midwife all said I couldn't take anything. Maybe that was because I was in the first trimester though?

The one that kiwigal mentioned looks like the one I bought over the counter. I mentioned to the pharmacist that I was pregnant and it's the one that he got.

I was told by both my GP and pharmacist that I you cannot take any of the cough syrups at all when pregnant. All that was recommended to me was the Comvita Fortacold cough mixture. It still does the same trick IMHO.

hate to tell you kiwigal, but pholcodine isn't just for kids. it's the only cough medicine that works for me. i;m surprised you were prescribed it but maybe you were allowed the kids dose of it.... Pholcodine is made from a base of codeine.
Sorry, just had to let you know. lol. i only know coz with my asthma, pholcodine is the only one that helps when i get broncholitis etc

Codeine is ok during pregnancy, just not highly recommended as panadol is a better choice. I accidently took some panadeine (thought they were panadol) and checked with my doc that I hadn't done any harm.
I was also told no to all cough medicines, but was 1st trimester so not sure if that made a difference. Perhaps you could try vicks or something instead.

Sonya, when I broke my rib I still had that horrid cough but the I had codiene and it helped heaps. So maybe that Pholcodine would be good choice. I would check with Dr/MW/pharmasist too just be be 100% positive.

I was told not to take any so i made do with hot lemon and honey drinks (which I got over drinking very quickly!!!). There must be something though so give your mw or dr a call :)

Here's a plunket recipe for natural cough syrup that I'm sure you could take:
2 T freshly squeezed orange or lemon juice
2 T honey
1 T glycerol
1 t olive oil
Mix together and give 1/2 to 1 t, 2-3 times a day. Store in an airtight bottle in the fridge.

I am a pharmacy technician and we always advise against all cough mixtures in pregnancy unless on advice of the midwife,ob etc but in saying that my pregnant friend came and brought some pholcodene the other day off me on recommendation from her ob. I was surprised that he recommended it for her.
